I have been driving my 2000 Boxster S for 21 years. 115,000 trouble free miles and I love everything about it. Sounds great, runs perfect. Your comment not much faster and not much more power is very wrong. 217 to 255 is significant. 6.4 zero to 60 vs 5.7 is a huge difference as well. I would never modify that perfect car. Just started watching you guys and really enjoy the video's. Happy New Year.
I agree, the 986 Boxster is absolutely fantastic. I picked my base 5 speed up, in really fantastic cosmetic condition (interior is as good as yours), but with a clutch so bad it couldn't move, for $2500. Put a clutch in myself in my small one car garage, and now I've got a running and driving amazing shape 986 for $3,000 invested.
For me, the sound of the intake in your left ear is what it is all about when giving it the beans! The car is not a Lamborghini, does not to be supercar loud for 0-60 in 5.5 seconds. Perfect the way it is, and I love it!
One easy mod that transformed my 986S was installing the 997 shifter. Made the whole car feel tighter. And you can also desnorkel the intake for a more growling intake sound.
My 2001 Boxster S never fails to put a huge grin on my face, especially due to the sport exhaust on it, making the most glorious, addictive Howl between 4000 and 6000 RPMs and the amazing handling, Phenomenal car... and the best part, as you know? This is the Porsche model that saved Porsche's bacon, so it is the most important piece of course of history, in my humble opinion.
You’re right, Boxsters are such a hidden gem. I was fortunate to buy one in 2011 as my first car and still have it. Have considered selling it because I mostly drive my Volvo mom-car now but this video makes me want to keep it ❤ go Card!
Kept my 2006 boxster S , %100 stock. Since 2019 and loving it! Can't imagine stashing car during winter, or salted roads!?!!and not driving it. Especially when I live in paradise! Aloha from Hawaii! top down and cruising...........
A car that pristine ought to be kept completely stock, especially if you're looking to sell it. Not everyone who's in the market to purchase one of these cars prefers it louder/modified.
I bought a 1999 Boxster last summer in this same color combination. Being a ‘99 it has 201 hp and a 5-speed. Mine had around 70k and the previous owner replaced the clutch and proactively upgraded the IMS and RMS while it was apart. It also has a new top with an upgraded glas rear window and 4 new Pilot Sports on it. The cosmetic condition is about as good as yours. It’s amazing to me that a 1st Gen Miata is still more expensive than one of these… and I love the Miata (have owned two 1.6 examples). I am torn on the exhaust question. Mine is also stock and quite quiet… but as it sits I wouldn’t hesitate to take it on a long trip. A louder exhaust can make that uncomfortable if it isn’t a good one.
As an owner, all I can say is thanks to all these videos saying these are the "best value sports cars around", as demand has gone through the roof and prices are on the up and up. It's an investment now, and they are officially a 'modern classic' haha
My 2000 Boxster S with 62000km runs and sounds great, the NA flat six is awesome, the reason these go for such low prices is many people are afraid of a potential IMS bearing failure. I change my oil every year (full synthetical 0w40 Mobile 1) or 5000km (Toronto Canada) and only drive it in the summer , winter driving with the salt roads is a car destroyer. Maybe try to do the exhaust mod where you drill out a portion of the muffler, it is supposed to sound very good and does not cost much at all. I have considered doing this on mine but have decided to keep it all stock. 250hp and 225lbft is way better than say a Miata.
I sold my 986 S, also black, to a friend. Mine had the gray interior with black tones which I loved. Also had the turbo twists. I sold it with around 28,500 miles. I would have kept it forever but I needed a back seat for my son. Ended up getting a rather well option 996 C4 X51 with full CF interior package, Carrera wing and aero kit. I love it but the Boxster was still a better drivers car, even with just shy of 100 HP less. I detailed my 986 and like yours was like a mirror finish. I have some amazing pictures I took of that car, black suits it SO well!!! Also the Boxster is really about the intake sound, which is right by your left ear. When you get in it, it sounds soooo good. My 996 has the Porsche Sport Exhaust which sounds fantastic as well, but totally different. You really have to drive a Boxster to really understand that intake sound.
@@JRGarage thanks. It's an excellent car and quite underappreciated. Those that know, know. People like to call it all sorts of names, but when they get behind the wheel, and a nice warm sunny day on some back road Twisties, they get it. It's an amazing car and spectacular value
I would leave the stock exhaust on. Sounds fine. Very refined. I love these cars. I'm without a soft top right now and it is about time to change that. This is the top choice right now. Beautiful cars.
986 Boxsters are the biggest and best sports secret of all time. What I mean to say is - Don't buy them, they are terrible. Mine sold new for $50k in 1997 (it's a 1998) which is $94,029.91 in 2023, wrap your head around THAT! It's two seats and two seats only, if you can't handle that you don't want a REAL sports car. Build quality is classic German, frigging perfect. Mine has 118k and runs great. I broke the plastic window of the top lowering it in the depths of winter, manual says don't do that, I did it, so I got a new top with a glass heated window. Performance feels to me to be faster than my 1987 Porsche 911 Carrera I drove for years to work, not as fast as my 1982 930 Turbo but what is? I bought mine in 2019 off of Ebay from Texas for less than $6k. Arctic Silver with Terracotta red interior. Oh yeah. I put four new tires and added a new battery all from Costco in addition to the new top, it came with an aftermarket exhaust. New air filter, new cabin filter, new fuel filter. Changed the oil, cut the oil filter, dropped the pan, no silver, guess the IMS is still a time bomb but I don't care, God forbid it blows but a used engine is less than $3k. Insanity. The ride can be harsh since it is stiff, but no bump steer at all, it's definitely stiffer than a 911 for sure. My passenger side window recently started making crunching noises, guess it's the regulator, I believe I can replace it myself. I replaced the LCD display on the a/c heater assembly which is very common problem, kit from 914 rubber, just follow the directions. The little grills in the roll bar hoops are VERY vulnerable, black plastic that has seen 25 years of sun becomes very brittle, one side is missing pieces. Replacements are over $100 each which is insane, I hope some kid figures how to make them using a 3D printer for next to nothing, will sell hundreds. I don't really feel any difference from almost empty tank of gas to full tank of gas, was VERY obvious with 911's. It is a wonderful car if you can live with just two seats. Oh, there is no glove box, next to no place to put stuff except the very capacious two trucks so I bought a cup holder gadget from Walmart for next to nothing that fits between the passenger seat and the center console, it can hold garage door openers, coins, pens, etc.
So glad I found you guys. I remembered seeing you talk about your "buying 944, etc for the sport seats and re-selling" and I thought "I wish I was friends with these brothers because they are so smart and have found a great niche to make their dreams come true. I have wanted a Porsche for sooo long and you have helped keep that hope/inspiration alive. #porsche4mein2023
I have actually been looking into getting a boxter to learn to drive stick in. Found a couple in my area, a little over 10k but definitely not unattainable especially for a Porsche.
Heavy muffler, replace! De snorkel, install light weight muffler 16lb and cat delete, B&M short shifter, now you have a great sounding lighter Boxster.
Throw on the Circuit Werks catback and midpipe cat deletes pipes on em. Same sound but saves a lot of $$$$$, which is in line for buying one of the cheapest Porsches. Love these so much
Tomorrow I’m doing an 8 hour highway drive in my 987 S. I’ll be doing the return trip two days later. The standard exhaust is fine - any louder is uncomfortable after a while.
I have one in my collection. My exterior is metallic forest green with tan exterior. Also an S with a six speed and only 50K miles. Great Sunday driver
@@octodinosaur2419 nope. It was absolutely perfect. If drone on scale of 1-10 and 10 was blow ear drums this would be (imo) a level 1. The system still has cat and it does have a muffler. But it makes it a deep throaty growl.
I bought a 2000 Boxster S a few years ago. I sold it two years later because it was always in the shop. Since the price has skyrocketed. Now I wish I had kept it.
Whoever needs a loud "look at me" exhaust on a Boxster is completely missing the point of this car. It's about driving it and yes, it has one of the best, sweet boxer induction noise in a Porsche. It's always some guy begging for attention that feels the need to "improve it". 99% of the owners can't drive it to the limit anyway. From somebody who owned everything between a 2.5 986 and a crazy fast 911 Turbo with 15+ years on racetrack days. Leave the poor car alone and sell it to a true driving enthusiast living near some mountain roads/track.
So glad I bought a 1986 944 last June. These things are still depreciating and are a lot more expensive to fix while the 944 is a lot cheaper to fix and is now slowly going up in value

I know you probably don't have this car anymore, but I've got a black Cayman and I tinted the bright red rear tail lights and it looks so much better. I mean night and day
When I purchased my '02 Boxster S in 2011 it made me feel like a kid in a go kart again...years later that feeling has never left me! 😍

I actually like how quiet it is. Don't need people to notice when I drive by.
Same here. You sound like my dad, he always said that

Does it really need more exhaust? “Nothing handles like a Boxster.” I think it’s great stock.
Yeah, I love that tone from 4k to redline. Something about it is just... perfect.
It does need a little sound. I bought a muffler for mine and so much better.

What about doing it in stages like an intake and then an exhaust?
Leave the stock exhaust on the car. Loud exhausts are for posers.
I think add the exhaust, but at the same time with under 45k Miles , better to leave it stock. 🤔
How's maintainance? Like insurance and plates etc etc

You don't put a straight pipe on a 986 Boxster, it's about the induction note. And it's one the best sports cars you can buy.

Low mileage 986 that sat for long periods has bearing and seal problems written all over it. It’s a beautiful car, though.
