Low temperature and long times are the key.
Higher heat causes the water inside to rapidly escape the cell walls causing the damage you witnessed. Effectively, the flowers are being 'cooked' and not being de-hydrated.
Try the lowest temperature and 24 hours and I can guarantee the results will be to your expectations.

Was just about to say this. I use a dehydrator for flowers and it works for me but I use lowest temp and do it for two whole days

I also came to suggest this. Dehydrating takes forever. I was also thinking to suggest maybe hanging the flowers upside down from the bottom of the racks to help keep the shape?

Reverend Rodinal - You'll still get shrinkage and discoloring, etc. Plus, they use up electricity where the silica gel uses none.

Basically, the food dehydrator is cooking the flowers. My husband (a science teacher) said that you can actually buy a desiccating machine that will do the same thing the silica gel does, but faster. It removes the moisture from the flowers and you can set the time and temperature just like the dehydrator, but it won't cook the flowers.

I was raising my voice all through this video. Did you hear me from Texas? ~__^ Dehydrating takes a LONG time. I have an air fryer with a dehydrate setting and I kept yelling 8 hours! Minimum 8 hours for many of those flowers! You're taking them out too soon! Ya big silly.
Yes, there will be some wilting, but they will look better if you give them time to dehydrate. The temperature you used was probably okay. 100 to 110 sounds like a good rule of thumb. Big, dense flowers will take 8-10 hours. Even denser like flower buds will take approximately 12 hours. Yes, you read that right. Flower petals take 3-4 hours in general. Store them once done in an airtight container, like a freezer bag. Dehydrated flowers are more often used for their scent, but they can come out very pretty when fully dehydrated and can be used for art projects. I suggest trying again to see if you like them.

When we dry stuff in a dehydrator, its usually an overnight job, at least 12 hours, sometimes 24 hours, and definitely not that high heat, just slow and low heat.

For the roses i would try and hang it from the rack with a wire(so it’s upside down, like your you just dry flowers at home) and then give them 10-12 hours like many others said

That is the reason I didn't use a dehydrator for flowers. I researched all over the internet about using one and didn't want my flowers to shrink and discolor like so many others complained about. And it's because of YOU that I learned about the silica gel. Last year I bought a big bag of it and it wasn't until the other day when I tried it out. Perfection! I did some flowers in it for about 5 days and today I pulled them out. So pleased that I put some more in. Thank you!

When I think of the Renaissance, I think of either gleaming gold or dark, stoic colors with flashes of brighter (but still subdued) colors...and I also think of dried roses!! (Don't ask me why THAT is, but it's true!)

I do really like my microfleur that I bought - totally because of this channel! I bought the large one and recently bought two additional packs of the stuff you put between the plates - and LOVE that because now I can get a little production line going where one comes out and I open it to air out for a bit while I do the next one - and rotate them - because standing there just watching the microwave, then waiting for a few minutes to air it out - then again with the same one - felt unproductive and made me antsy AF - now it’s painless - about three to four rounds per group - I use 1 minute bursts on high - leaves however (I know - weird - but I wanted some leaves...) just ONE burst of 45 seconds made them perfection - albeit delicate perfection. I use the silica too - but I get it everywhere and definitely like my press most because I can use those flowers in thinner molds...

Could you please help. I’ve made some coasters for the first time and used powdered metallic colourings. Some areas haven’t seemed to cured properly and have gone a bit squishy... any ideas what I’ve done wrong please? X

The silica gel absorbs the moisture so maybe the food dehydrater needs some silica gel in it. Maybe a little tray underneath or something to pull the moisture out. I feel like there may be times and situations where the dehydrater could compliment your existing methods.

I think you have to put the dehydrator on a really low temperature for a really long time. Hours and hours.

Shriveled flowers could be an excellent idea for Halloween time or just for people who enjoy that aesthetic. There's a market there!

What about putting them in silica gel and put them in the dehydrator?

you should try the NESCO FD-75A, Snackmaster Pro Food Dehydrator I looked it up and that one was the suggested one.

I LOVE ORCHIDS!!!!! That piece came out amazing! I've been wanting to try putting orchids in the silica gel like you suggested to me before. Is that how you dried them? If so for how long? Sorry I don't have Instagram.

I think it tells you on the little sheet inside the Activa bag how long (generally) for many flowers...

So I use it for food and it makes the food flatter and smaller but just to do beef jerky you literally leave it for 12 hours. So you need a lot time and it would be great for like doing pressed flowers.

I use dehydrator on food a lot. They use heat & the food shrivals every time. Just save it for drying fruits & vegys or at least fruits to make snacks. They are really good because once moisture is out the natural sugars are concentrated. Basically you are cooking your flowers similar to leaving them in the sun with no water, which is another way to dehydrate foods. I've done a few dry flowers & watched you a bunch. The silica obviously holds the petals in place as it draws out the moisture. I am curious, since sugars intensify in fruits from a dehydrator, did the fragrance intensify compared to the silica? Also what if you put the flower in silica to support the petals, then the dehydrator to speed the drying process?

I bet freeze drying would have better results. Maybe try that next? It would likely take longer, but I would think the flowers would keep their shape better since you’d be freezing them so they couldn’t wilt while they dehydrate and you wouldn’t have heavy silica gel weighing the petals down.
Love the reveal at the end! Can you tell us how you made that piece? It looks like the flowers are being hugged by the resin behind it. How did you get that effect without getting any of the background in front of the flowers? So pretty. 😍

I would love to know that too - I tried this earlier this week (darker background with flowers in front - and it seeped in front of the flowers - this effect is gorgeous and would love to see it done since clearly I don’t know how to do it right!

I wonder if one difference is that the silica beads support the flowers as they’re drying. The beads are under and fully around each part of the flower. But, the flowers are completely unsupported in the dehydrator so as the moisture leaves the cells of the flower there’s nothing to support the structure as it dries.
My question is how do you get the silica beads to reset? I’ve tried the oven and my glass kiln (I can program it to go for hours safely and then turn off). Only the top layer of beads partially reset to the blue color. When I tired stirring around to expose more beads the ones that had turned blue went back to pink. Hints, suggestions??. Temperature settings of oven???
Also agree with everyone that much more time is needed in the dehydrator. We leave our dehydrator on for 6-7 hours for fruit.
