    Neat to see a more minimalist approach! Whether it's got to do with gender or not, I think journalling is feeling 'instagramization' - where sharing something (possibly very personal!) on the internet means people make that much more effort in the presentation.
    Stealing that monthly spread where two days (I'm gonna pick the weekend) are on the second page!

      You might want to check out this IG account: instagram.com/minimalistbujo/
      The approach on this account is well, minimalist and very simple. It's focused on the tasks and getting things done, and not to much on making it look pretty. Don't get me wrong, I love pretty stuff, but when it comes to planning, even though I doodle a bit etc., I keep things more on the simple side. :)

      Hey Jonathan Requillo, the benefit of this system is that it can be as simple as you need it to be. My wife's will be very detailed, mine will be very basic. But the end result is the same: better organized and more productive.

    • @epsilonkleiner0
      @epsilonkleiner0 5 лет назад +1

  • @cassandra007
    @cassandra007 8 лет назад +169

    Grateful to see another man's perspective. I plan to introduce it to my high school students and want to make it relevant to my guys, who will not be impressed with all the colour and stickers! I think my high achieving boys will see the advantages. I am trying to figure out how boys would carry it around. Women often keep them in their purses.

    • @thematthewkent
      @thematthewkent  8 лет назад +21

      I think introducing it to your high school students is a fantastic idea. I think the bullet journal reinforces two critical skills for success: 1) creating something from nothing and 2) taking control of your time. I definitely didn't have that second piece when I was in high school. I carry mine with me everywhere in a messenger bag. Maybe one day I'll do a video about my everyday carry, but I have several items that (almost) always come with me. Let me know how it goes with introducing it to your students!

    • @cassandra007
      @cassandra007 8 лет назад +11

      I introduced it to an honours class in May, when I first discovered it, but they are mostly girls. Several liked it immediately. I am going to use it to organize the daily lesson on the board so they see it in practise as well, including migrating or deleting tasks at the end of a lesson as seems best.
      My grade 12s tend to be boys headed to university or trades. Both could benefit.

    • @thematthewkent

      This is such a great idea to introduce it to your students! As a high school student, I can say, bullet journal can save anyones life when tracking time and upcoming projects and all the school work!
      And stickers and colours are not an extreme need. It is just decorations. :)
      Keep up the good work!

    Thank you for this! A lot of of people are quick to judge and call bullet journaling something that wastes your time rather than what helps you get things done in an efficient way. I personally am someone who takes the time in the weekend to make my BuJo colorful and artsy, just because it makes me feel happy inside. While I sometimes rely on digital reminders, my appreciation for doing things the analog way will never die. Your video is awesome in demonstrating the fact that a bullet journal is what you make of it. Love your style of minimalism and clarity. The 'brain dump' is definitely a spread I'd love to try out in the coming month. Thanks for the inspiration! :)

    I love the simplicity. I am sooooo busy with work, a post graduate diploma and being a mum to two teenagers that I don't have time for the beauty of the bullet journal pages. I was feeling like I should draw them. Seeing yours in great. I've got an A5 Filofax with a day per page diary that I use. I need it to work for me and that is the beauty of the system. I need to make future logs/monthly though because I have been avoiding them. I need to see the month at a glance and even 6 months so those will be added to mine. Thanks for sharing. It's great that you plan to get together with your wife and share all the things you are grateful for - thanks :D

    I'm a little confused as to what goes in the monthly log and the daily log. It seems redundant to me. Can you clarify how they're different?

    • @thematthewkent
      @thematthewkent  8 лет назад

      +Mostly Day Hiking The monthly log is a calendar view that you consult all month. If you have an upcoming task that you aren't necessarily going to work on today, it goes on the monthly task list. You create a new daily log each day with what you are going to do that day. In general all 30 or 31 of your daily logs won't be able to fit on one spread, so it's better to have a daily log than to try to cram everything into the monthly view.
      Hope that helps!

    • @MostlyDayHiking
      @MostlyDayHiking 8 лет назад +1

      Matthew Kent it sort of does. I've been using the monthly log to record appointments and events that I've previously scheduled. I use the daily log almost like a to do list for that day. Am I doing it correctly?

    • @thematthewkent
      @thematthewkent  8 лет назад +1

      +Mostly Day Hiking Sounds about right. I record appointments in the portion of my monthly log that looks like a calendar and keep a large running to do list. One thing that really always bugged me about the over-prettifying of bullet journals is that spreads cease to actually be functional. I saw a "mind map" future log where all of the events were just thrown somewhere on the page and there was a line leading to the month they belonged to. How is that useful for anyone? Also the wasted space. I think the washi dividers on dailies are really cute, but that's wasting like 10 lines on a page that could actually be used. I love the aesthetics, but my approach is more to create and use a functional spread, then decorate the extra space, margins, and embellish the room I left for my titles.

    • @thematthewkent

    Thanks for sharing your process. I have started seeing more and more about bullet journaling and was trying to figure out what it is. I usually keep a notebook handy to capture ideas because I enjoy handwriting notes though I am trying to migrate fully to my iPad Pro with Apple Pencil. While I can understand why some people find bullet journaling attractive, it seems time intensive. I get the impression that the system takes a significant commitment to maintain over just using a planner or in my case, kanban, mind-mapping and note-taking apps. It's great that you're doing what works for you and not letting "the norm" stop you. The fact that women's journals tend to be more decorated is a product of the larger gender conditioning but that's a long story. I for one am not a guy and yet my planner is clean and streamlined. Much plainer than yours in fact. So I don't think genders should be put into boxes and categories, because we are all a mix of either one. Our physical gender does not decide what we are as a whole.

    "For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosever BELIEVETH on him should not perish but hath everlasting life" - Jesus can save you from death and hell if you confess Him as your Lord and believe He died and rose again to bring you to heaven and take away your sin!

    Your habit tracker is great. People make them needlessly complicated yours is simple and gets it done and it still looks visually pleasing on the page! Top notch, dude!

    Well, well, well a man's point of view about Bullet journaling. I enjoyed the video as much as I enjoyed your explanation on your layout. You definitely put a lot of thought into your pages before creating them. What I like most is that you are doing this with you wife. Regardless to whose idea it was doing it together is great. Please continue to do what you are doing along with the positive attitude that you have. You are an inspiration. Thanks you for sharing and I am looking forward to seeing more videos.

      Well, not a "man's" view . . . a "metrosexual's" view. Real men do not "journal". We use the tools available on the myriad devices we already carry to track to do lists, etc. "Bullet Journalling" or any of that other happy-slappy nonsense is just wasting time.
      Just make an ordered list . . . there's no need to spend time drawing cute little pics, etc. That is all just excusing more time wasting.
      In my mind . . . "bullet Journalling" is a great tool for procrastinators. They can fill their available time "journalling" and "organizing" instead of planning and finishing the tasks at hand.

      +Bledsoe Texas Thanks for your input!
      Why don't you try using the bullet journal system with no pictures whatsoever?
      If you don't want to, that's totally fine, it just sounds like bullet journaling isn't for you.
      Thanks again for sharing your thoughts though

    Leuchtturm is german: pronounced; loy-h-t-tour-m -> the "h"-sound like in "humor"

      +Matthew Kent It's German for "lighthouse". Just go to dict.cc (for example) type it in and click on the little sound icon next to the word. Should be the easiest way to get an idea of how it is supposed to sound ;)
      Anyways: thank you for your video! I'll start my own bullet journal within the next few days :)
