These are my favorite videos you guys make. I love hunting don't get me wrong, but when you talk about developing the land and building it to make it attractive to deer and more hunt able, something about that just gets me going. Its like your hacking your land and the deers minds. I love it
SUGGESTIONS NEEDED -- PLEASE We own a small (25 acre) horse ranch in Oregon and would like to help develope better feeding and cover for the few deer we're now attracting with use of feeders. I believe the plus points for the property area a year round stream, an apple orchard, clean and undisturbed bedding areas, and about 40 white oaks with fair to good acorn production. Local (within 2 miles) Ag crops consists of grass seed, hay, mint, with a few 60 acre or less fields of various grains. While we do see the occasional cow Elk in spring, it's all Black Tails in this area. Local poachers, along with Cougars & coyotes have been reduced "greatly" to encourage expansion of a deer population as well. Any and all ideas would be appreciated, as I sadly doubt you'll be visiting the west coast anytime soon.
Maybe things are different down in Kentucky but up north cedars are very important to deer and wildlife as thermal cover and overhead canopy to shelter from snow and ice and protect wildlife in the extreme cold like we are facing this winter. Yes the food value is poor but it is better then nothing when there is 3 feet of snow on the ground and the deer can not get to all the food that is buried and frozen.
@@GrowingDeerTV I have watched your show for years and really enjoy it and I know a lot of other northerners do as well. I know that being down south is different than Wisconsin but we watch the show to learn about food plots and habitat improvement and I feel sometimes guys up here are hearing the information you give and cutting down vital habitat. I hope someday you do some habitat work up north for us :).
Blind Luck - Thanks for watching! I've worked in Wisconsin since 1990. I started there when Buffalo County was first getting a name. Native grasses work there as well! It's sometimes odd as the southern states call Missouri a "northern state" and the northern states call us "southern." One advantage of being in the middle is we have a bit of both habitat types! - grant
What is the best way to turn a 15-20 year old cut-over that was never replanted and consists of 90% sweet gums and poplars into quality deer sanctuary? It currently has a completely closed canopy and no growth on the forest floor.
Wyn - I'd likely treat the sweetgums amd poplars with an Imazapyr-based herbicide. It does a great job of terminating sweetgums but doesn't' harm many native forage and cover species. That treatment is a tremendous tool to convert such areas to high quality feeding and bedding areas. For more information, reach out to the folks at Flatwood Natives. - grant
Travis - Northern white cedar is much better quality browse than red cedar. It's becoming rare as there's not much regeneration in most areas because of excessive deer browse. - grant
I believe February 5th will be a Tuesday. I'll be speaking Tuesday and Wednesday at 12:30. I look forward to visiting with you at the Great American Outdoor Show! - grant
Great video and that property seems like it will be prime hunting during the entire deer season! Hope y’all are staying warm haha today is the last day of Maryland’s deer season but I’ll be honest with you with wind chills in the single digits I’m sitting inside by the fireplace 😂 now I’m looking forward to turkey season and shed hunting...hopefully I will see you at the outdoor show in PA it would be awesome to meet y’all!

It sounds like you have a neat property! I always consider food (year round), cover, and water. - grant
Do you have a video of this property with the updated results?
We haven't returned to this property yet. It was a cool project!
I hope to have you guys back someday soon. Still working hard on the habitat improvements.
Oh man can’t wait for a response back. I learn so much from your videos

We live in Missouri and this property was in Arkansas so snow cover isn't an issue. I do manage for thermal cover in northern habitat. - grant

Thai Alt April 18th
Aaron - I'll be speaking at the Great American Outdoors Show February 5th and 6th. I hope our paths cross there! - grant
Aaron 1113 thanks
Did you ever think about talking at the ignite Men's Conference in Lynchburg Virginia
You should go to the Iowa Deer Classic....
Excellent video! Was wondering where you get your aerial photo maps with property boundaries?
David - Most counties have a GIS system with all properties in the county outlined. - grant
do you guys use the summit climbing stands? I’m thinking about getting one
Josh - We do when hunting in areas with trees appropriate for climbing stands. - grant
GrowingDeer.tv thank you! I hunt at my grandpas alot and i cant leave stands there
How many does have you shot this year at the proving grounds?
Ivan - We tagged 35 or so during the archery and firearms season. We now need to collect some CWD samples so we'll be removing a few more. - grant
Grant I’m goin to pa show second weekend. Is it as good as first weekend do you know if it still full of vendors etc
The vendors will be there. Almost all of them stay for the duration of the show. grant
Do you recommend removing white cedars in northern habitats? The deer up here use them to yard in winter.
No - White cedars are much better quality browse then eastern red cedars. - grant
Good video, but Nate get ready for an explosion of ticks on your property.
Why so you think that? Reducing cedars and using prescribed fire will reduce ticks. - grant
@@GrowingDeerTV Simple. more deer, more deer ticks. Why do you say cedar trees are a problem?
are y'all going to the National Turkey Federation this year right at $600
I shot my first deer this year
Congratulations! - grant
Good job
