- London Heathrow Airport's innovative new Ultra POD transport system connects Terminal 5 with the airport's extensive Business Car Park areas. The British-developed system is one of the first examples of new personal rapid transit technology that could benefit many parts of the world in the future.
Each pod is designed to carry up to four people and their luggage (including pushchairs and bulky items) in temperature-controlled comfort. The pods do not require a ticket and are free to use. They operate on an 'on demand' basis, so there is no waiting around for timetabled services, and no stops along the way. Just jump in and go!
The futuristically-styled pods are driverless and self-steering, and run automatically along designated tracks (called 'glideways'). They are electrically powered and travel on rubber wheels, giving a smooth quiet ride. A central computer monitors demand and ensures that pods are available at the right places at the right time. The Heathrow glideways are approximately 2.4 miles (3.8 km) long, and the journey time from Terminal 5 to the Business Car Park areas is about five minutes.
This POD transport system is an example of 'green transport' in action - it is energy efficient and low emission, and replaces an estimated 50,000 bus journeys per year. In addition is has considerably shortened journey times between Terminal 5 and Heathrow's Business Car Parks.

We've arrived in the future! This is really cool, I've seen these cars zipping around while watching the planes landing, but never ridden on one. I think this has to be the future for urban transport - quiet, efficient and comfortable - it's positively utopian!
What’s futuristic about this?
Freddie2004.13 Self driving vehicles
@@wisehat_yt No driviers No rails.
The thing is, the concept is amazingly low tech. The vehicles are guided by the curbs on either side of the guideways and the batteries are just twelve volt lead acid batteries similar to car batteries except rated for deep discharge cycles. The guideways were supposed to be simpler and less costly than sidewalks with elevated sections simply being supported corrugated steel plates for the wheel tracks but as you can see, they were pressured to make the guideways much more substantial and protected from pedestrians by chain Link fencing even on elevated sections basically increasing what could've been less than two million US a mile to probably something around the cost of roads for automobiles between 10 million and twenty million a mile.
Ultimately, the problem is that it's more profitable to build private automobiles which are directly financed by consumers, purchased repeatedly as fashion changes, using roads built by public funds, and where let ability is deferred directly to the consumer then to build something that are efficient and practical such as these PRT's.
If you would rather see sensible transportation like these PRT's then you need to write constantly to your political representatives and to your public transit organizations as there's no profit motivation for these projects at least not when compared to alternatives.
I was waiting for the Jurassic Park music to start playing... 😆
Daistar Gaming. Same
u dont even need to visit theme parks anymore just go to a airport lmao
missljean exactly what I was thinking
West Virginia University and Copenhagen also have driverless cars like these, but Copenhagen has a full metro system with these.
lazy! lame
You are going ti the fricking future, please press start
lol!
Film Now Edit Later lol
There is one in the United States. It is called the PRT in Morgantown West Virginia it stands for the personal rapid transit system it goes through the whole university
Heathrow is the Best Airport i've ever seen. The services they provide are great.
Hey, Look... ANOTHER COOL THING AMERICA DOESN'T HAVE.
guitartec SHUT TH HELL UP YOU GUYS DONT HAVE 150 MPH ACELAS DO YOU?
hej guitartec, a co to Ameryka to pępek świata?
TimePro No. We have the 157 mph Hitachi Javelin and the 200 mph Eurostar e320!!
TimePro nah, we have 188mph Eurostars.
Also our trains cover less distance because the UK is smaller.
Well americas escalators are better you guys have a escalator for an TROLLEY
Hello, thank you kindly for sharing this great engineering FRIENDS!!!! I never knew these POD CARS existed?? Were they around in 2004?? I have never seen or heard of them before. Absolutely marvellous AUTOMATED TECHNOLOGY that gives me hope. I appreciate you connecting!!! I have learned something new!!!!!!!
I'm confused as to how this could be more green than an electric bus. One person sits in a heavy metal box that requires electricity- which is most likely coming from fossil fuels- to move just them, versus a bus that could carry dozens of people for proportionately less energy. Am I missing something?
A C They might be battery operated, but I’m sure they are charged by solar or something like that while outside the airport.
Plus they’re on-demand. The electric bus will drive on schedule, with or without passengers. Losing energy when nobody is using it while the pods remain put
They are battery operated and very light. They do not have a third rail for power nor a guide rail. They position themselves between the borders of the track. They are mostly autonomous, not centrally controlled. I think their concept was cheap to build and operate, not "green"
well seems there is progress for that problem...

of course, it's raining
José Mourinho what do you expect. It was filmed in November
I might go to Heathrow just to ride this lmao
See this shit kids? This shit is the future.
and it's from 5 years ago!
Actually THE PAST
Fiona Cohen
What are you all talking about? It is October, 2009 now. Haha, you got me, clever ironic answers.
Hey, everything will be OK. What´s next, you gonna tell me that Donald Trump wants to be President?!
if only we had known
I have been on one of these from the terminal to the car park and back. They drive straight down the middle of the road on a one way system and never orertake as there is no room. They go amazingly fast.
Heathrow simply the best of the world.
Thank you for choosing Johnny Cab!

Dear small-minded American Conservatives: This is what the future looks like. Modern clean transport. Pod cars and express trains which go over 100 mph on quiet electrified rails. Our train technology is 40 years old and falling apart because your toxic rhetoric that infrastructure spending is "socialism" -- sorry byt taxes pay for civilization and I'm tired of living in the past.
lohphat the 1% of the US don’t want an improved infrastructure. They would much rather keep their heel on the peasants and poor while they get everything good. Bastards
Insanely cool and well done. Technology at it's best.
makes you wonder how many people have hooked up in those
Don’t worry......they clean the seats once a week! 💦
me and my five friends went on holiday and we took one of those to get to terminal five. it was so cool and fun. we got a lot of chatting time and the veiw was awsome
Wow that heathrow pod cars are amazing
This is like riding a roller coaster!!
I would go to Heathrow just to ride this looks fun lol
👑 Wow!! This is so cool! America needs to step up it's game!👑
All this for a car park?!? woah
Grig B It has other destinations
This looks so awesome. Kinda reminds me of PIXAR's The Incredibles in a way.
This airport is so huge it can be considered a city! Good that they have these pods or else you would had to walk for hours!
Rajiv Krishna if it’s so huge, what is holding them back from having more runways?? Right now, they only have 2, one for landing, one for taking off. Whereas, O’hare in Chicago has 5 that they use most, and are building a 6th. During a busy time last week, I flew out of there, from when we left the gate, it was maybe 5 minutes until our wheels were off the ground.
Leesville Louisiana needs them desperately.
they run very well on a wet guideway. later parts of the system could have 4 guideways (2 in each direction) to reduce delay.
Omg this is so cool! So futuristic!!
the world is changing so fast
IMO the most functional and cheap is this standard semi-autonomous podcar guideway system with its disability access & room for luggage , baby prams, strollers esc. four seats, powered by just four cheap deep cycle lead acid car batteries. in the future this podcars may venture off the guideway system under full autonomous control & get better batteries for more range.
That is quite possibly the coolest thing I have ever seen!
It is. It's London Heathrow Airport. The 3rd largest airport (by people) in the world.
Of course. London Heathrow is one of the busiest airports in the world. Delays can be seen everywhere.
Looks like a nice peacefully ride.
they need these as taxis and buses it would save a lot of time and would be better for the planet
Finally in the future.. Total Recall.
Nice video. Its one of the nicer ones I've seen of the Heathrow Pods! Too bad about the rain drops.
This makes me think of something from the movie total recall.
Interesting concept hope they are heated looked like a dreary London day outside
Do you have to you the pod? Or there are other options to go between parking lots and terminals?
Thanks for traveling on Heathrow pod.. You see the influence of increasing drug tolerance everywhere these days -_- :p
this is the stuff we cant get in the US because of money going to where it shouldn't (entitlements, kickbacks, etc)
Carm N we could get it but we probably would have to pay like 50$
so true...
now walls
The wall that Mexico was suppose to pay for
It goes to WARS and MORE WARS!!
ARMY.
Fucking bullshit
Now that is one of the coolest things i have seen
sweet! cant wait to try it myself
'there's a slight delay'... i've heard that too many times at Heathrow.
@2012GST They tested them in the snow and they still worked.
Your video is very good
The 25mph top travel speed could be increased to 35/40mph easily. That 5 minute ride should probably be closer to 2 and a half, 3 minutes tops.
Great idea new way of transport
Thanks for upload ❤️
I love this.
You're in "A Johnny Cab".
I wonder if these turn homicidal as well. I'm sure driving in London has probably made one or two London cabbies go homicidal before. ;)
They did a great job
Now they need the gatwick pods
I'ts Half-Life 1 ))))
yes ^^
this is so cool
So is it on a rail?
i know what i am doing for 7 hours lol but seriously this look like fun
Love it!
Total Recall!!
, THIS IS THE FUTURE I TELL YA
I thought of a system like this on my own. I thought it would be a good system to replace buses in cities
thats where trains comes in play. they are driveless sometimes
are these manned by a driver or automated ?? Either way its amazing !
It's like logans run :o
And in Berlin they try since 2012 to open the new "BER" International Airport..... but no one knows WHEN the opening will take
place - and here is the real future, in Great Britain!
Where do sensor from rain. And clean the glass from view passenger and any trouble from outside. It is important.... Thanks
Notice they say for the "Business Car Park", not for the likes of the ordinary citizens. You still have to put up with slow buses, so if you miss your flight, tough!
Plebs don't do pods!
Looks great, works for me
Sooo freaking cool.
How does this vehicle handle passengers in a wheelchair, or could a city buy them equipped as such? The reason I ask is this would be a wonderful addition to our local ParaTransit service.
Reminds me of Totall Recall movie taxies.
This looks so cool!
Amazing! 👍
Awesome!
love the computerize British accent
I want a cannon that launches me to wherever I want. (Arrival not 100% guarantee)
Thats a HUUUGE airport :DD
Welcome to the Black Mesa Transit System
This is really cool
Why is it on the right side of the road?
LOOKS VERY FUTURISTIC
that is amazing
That's so cool!
Why is the parking so far away from the airport
I think they should make a car like this, spacious interiour, sliding electric doors, smooth ride, quiet.
How do these work?
That was quite a delay for a system that should know where all the pods are!
coolest vehicle for this 2, 3 years. how much? from japan.
ok, it seems like very modern, green and futuristic solution to reach a parking area very far away. But, isn't a bit expensive invest rather than electric shuttle bus or etc? Constructions, PODs and systems costs, operational costs and total investment must be very expensive. Is it worth to? or already business tickets (do use or not to use POD) and business car park fees includes the POD system costs?
It might be more expensive than conventional transportation, but in the long run the efficency probably outwieghs the trains. Costing less overtime. Investments add up to large corporations.
I assure you a airport is not made to wow its customers. In some form or another they have a method to it's madness.
These are great, need wipers, but they should be the replacement for the car in large cities. No matter about the cab drivers, technology must win out, and they find jobs in the new technology of driverless cubes.
Looks like something from the Jetsons.
this is so great
that is so cool!
How many cost such trip?
I'd like to see the device used for clearing snow from the track.
Man4Machine It would be possible, but it would be very tricky to get snow on the track, nevermind off it.
Man4Machine Don't be silly, it is London, not Minnesota.
+Man4Machine Track is probably heated in winter time.
+Man4Machine The device is called Stan. They got him a new shovel last week.
Man4Machine snow rarely sets in south England
Usually it melts then turns to ice causing even more trouble than snow itself lol
What are the advantages of POD cars versus light rail?
cost? maybe. but is always easy to just drop a couple of electric cars instead of building a whole light rail network.
So, from what I've read, one advantage is personal rapid transit (PRT) like PODcars are suppose to be more efficient and reduce congestion because, unlike buses and light rail (LR), they do not have to make obligatory stops where no one is waiting or needing to be dropped off. There is suppose to be less infrastructure than LR, but more than buses. Like you, I have have my suspicions.
As said above, cost is one. It's also more efficient in weight, size, and power consumption. This allows flexibility including service loops and very tight turns, and easier integration with existing infrastructre. And unlike light rail, wait times are negligible (vehicles wait for you) and trips nonstop from point to point. A disadvantage is that its top speed is 25 MPH, but since there are no intermediate stops, the average speed can surpass those of an APM or light metro.
(That is, about 45 km/h)
I live in Boston and traffic to/from Logan is AWFUL, why can't we have one of these?
Why does it drive on the wrong side of the road for the UK?!
***** You're seriously getting hung up on that. It doesn't matter.
Sounds like the voice from Fallout 4
"I'm sorry Dave, I can't allow you to leave."
