14:04 Madox I would disagree with you on this one. Gene's composition is out of this world, such usage of the chords, such structure, such melodies, such lyrics, it is clearly visible that this wildcard is a musical masterpiece and certainly Gene deliberately didn't go for that Pop/EDM vibe because a change from this is currently what we need right now, and Gene did it perfectly. Also, wildcard is not a battle round where you have to drop hard EDM style beats, it's a showcase, and this type of genre which Gene uses certainly needs more recognition in the beatbox scene so that people don't just look for Pop and EDM themes in the routines. Great video nonetheless, cheers!
Have to say, I kind of disagree with your take here. I think experimental is exactly what we need at GBB. You need to stand out from the crowd, and just doing pop songs and concert style stuff isn't enough at all, not only that, but Gene's composition wasn't overly experimental that it lost its musicality. It wasn't too complex or anything. It wasn't my absolute favourite wildcard either, but I think 3rd place is well deserved.
Max was pretty experimental. No one does those kinds of combos with that kinda structure except trung.
@@davifmcmonies2306 Yea he was, and it was pretty dope. Being experimental to me is just a way of saying you sound different because you try new things. I don't get how that can ever be a bad thing.

When Gene says that he’s “At the finish line” he’s referring to his series “Daily Beats”. Metamorphisis, the name of his wildcard, is his Daily Beats number 100. In the description he mentions how he had a really tough time doing the videos because at times he lacked a ton of motivation.
the 100 was because gene was doing daily beats for 1pp days and the wildcard happened to be the 100th so thats what the congrats was for lmao

The harmony is actually pretty simples, we can think in only three simple chords, but I notice something very smart on it. The wildcard start in D minor with some kinda sad lyrics and at some point (5:15) Gene just modulate to F major, wich is the relative major of D minor. Is like a metamorphosis on the harmony, very nice detail.

We beatboxers found 3th and 5th harmony by voice or lips now, but I sure that Gene doesn’t use these sounds literally means in many cases. He should use these sound as 7, maj7, minor7. In addition, few beatboxers use INWARD 3th and 5th lip bass. Gene use this skill from a few years ago, and I love this skill from that time. This skill is famous with beatboxers that love musicality."

Second, I will not read the hole thing because I just spotted something in the second chord. The second note is a C# so put a Daug does not really make sense. Also, we can only be sure if we ask Gene but the first verse can be harmonized only with the i and VII° (or i and V). The only time he leaves the Dm/F is with the bVI in the melody. We can harmonize the most crazy ways, but I don't think Gene though like this, I will ask him at GBB.
@@edu2485 dont think u need to ask he pinned the comment himself. Also gene doesnt need to actively write something complex sometimes u just make it by heart and it ends up being pretty complex

And don't get me wrong, I love this wildcard, is my favorite ever, I just wrote this because in the video Madox said that the chords are complex when they are not.

I disagree that it's too experimental or not really a song or repetitive enough to stay in your head. It is firmly implanted in my brain. I think projecting what an audience wants to hear in terms of artistic composition, and suggesting that songs in GBB should sound very similar to those before it, risks confining the growth and freedom of the artform as a whole. And that it deprives an audience of the opportunity to enjoy different styles of music. I also think that saying that it is not a song is ultimately changing the definition of a song and limiting the definition to particular types of songs.
I also think veering towards wanting a formulaic approach to the types of pieces submitted would be a loss. There is also so much magic that happens in the new or unexpected that would be lost. This is not too experimental at all I don't think.

I feel like the scene got super stagnant in around 2018-2019 until these new school guys started showing up with new flows, news sounds, etc. Don't get me wrong the events were sick, but it felt like I was just hearing the same beats from different people. Then comes quarantine and everyone basically had 8 months to train their routines in closed doors. I'm loving the scene rn.

The easiest way to interpret this lyrics is to look at the title. It's called Metamorphosis. So,it's probably the transformation, the journey to the finish line and what makes us who we are now. That's the best I could explained my interpretation even though I have more to say but I don't really know how to put it in words.
Side note: Btw,I just can't help but keeps remembering 177013 when I see the title of Gene wildcard. You are a man of culture if you know that numbers. It's a different kind of 'man if culture' from what Madox said.

I understand the take where it’s too experimental. It is a melody that isn’t stuck in my head because of how complex it is. However, that doesn’t take away the fact that I acknowledge its beauty and still listen everyday. I love that it’s such a complex melody that I forget it’s exact composition because it allows me to listen and be surprised each time. Just my personal opinion.
Edit: I also would like to say I took a very advanced music theory class in college. I understand melodies very well and what notes are minimally required in order to make a functioning melody that is on pitch and enjoyable. That goes to show how dang advanced Gene’s melody is!!!

Madox I think that Gene's wildcard reflects his own feelings before and after the pandemic where he was on a journey to search his own self. Additionally, I also he meant the line, "here we are at the finish line" sheds light on how the pandemic was fading away in the US.

Yeah, I think I have to disagree on this. I’ve shown all of the top 7 wildcards to multiple non-beatboxers, and unanimously Gene’s has been their favorite to the point where they showed Gene’s to other people. It is experimental and complex, but at the same time it has a way of not letting you get away from it. Just my thoughts haha
As the time goes by, for myself I prefer Stitch’s composition. I just wish it could have also had Gene’s execution.
Gene’s musicianship has no equal that I know of in the beatboxing community.
