The speech at the end by the officer was awesome. There is no joy, just do the job and get on with it. Very professional.
That officer is a true military professional.
It's in their Honor Code.
Art 7. In combat, you act without passion and without hate, you respect defeated enemies, and you never abandon your dead, your wounded, or your arms.
Even though I agree with you, these are 2 things that, lets' say, fight each other. If you do your job with no joy, you are not doing it well enough. If you do it with joy, something is wrong with you, since your job may be killing other people. If you don't enjoy your job, just quit. This is a job that it affects the soldiers' personalities.
This is why, at WW1 or WW2, on prisoners executions, only one riffle had a real bullet. That all soldiers wouldn't feel guilty.
Yeah killing for money veeeery professional !
Exactly, just STFU, do the job, don’t ask questions.
What a remarkable speech at the end. Such admiration and respect for his fellow man even in time of war and death. He’s a great leader for his troops.
Wished that i knew before my Dad passed ... Now I'm learning about Legionnaires
In the armies of old Europe there is, generally speaking, a moral tone that is not seen in other modern armies. Honor, respect for the enemy ... absence of hate in their actions. There is a lot of professionalism and good work in what they do. From Spain: Respect for the foreign legion.
Yup, just dispatch the enemy then head in for a siesta or high tea or cocktails. Civilized warfare.
I think its just that its hard to respect your enemy when they are terrorists. Its different from when one country simply went to war with another. France Vs Germany is different then France Vs Terrorists.

An Outstanding report....everything about it was well done. It brings to light just how fast it all happens and how it ends just as quickly. The Legion is unique for many reasons, but something that stands out is that each Legionnaire takes a very specific and detailed oath when they graduate from their initial training that is a key part of their ethos...to respect their enemy and treat their enemy with dignity. When serving for UN in Mogadishu in 92/ 93 I had compound duty that day. While pumping water from the truck a Legionnaire approached me and asked for where Burger King was located in the US Embassy compound. Then I realized he spoke Norwegian to me and he told me they had walked through Mogadishu to the camp. That made a big impression on me! Legionnaires, though as nails. Stay safe and on point my friends 👍❤
Legionnaires are truly the back bone of the French military. Outstanding job.

I admire the Legionnaires who executed their mission well, seemed to give the Jihadists time to cooperate or face the consequences. The American Marines (SEMPER FI!), Army, Air Force, and Navy - especially the Corpsmen who tend the wounded, have been on thousands of patrols, seen things which should never be seen, and bravely stood the test of combat. But in addressing the troops to keep them all informed at the end, I was especially moved to hear the officer say, "One does not celebrate the death of anyone." And a moment later says, "...Our combat is worth doing if we do it with the values which are ours."
Why have I not heard those sentiments more often from the Americans? I know almost every one of them has duty, honor, and courage, plus the integrity to know these things. But instead of hearing from them, we glorify snipers who kill the most people from nearly impossible ranges. We still seem to care about the body count rather than the most important part of the mission...
The mission isn't to land the most people quickly and take charge... install a "green zone" and hope the indigenous troops won't suddenly open fire on the men training him. The mission isn't about war-fighting and taking over land once occupied by the enemy. Those military objectives are secondary, they help make the real mission possible. The REAL mission at hand is to bring aid, comfort, and relief to hurting people. Why are we fighting, otherwise? We aren't expansionists in real estate the way we used to be. But what is it about Afghanistan and Iraq that rated American invasion and "assistance" when we totally ignored the outright slaughter in Rwanda?
Is it because Iraq sits on a lot of oil? The oil that we want our petrochemical countries to get their hands on while Rwanda didn't offer much in natural resources other than gorillas?
I posit that the reason the US has the largest annual military budget in the world is that we have to constantly defend our monetary Imperialism. The late US Marine Corps General Smedly Butler is revered for his loyalty in accomplishing the mission given to the Marines. But he didn't like it. After retirement, General Butler said he felt like a paid hitman for Wall Street. And you know what? There was a reason he felt that way... that's exactly what this hero and honorable Marine was... a hitman for Wall Street. As long as we have hitmen as talented as the late General, we'll have to defend our selves with higher and higher budgets. A bully has to do that. He's got to get more power so he can continue to push people around.
Maybe if we could listen to the words of the Legionnaires and Only combat is only worth doing if we have the right values. America needs to practice what it preaches. Here's a country all bent out of shape because their country, given to them by G-d, is threatened by poor Hispanics fleeing from the same "Banana Republics" the US set up. We're so afraid of the Muslims, we forget they are worshipping the same G-d as Christians and Jews. Poverty has driven them into al Qaeda and ISIS/ISIL just as it has driven Hispanic refugees northward to their rich Uncle Sam.
The poverty that threatens all is the rampant and uncontrolled capitalism that makes its money by the exploitation of the poor. As long as America strong-arms the rest of the world, we'd better keep building bombs. But remember, this is becoming a guerilla war, not one of land and borders. Remember how well we did against Vietnam, a country so poor people lived on scraps of food unless they were from the privileged Catholic class like Diem. We spent all the money we could and sent 52,000 Americans to die. Do you think it was just to stop Communism? Hell no, the Americans thought there was oil under the Tonkin Gulf. Even now, as people drop dead by the thousands, Trump is working on deals to cut production and raise prices so the multi-trillion-dollar oil industry receives its relief.
If we keep rattling the sword, the guerillas are going to know just where we are.
From Legionnaire's Code of Honour: "Au combat tu agis sans passion et sans haine, tu respectes les ennemis vaincus, tu n'abandonnes jamais ni tes morts, ni tes blessés, ni tes armes."
---> "In combat, you act without passion and without hate, you respect defeated enemies, and you never abandon your dead, your wounded, or your arms."

Now there is an officer I'd gladly serve under!
The officer looked a bit freaked out, definitely.
His NCO though. MAN, that NCO could calm one down even under nuclear bombs raining.
NCOs are everything in the FFL.
To become NCOs you must have been enlisted before. You cannot graduate and go through roght away. It's an exception unique to FFL in the French Army.
It gives experienced and tough as hell NCOs.
Because they are not here to deal with whiners. Enlisted Legionnaires are quite tough to handle as when they start, they are from very different background, cultures, mentalities, and sometimes even from enemies countries. Without strong leadership and discipline (and some slaps in the face) they would all disband quickly in a culsterf#ck.
Officers are usually arriving from Military School and are all French (no Officer cannot be french in the FFL).

Bref rien d’honorable
