    Thanks for this. I stayed to the bitter end as I’ve been on the fence after seeing a lot of folks with the smoking hopper & back burn issue. After reading your comments about the easy fix, I’m ready to take the plunge. It’ll be a nice addition to our RV. I’m thinking I’ll try adding some rubber bumpers under the left legs to jack that side up.

    Hi Dan!
    First of all, thanks for doing this video. Very informative. It was the first video I saw when bought and install my smoker, same model. I am from Costa Rica, so this kind of pellet grill is not common.
    I had the same issue with the hopper! Lots of smoke!, but being new at this I thought it was normal, until, long story short, I spent almost 2.5 hours trying to get 350 F.
    Next morning, I opened the side control panel and found it all cover with a sticky smoke residual, all over cables, connectors, fans, etc. I set the grill to run and saw the fire pit fan extracting air instead of blowing!!!! I unscrewed the fan (it was a little damage due to the heat and smoke last night), turned it over and boom, it worked perfectly fine. I got few smoke and get temperature set reached within few minutes.
    Hope this comment help those who has the same issue, I don’t want them to deal with the disappointment and frustration that I have to… hahaha… finally I could get my smoked chicken ready!

    I should've watched this video before buying mine! It's been four months and I'm finally giving in. I got my grill refunded. I tried every remedy possible but nothing helped. It seems to be a design flaw. I'm gonna go with the GMG Trek Prime. It's a little bit bigger and more expensive but it still should fit on my balcony with no issues.

    Would it have been easier to unplug it, empty the hopper to see what is going on with it? Is it a table top version, or did you just decide not to put them on? I am sure you will get it right, God Bless You, looking forward to your next one. By the way,...I did make it to the end of the video. Glad you found out the probable reason for what happened

      I really like the tabletop pellet grill a lot. Pork butt is my favorite in it because with how small it is, it is extremely efficient on pellets on small cooks. My larger pellet grill will use twice the pellets in the same amount of time so I try to only use it if I can fill it full. Thank you very much for watching and commenting.

    • @Dansoutdoorcooking
      @Dansoutdoorcooking  2 года назад +2

      I went on a Pit Boss forum to ask for answers. The advice I got was to make sure that the pellets are packed very tight and to raise the hopper side about an 1/8 of an inch. I really can't explain it but I have not had an issue since doing this, but I also have not gone from a very high heat straight to a low heat since this initial problem. I hope that this helps you a bit and thank you very much for watching my video.

    Thanks Dan, I just got the exact same smoker for Father’s Day and I was searching to find some information on startup. Sometimes when things go wrong it help’s and this video was a big help. Now I know to tilt my smoker a bit up on the pellet box side and to make sure to prime good first. I’ll watch the burn pot closely also. I’m thinking I may run the temperature a little bit lower like around 400 for a first burn. Again thanks.

    I had this same model and had the same issue with backburn. Returned it Lowe's. Had a similar issue with the Traeger ranger. In my opinion the distance from the hopper through the auger and to the burn pot is just too short on all these tabletop models. I now have the GMG Trek which is portable but not tabletop. Have had no burn back issues.

      I know that this was a long video, but at the end I shared some of the recommendations that I received from others in a pitboss group. The basic fix is that I decreased my temperature setting to rapidly, I need to make sure that the pellets are packed tight, and I should press the prime button if I see smoke coming from the hopper to get rid of any pellets that might be burning in the hopper. Since shooting this video I've not had any problems with the hopper smoking. Thank you very much for watching and commenting, I hope that this helps you.

    Does your fan run at a constant speed or does it ramp up and down on the 225 setting?

    • @Dansoutdoorcooking
      @Dansoutdoorcooking  2 года назад +1

      The fan is constant, it's the auger speed that fluctuates to hold the temperature. Thank you very much for watching and commenting.

      Thanks, I contacted pitboss and they told me it was a 2 speed fan as mine fluctuates on any setting other than smoke, or 350. I just got it so I'm sure there's something wrong, thanks again

      @@rossperrin2980 my fan does that at any temp but haven't tried the smore or high setting. When it is warming up it sounds normal. Then when it is maintaining temp it "surges" RRRRRrrrrrrrRRRRRRrrrrrrRRRRR. Contacted Pit boss, they wanted a video and told me it sounds normal. I got it at Christmas and don't remember doing that new. I have used it probably 10 times and have noticed it the last 3 times. I feel like Pit Boss just brushed me off.

      I've used mine about 20 times and the fan still runs at a constant speed. The only problem I have had was burn back into the hopper.

    Thank you for doing a review on this. I live in a complex that won’t allow large grills, so I got this small table top one for Christmas. I, also, ended up with a lot of smoke from the hopper my first day using it. No other channel has talked about any kind of remedies to fix that problem, but I’m glad you commented above that they worked for you. Thanks for what you do and keep up the great work!

      Thank you very much for watching, I'm glad you found my video helpful. When I started my channel I knew I wanted to stay honest about everything. I'll let you know if what I cooked would be better if I'd done something differently and I will let you know if I have any problems with the equipment I use. That might be why manufacturers don't reach out to me to do reviews. I hope that you have a wonderful week.
