What I Learned from John Meadows - Remembering MountainDog

  • John Meadows passed away yesterday, and his death has rocked the entire fitness community. He was much more than a bodybuilder or RUclipsr. He was a mentor, a friend and someone I looked up to outside of the gym life.
While I learned a great deal from him in the gym, the most impactful lessons would come from all of our interactions outside of it. Today, I want to share with you some of those lessons.

I live 40 mins away from John. My wife bought me VIP tickets to the Arnold for my birthday this year, and honestly I was most excited about hopefully meeting John. John's been "with me" over the past 3 years as I've started and continued my recovery from opiate addiction, gotten into fitness, and started bodybuilding from scratch as a 33 year old, started my own family, etc. He'll never know how many lives he impacted like mine, people he never met, yet he was their personal hero. He was mine.

John was actually who introduced me initially to your content, Eugene. I had messaged him and he recommended going to check out your stuff. He seemed like such a genuine, down to earth guy and a great father. In every video I've seen of him if he was collaborating with someone else, he always seemed present in the moment, listening to them. He was the one person in the fitness industry I wanted to meet. This hurt way more than I thought it would.

Nice tribute, Eugene. I’ve watched more than a few of John’s videos and have always enjoyed them and also learned quite a lot, in the process. I remember one, having nothing to do with training at all, I think, where he talked about his nickname, Mountain Dog. John was a lover of that breed, The Bernese Mountain Dog and having had the pleasure of living with one for about ten years or so, I share his enthusiasm for the breed. They’re wonderful, good natured, happy go lucky dogs and very lovable. I think those dogs are a lot like John was, personality wise and may be part of the reason he loved them so much. RIP John and thanks very much for all you taught us.

John was the one who really pushed me to start making regular content on RUclips. He was absolutely relentless with it. Every time we'd catch up we'd film half a dozen videos together to add to his bank of several more already saved ready to post so he never ran out of free information to provide to his audience.

He was truly a master of not only his craft but also just being human. Being someone most couldn't even pretend to be. Humility at the highest level. Really powerful testimony, Eugene. The world is a better place having had John Meadows in it, and I'm glad he can continue to change the world (and his light can still shine) through you.

Thank you for sharing your personal experience with John. It means a lot to those of us that have not had the opportunity to meet him in the flesh. Much love to you.

My beginning about John is similar to yours. I first discovered him also on Tnation with a chest trsining article and from there I learned about the Mountaindog.
As a member of John's site, I learned about you Eugene. And bc of John I now can communicate with you and am a Ganbaru member.
Spider crawls, Bulgarian split squat dropset, slight incline presses, meadows row, rear delt swing dropset, and reverse band bench presses will always be John's notable exercises.
Thank you for sharing your experiences. I never met John but his values align with mine. A rare person to walk this earth.
May he rest and live in eternity with Christ, my grandfather, my brother, and your father.
    Thank you Eugene.
