    • @hunterwillis3775
      @hunterwillis3775 2 года назад +2

      I think it's because they are seen as more "predatory" in their pursuit of young men, like a wild animal stalking it's prey.

      laoaganlester1728,
      I was told, by a cougar, that the reason they're called "Cougars" is because, like the animal, they are beautiful, graceful and elegant. And, unless you walk into their den (or club) you probably won't see them; but they will see you. She said that like cougars, they "pounce" on their prey.
      This may have been just her version of the story and not the true reason. But it sounds good enough to me. Either way, I'm too old to be of any interest to a cougar, so my research is strictly for story writing.

    The COUGAR is not correctly called a PANTHER and MOUNTAIN LION is rather a misnomer. Cougars are the largest felids, cat family members, that do NOT even belong to the genus Panthera unlike true lions, tigers, jaguars and true panthers (leopards, especially black ones). Like other non-Pathera felids, they do not roar. Cougars dwell in most places in the New World from Canada to southern South America. They do sometimes dwell in mountains but live in almost all kinds of other New World terrain that is suitable habitat. They have no mane so the name LION is rather interesting as applied to COUGARS. The COUGAR is the one animal species that has more names in the English language than any other single species. In British vernacular, PUMA is common. COUGAR is the most proper term in American vernacular. After all, Mercury never made a car called a PUMA or a MOUNTAIN LION.

      I love my Puma shoes and like it or not "mountain lion" is indeed an allowable name for the puma. So is catamount, although I have yet to hear someone use it.

    • @indyreno2933
      @indyreno2933 2 года назад

      @Plumcrazy Preston and @terri mareth, there is no such thing as a mountain lion, the correct common english name for this animal is "puma", it is actually more closely related to the cheetahs (genus Acinonyx) than to the Lion (Panthera leo), surprisingly, the closest living relative of the puma is the smallest living big cat, which is the Jaguarundi (Herpailurus yagouaroundi), interestingly, all extant cat species and genera are in the subfamily Felinae, which is the only surviving subfamily of the family Felidae (Cats), Felinae is divided into two tribes, Pantherini - the big cats and Felini - the small cats, Pantherini is divided into two subtribes, Acinonychina - the lesser big cats (includes Acinonyx (contains 2 species: Acinonyx venaticus and Acinonyx jubatus), Puma (contains 1 species: Puma concolor), and Herpailurus (contains 1 species: Herpailurus yagouaroundi)) and Pantherina - the greater big cats (includes Panthera (contains 2 species: Panthera pardus and Panthera leo), Uncia (contains 2 species: Uncia uncia and Uncia tigris), Jaguarius (contains 1 species: Jaguarius onca), and Neofelis (contains 2 species: Neofelis nebulosa and Neofelis diardi)).
