You can learn a lot about it by reading Buddhist suttas where you will find which gods were worshipped at the time by brahmins, what the customs were etc (for example, everyone thought that buddha was an outcaste by having a shaved head, but after buddha's revolution shaved heads became mainstream of hindu spiritual traditions).

He did a quick visit to north east because bhaskar varman was inviting him, and huen tsang also visited the near by kingdoms, samata kingdom i suppose (northern Bangladesh) and etc.
