I have the exact same wooden garage door with the same problem. Thanks to this video I have a way to fix it without replacing the whole door. Thanks for making this !
Thank you soooo very much for your video! I’ve got a garage wooden door that the bottom has rotted out just like yours and had not idea how to fix it. The quarter round idea helps a lot, thank you so much. A greedy carpenter quoted me $500 to fix it! I was so mad. I did wood work in high school and didn’t have a table saw to rout in the line for the panels or make the edging. Thank you for saving me so much!
So glad you made this video. I called around to a few garage door repair people and all they want to so is replace, every single one of them. My garage door is not damaged at all. It's wood and just the bottom panel is bad. And not even the whole panel is bad, just the bottom part like yours. I'm tackling this as a diy project now that I watched your video.
Thank you so much for helping ordinary folks overcome the fear of actually doing it ourselves. Mine is the ditto damage of your garage the same broken gape open and the same length. Inquired about outside help and was told about $450. I myself able to fix a lot of stuff but seeing the panel has a recess that goes into the bottom 2x4 left me scratching my head about how to make a groove all the length of the wood. Your idea to just saw off the excess protruding thin layer that goes into the bottom wood is such a smart idea. and also to note from others that the door may need adjusting because of the possible shortage when sawed that is a piece of cake to adjust from the motor. Your style of narrative is also brilliant and wasted no time for us to understand completely. Some would be wanna gurus to demonstrate so poorly that it was a headache to watch them because they go over the simple task as though all are dummies.
Good morning, thank you for a legitimate inexpensive diy repair. It shows creativity and cleverness. Some of these shows would have tore the garage down for this repair. Thanks for a great video. You take care and stay healthy. Good luck.
I'm glad I found this video. I was going to do Bondo, but I don't think I would have been happy with the result. The 2X4 was all I needed to make the door look new again!
I liked your hack: I have been looking for someone to rout my 2*4 for awhile, but you gave me a nice alternative-when are you coming to Georgia-It's your job
I have a similar issue. Just afraid to unscrew the hardware cause something bad could happen if I don't use proper instruments to hold the cable. You show that just holding the door open with the strap would do. Nice to know.
Ratchet straps, I need those. Thanks! My wood door has panels that the plies are separating. I'm turned off by the reviews on Clopay and Wayne Dalton residential doors at Home Depot and Lowe's so I'll fix my own.
You've given me the inspiration to do it myself! Two questions: 1) Before starting to take off the bottom rail, I measured it and see that it is 1 3/8" x 4 3/4". A 2 x 6 is 1 1/2 x 5 1/2". I can rip the 5 1/2 down to the right size, but should I be concerned about the difference in the width? 2) Considering the bottom rail rotting seems to be a common problem, do you think it makes sense to look for a non-wood product, like a PVC board?
Width shouldnt affect, but make it flush on the outside for the weather strip. A good weather guard paint/sealcoat should protect well but if you got the $ a plastic option could work well too
Hi, I have a four paneled wood garage door and I need to replace the bottom panel. Is there a place online that I can go to buy replacement panels? I've looked and haven't found anything so far. If not I guess I will have to do what you did and make it yourself. Thank you very much.
Hmmm. I think you'll be hard pressed to find anything like that online. I would try to get a composite/plastic material to replace it with or just thin plywood and good paint
Awesome video!! Im going to attempt this on my garage door, will construction adhesive caulk work if dont have nail gun to attach wooden strips? What kind of wooden strips are you using ?
I'm having some issues with the 2nd panel section on my door. Would I follow this same guide to fix the problems? Are the thin ply panels sold individually that you know of?
thank you for the video. I am going to attempt to do this on my 10' long door. bottom is rotten out. Question, when you remove the 2 cables brackets at each end, are they not under tension by the pulley's?
@@appalachiandiy2415 ok thank you. So if I bring the door fully up and I disconnect the cables, then I can use the ratchet strap to hold the door in place at the height I want to work at to replace the bottom.
@@appalachiandiy2415 awesome. Getting to the drum will be challenging cause the garage door rolls up right above it making it difficult to get at. Maybe I will release the tension on the roller spring before I lift the door up. Thanks again.
Hey ! I have the exact time garage door I have been repairing , cables broke etc now lower paneling falling out so must replace those, are the panels lowes , Home Depot items I can get ???
Many of those wanna-be gurus are so stupid they use one hand on the camera phone and only one hand to work. Why can't they have a second guy or use a tripod? One young fella who talks about computers on RUclips is called Lionel he is like you talk without wasting time and did not think everybody was stupid. He is very knowledgeable and showed us perfectly well. ....Bravo to both of you.
I went to put mine down and the bottom board folded under and brought up the next one with it. Now I can't raise it (or shut it fully). I'm trying to force that door up onto the rails so I can take the wires off of the springs and replace it. This is a 15' x 7' (oddball size) very old wooden door that looks pretty close to yours! That bottom board failed finally and now I'm trying to figure out how to get the door up. If you have any suggestions, that would be cool lol. thanks again for the video!
If anyone else runs into my situation, try and use a floor jack to jack the door up a little and then separate the top/bottom pieces, secure it, etc. I have the springs disconnected safely now as well! My last issue is trying to mate the two pieces back together because mine was held with a single bolt on each side and wooden dowels at each intersection....I've got 5 hours until it rains about half an inch so I have to figure this out :) You really got lucky with the nice bracket you have in this set up though! Mine is all weird.
Got my old dowel rod holes all cleaned out and new dowels glued in on one side. Got everything ready and I tried to lower the door onto the bottom board which was sitting on the ground and I got my hand caught in the door LMFAO. Got it out without breaking anything but they are numb and in pain. So, don't do what I did kids 🤣 Not sure what to do with it now. New 15'x7' door is 6-8 weeks away. Garage doors are a pita.
Others have warned about the danger of taking off the bottom "plate" (@0:57). Why is there no tension in the wire attached to it when the door is only half way up?
No tension because my springs are worn out. If you dont bring the door up there is tension on the wires so if you don't take them off while the doors up they will go flying
@@appalachiandiy2415 Thank you for the info. My string is still good, so is the safest way to try to take off the plate is to raise the door to the top so that there will be little tension in the wire?

That 2x will soon be in the same shape. You should have sealed and painted it before installing. The rot wìll start on the top under those strips that you put on to hide the gap. 6:33
Could you have used a ratchet strap on each side of the door, used a level to strap it level, then measure up from floor to the same distance on the inside of the door, mark even points on the bottom panel, then fold the panel inside the garage and use the circular saw to make a straight and level cut to marry the new board to an even, straight(er) surface?
Sorry to be critical, but that's not the best you could do. If you had taken that lower panel off and worked on it on sawhorses, you could have easily cut straight and parallel cuts and removed all the rot. Hiding gaps with quarter round isn't right😮 2:30
