450 bucks seems a little steep for a glorified fire stick with some custom software on it, but it is pretty cool. Seems kind of crappy that they charge for certain layers when the information they're using is provided free by the services that they're using to pull it from the API
Go build one yourself then.... with those features. For less.
They need to maintain servers or pay for cloud services to supply the data. But if they allowed you to serve your own data from your own server, then it would be so much better.
"...they charge for certain layers..." Takes nerve.
Hey Mike, I love my Geochron Atlas 4k. I have a stack of 3 32" monitors on my desk. What I found was that I didn't like switching one between my computer and my geochron. My solution was to get a 4k capture hdmi card and then I can display the geochron as an app on my PC, I can full-screen it, or window it and I can move other windows on top of it. This makes it infinitely more usable.
That's a great idea!
Hi Mike,
All that information is awesome. Nice demo of the Geochron Atlas 4K. That sun figure eight in the middle of the screen is called the solar analemma. Stay safe. 73 WJ3U
Reading through the comments I was shaking my head a lot. I just set mine up last night on a 55" 4K to go over my monitors (still on my credenza in my office) and I don't have any buyers remorse. I added the HAM layer of course which is the primary reason I got it but as mentioned, there are a lot of extras included and available. I also added the live feed for the ISS. When I thought about my SUBSTANTIAL investments in both astronomy and amateur radio it's not even a blip on the radar in comparison and something that is useful 24/7 unlike other much more expensive tools in both hobbies I rarely use. Heck, I have single TeleVue eyepieces that cost far and away more than these do! The only real concern I have noticed is that the unit does get quite warm. Aside from that, it gets 5 stars from me.
Definitely a cool program! thanks for the demo.
I'm glad you let me see your geochron. I was itching for some chron.
It's the best Chron this side of the Mississippi I'll tell you hwat.
You can follow a specific flight. I love the feature on left showing what bandsxopen/closed and muf greyline, very useful
Not a specific flight that I'm aware of, but certainly an airline. This thing is really awesome though. So many features.
Just amazing 🙂
Love that you measured it in Baofeng units. You should do that for all your product reviews.
The Geochron is OK except: no ability to zoom in, and no ability to supply your own data from your own server. The latter would be useful for offline scenarios.
You must be new to the channel. Many things are measured in Baofengs.
@@hamradiotube They have updated the system with Zoom.
Great review and subject matter! I love tangible data, especially when it aligns and supports my further enjoyment of Amateur Radio. Thanks for all the detail in the functionality of the Geochron Atlas 4k. I will definitely be adding this to my Ham Shack and with all the bells and whistles!😊🏡🌎🪐☀️💯
I had no idea that it could do so much. I simply can't afford that but maybe one day. Cheers for showing what it cand do, its super cool.👍🤓
3:48 "...wherever the heck this is." Comedy gold that is.
This is all software, I'm not sure why they insist on selling their hardware to run this. This could be an app in the apple, google and amazon application store. I could even be a web page...
Ok I'm sold... Thanks Mike!
Awesome!
Thanks for the review. That's a really cool product, but not $500 + a new tv worth of cool. And there are subscriptions? Yeah, I don't have enough disposable income for that.
Would love to have one but, $500 is WAY too much. I would spring for half that but, not $500, especially since you have to pay for layers!
Have one, tried it for a few days and put it back in the drawer, it's been there 6 months, novelty wore off after a few days. A nice to have but it has no other use, you won't work anymore DX, plus your're not going to be spending hours looking at this screen.
Save your money and spend on some antennas..
I would love that thing.
Also laugh how we are using a UV5R as a form of measurement.
It's the only universally acknowledged measurement for Hams. Since we can't agree on Imperial Vs. Metric, I just use a Baofeng.
@@hamradiotube hey fair enough even if people hate them everyone knows what they are and the size. Great video Mike.
Seems like a raspberry pi project... How many times are you going to look at undersea cables
The Geochron Atlas 4k looks Cool AF & I really wanted one Just Not 500$ cool (to me ) ..Until I Found The Inovato quadra (Ham Clock) for 50$ & it seams to do 95%+ But Only Cost 50-60$ & Never Any Fleas I mean Fees ..lol. Love my Ham Clock ! Very Cool Tech IMHO !
Hey Mike, awesome presentation. And for what I’m hearing using a 4K television the colors are just absolutely beautiful. Hope you get to enjoy it for a time. Take care and have a great weekend.

It's good enough to point a camera at it and shoot this video, so yeah, I'd say they're pretty great! Catch you later.
This message was bounced off of a Starlink sat - $409 at GigaParts
If only the would just sell the software. The PC on a stick they use has thermal issues. There is one that is similar that doesn't have the thermal issue and it's only $195 (not to mention I and others already have a ton of PC's laying around that we could use. The $70 a year for the Ham Radio Bundle isn't horrible, but when you lump it on top of $499 and still need to supply your own TV/Monitor, it gets a bit pricy. If they had a "software only" version for like $249 I'd happily get that and the $70/year Ham Radio Bundle and provide my own hardware. If you are a Raspberry Pi junkie, there is some free software that does a similar display, less the "Ham Radio Bundle".
Hey, what is that software? My daughters 11 and 14 are working on their Tech, and General, this would be a great stem project as they are learning Unix/Linux and putting a pi together would be a nice project for them. Thanks KA9YNX
I can't wait to finally get mine.. GeoChron HQ is about 15 miles away from me.
Not sure I see the value for a guy like me. It sure looks cool!
coolness factor 10, but since all this info is freely available on the innerwebs. Not worth the money they want you to give them.
It's like Grid Tracker, but on steroids.
Haven’t seen the G90 in a while. Mind doing a vid with the packtenna mini 9:1? Thanks!
Can you limit the display to north and south America only?
I need to get my mechanical geochron repaired.
Well I'm sure they can do it.
4:10 "...of 1300 flights..." while pointing at thirteen *thousand* one hundred and six.
Great video Mike. May have to get one. BTW my wife asked what unit of measurement a Boefang is🤔? Do you have a conversion chart to metric 🙂? Again great video.

If only it had pop up alerts of who doesn’t use LOtW hahaha
too right and maybe even a last time uploaded to LOTW, i myself had to wait from so called"big gun USA" stations in excess of 6 months for a confirmation, longest to date was from a well known ZL contest station and that was 2 and half years, and i thought i was being slow @ end of every session :) :)
Mine lasted about a year or so, I suffered from thermal issues and failed. I tried to have it repaired buy they instead offered me $150 off coupon on a new one. No Thanks!! Went with the $49 alternative from another company.
I don’t see the affiliate link. A wise man once said, “Never Pay full price!”
Seriously though, what size 4k TV did you get? Are you happy with the size or would you go bigger?
I don't have an affiliate link for this. I got a 42" Amazon Fire 4K TV and I love it. Here's an affiliate link: amzn.to/3nMZVRt It's on sale right now cheaper than the sale when I bought it. Dang it!
Did you say what size monitor you are using? 73, K8JLW
I did not, but it's an Amazon Fire 42" 4K TV.
Features Galore? Any relation to Goldfinger's pilot/femme fatale?
Hmm, good question. I hope so!!
Very narley
So much money and still you have to pay for the interesting bundles.. NO thank you.
Yeah, I'm getting into astrophotography and I'm not happy with the prospect of starlink messing up my images :( 73 de AI5DD
Yeah thats a real bummer.
Is that a metric or imperial baofeng 😝
Baofeng is its own measurement. It is not confined by the lengths set by mere mortals.
Nice! Those apps could add up quickly though. Very cool though. 73 de K2CJB
Sure. But it still can't make a decent cup of coffee.
Coffee is over rated. Now, if it poured me an ice cold glass of delicious and refreshing Coca~Cola Classic we'd be on to something.
Oh Geez, The day "Boefang" became a measurement unit. Astronomers, drop AU's, now we're using Boefangs. The sun is how many "Boefangs" away?
The sun is 1.47242e12 Baofengs away.
@@hamradiotube COOL!
Way over priced considering you still have to pay a yearly subscription fee.
YEAH...who can afford gecron. they look great,,,,but not happening here.
gecron is WAY overpriced. Geochron is priced fairly considering all that goes into one. Not bad for a company of 6 people.
Great video, this would be a great Christmas Gift 🎁 73 KV5P
If you're a good boy Santa may bring you one!
GEOCHRON........GEOCHRON
Geochron! I hope that's been stuck in your head all week.
lol very expensive , for maps and apps you can get for free online , give me hamclock any time .
500 bucks is a ripoff. The programming is decent, and it's behind a $75 single board. But for that money, hamclock it is.
