Been doing this for years and had a nail pull out the other day and caught in the jaws when it fired causing the trap to stay open at a 45° angle. No more nail bedding for me. Had the nails placed the same position and angle as yours. It costed me a catch. Lesson learned.
Thank you for your service. I have a buddy that kept getting dug up by skunk. Tried everything to keep them from messing with us. Eventually, we just said "Let's go with the driest dirt we can find and lose the peat". Viola!. Lol. Skunks left us alone. Apparently, peat moss is attractive to skunks like polyfill is to mice. Watch a lot of Locklear's videos and sure enough he preached peat moss, peat moss, peat moss instead of pan covers and underalls/polyfill under the pan. He said to eliminate the peat if skunks keep messing with ya and digging up your trap. Sure enough, it worked. Power bedding is a great way of bedding your traps solid. Especially when the ground is frozen solid and you have to chisel out a trap bed. Great video.
Great video. Not sure where y'all are trapping, but down here in Georgia I'm running trap lines right now. Caught one coyote in 10 days but have had some issues getting dug up. Thinking skunks because I am using peat moss at all my sets. Thanks for the great advice. Good video, too!
Love the video and have subscribed. I'm new to trapping so my question may seem stupid to others but exactly where do you put the nails that go on the sides? Are you putting them through the slot in the levers? I really couldn't see well enough in the video to know where to put them.
Dustin, thanks for your tips, I enjoy them. this might seem like a crazy question but here goes, where do you get dried peat moss, all I have got has been very moist, I did dry it out by putting it on an old screen door up on blocks in my barn using a fan. Do you buy it dry or do you dry it your self? and if you buy it dry , where? Thanks
Mark Hall I the Peat moss comes that way. At times. It drys quickly as long as you are not dealing with frozen temps you should be find using it damp. Dry it out ahead of time if you are dealing with frozen temps
Good idea. I don't trap in open fields, only woods, but mostly rocky. So a golf tee is about the longest thing I'd ever be able to push down into the ground.
Great Video! The book you mention is "Power Bedding" by Jim Cundiff. It's a hard book to find but I believe it's still available from Grandpa's Trading Post.
did you used to be the state trapper in SD? I ask because I think watching you trap in SD will benefit me more than watching some one trapping in other states

Glad it helped
After watching a 3rd time I understand where the nails go.
Thanks for your service and thanks for the video.
Glad to help
Great info
Thanks
I couldn't quite tell where your nails were going in at the levers...could you clarify that for me please?
Down at a angle on the base of the trap
Have you tried that in frozen ground…might take some long screws.
In Sd all we have is frozen ground. I struggled getting traps to stop rocking in frozen ground. That is why I came up with this
thanks for the video. just picked up my peat moss and you showed me how to use it pefectly.
Nicole Snyder good luck kill a buncj

Hey i am really confused and i was wondering if i can use rebar stakes for cyote traping?
Andrew Wolfle the Catfish Master you can but look up cross staking
are the nails galvanized.??
TITE CHAIN TRAPPERS no just plain old nails. It would not matter if they were

Trehan Creek Outdoors though the slots in the levers!
Thank you, Sir. I appreciate your taking the time to help me.

where did you buy your peat moss? the reason I'm asking is because I bought some from Walmart a while back and it absorbed the water. Why is that?
Aron Sutherland I get mine at the tractor supply.
It will absorb water but not as bad as dirt
Looks like the nail heads would interfere with the trap.
They don’t because they are driven away from the trap at an angle. Play with it you will see what I am talking about
Where's the video of you catching your hand? I'm sure after watching you rub the pan that's probably happened at some point, lol
Actually it hasn’t with coyote traps. To much pan tension on them. Mink and coon traps are another story!
I appreciate then comments!
golf tees instead of nails, biodegradable and won't flatten tractor tires
Good idea. I don't trap in open fields, only woods, but mostly rocky. So a golf tee is about the longest thing I'd ever be able to push down into the ground.
Won’t work in our frozen Sd soil

I will see if I can find ir
A few more nails and an elephant could step on it and it won't go off. :))
lol, put your finger in there and find out
🤣🤣🤣 Great Video Brother!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Are you using 20D nails?
they are 4.5 inches long.... dont know what penny they are?
Soulhunter im MB 650 cast trap
