As someone who loves watching girl group survival shows, I gotta say that although there are some elements of what normal Kpop survival shows entail (such as the editing), A2K feels very different. For example, there's currently another girl group show airing right now called 'R U Next' and comparing the two, A2K seems to have a slightly more chill vibe. It's made me realize just how tense Kpop survival shows actually are, they are seriously NO JOKE. I've been seeing some mixed reactions to A2K for the exact reason that it's doesn't "feel" like other Kpop survival shows (and some people not liking the idea of a "global group"), but honestly I'm thoroughly enjoying it so far. The idea of a "global group" being created thru the Kpop training system has always intrigued me and it's one of the reasons I fell in love with the group XG.

    • @UnidentifiedAnon
      @UnidentifiedAnon Год назад +7

Also to add onto why Kpop survival shows can be very tense: Not only is the training a lot harder but certain actions/words will sometimes be purposefully edited out of context for the sake of a "good show" and it will have some trainees/contestants go from top rankings to elimination in the snap of a finger.

I think you guys would be shocked by how differently they do these idol shows in Korea with their trainees vs the one you're seeing here. Both are great but shows like "r u next" and "boys planet" are great if you want to see how they do them in Korea. Very fun and entertaining. but super competitive. there would be like 50+ trainees fighting for a 7-member debut lol

In A2K they cut out/don't include a few things, so that's why you will see some people singing and dancing and others just sing or dance. Alsò when they're singing there is no music they add the music in later (while editing). I don't know if that's the same for dancing though but I'm going to assume it is.They also have the people who audition have 2 dances and 2 songs but you'll usually only see 1 dance and 1 song. The reason why you only see a few people on the show is because they have to go through things(auditions) to get onto the show. They bring you into a room to interview you first (which at times you'll see the interviewing room)and then bring you into a room to audition and if they think you're good that means you'll be on the show! Which means you'll "audition " infront of Jyp. That means they pretty much already know who is going to be on A2K or not.
OH ALSO! You'll see a lot of people have the same song and dance because they only gave you a few songs and dances to choose from.

There is a survival show from HYBE called “R U Next?” which is airing right now. It’s also available on RUclips you should watch it. It has a different vibe than JYP’s survival show because it has more of a Korean style which is so different from western survival shows. You would enjoy it.
But I would actually recommend you to watch Boys Planet (produce 101) because it’s the most popular K-pop survival show in Korea. It has a pretty cool concept of having 99 contestants at the beginning but there will be only 9 members in the final line up. The newest boygroup that was created like 2 months ago debuted last week. The name of the group is ZeroBaseOne (ZB1). Each episode is like 2-3 hours long so you probably not gonna watch Boys Planet but I would still recommend you to watch their Debut MV “Bloom”💜

i would recommend another survival show called produced 101 season 1. it is by far the most popular kpop survival show to date and has led to the trend of the other survival shows we see today. btw every survival show brand starts with a girlgroup for their first season (except hybe's i-land) probably thanks to produce 101. personally i think this is a detriment to the girlgroups that form from these survival shows and their fans cause they are always used as the trial run. if the show flops, sucks for them, but if it is successful, their contracts will always be shorter, they have a lower budget for the show and after debut, they have less fans cause they are introducing the show to the general public, the rules are always unclear. when the second season comes around, its always a boy group and they get the benefit of the big fanbase, public recognition, bigger budget, longer contract, etc.

i dont believe it is required per se- but they are providing language lessons for the few months the trainees are in korea (this info isnt on the website anymore however i almost auditioned so i know all the details of it haha)

Some only sang and some only danced because they felt they needed more practice and he gave them a buy until Bootcamp to be ready ... This competition has probably the weakest singers compared to past competitions. There were no stand-out singers... That one former JYPE trainee was let go after a year of training and her audition showed why. But I think they're desperate at this point .... Watch ”RU-Next”, that's the caliber of singers dancers, and visuals considered minimal for training for K-pop... It's too bad the US is lacking in that area because its more of an individual Taylor Swift/ Billie Eilish market

While I've seen a couple good singing auditions and a couple good dancing auditions on the show, none have been "full package" performers, unfortunately. I sure hope we see some big improvements and shoring up of weaknesses during boot camp week.
It's hard to believe there weren't any truly great candidates, as there are always some stellar standouts in the other various talent competition shows we have here in the States. Gotta wonder if some quirk got flagged during the earlier rounds of auditions that weren't shown, or if they're embracing the Japanese notion of an idol, where you want to start with an imperfect framework and the public gets to follow along and see the improvement, as opposed to the polished "perfect gem" that comes AFTER all the training in the Korean system. It would be an interesting angle to expose those struggles, and it's something that has been done several times before in the States with the Making the Band series.
If that's the case, I don't really agree with that reality show model personally, especially with how young many of the contestants are. JYP and team got a lot of criticism for the harshness the girls faced during Sixteen, and it's clear that a more gentle approach was taken during Nizi Project. I had felt that "failing" auditions were specifically cut from being aired on A2K to save these youngsters from undue criticism in the public eye, but I do think that JYP always having some comment is the production setting up "storylines" for each girl for the audience to follow in subsequent episodes.
Meanwhile, things have been more impressive out of the gate on the boys show, Nizi Project season 2.

Unlike most other competition shows, the emphasis here is to make a group, rather than finding a single individual artist. Though JYP emphasizes a requirement that the artists have their individual charms and character, sometimes the nature of the “concept” for the project group means that a strong candidate doesn’t gel with the other potential members, so that person-though strong on their own rights-must be cut from the project team.
I refer to this show as NiziUSA, as it’s the American spin-off of Nizi Project (“rainbow project,” hence the multicolored gems), which was a competition show to put together a Japanese girl group. Running concurrently with A2K is Nizi Project season 2, which is focused on putting together a Japanese boy group this time around.

Also, JYP said at the start, k-pop has its roots in Western music, thanks to the influence of the music halls and dance clubs catering to the soldiers during and after the Korean War. Many of the artists of the first generation of k-pop were Korean-Americans who either went over themselves or were recruited by Korean entertainment agencies. As you can tell here, though, they’re looking to have a significant non-Asian ethnic makeup of the group, since they’ll promoting in N. America (and maybe other western regions), where a less homogenous group makeup is more actively desirable to better connect with and represent the fans of various ethnic backgrounds.

JYP is a solo artist, not from a group. These days he’s mostly focused on artist development and writing/producing for groups under his label, but he still puts out his own song around once a year. He most recently won an award for his solo work in 2015 as MNET’s Asian Music Awards’ Best Male Artist (equivalent to MTV Video Music Awards).
If you want a taste of his work, a couple years ago he put on a solo concert called JYP No 1 x 50 (which can be watched on RUclips) where he performs the 50+ songs he either performed, wrote, composed, produced, or choreographed that hit No. 1 on the music charts.
He’s got a personal connection to the heads of the other top k-pop agencies: In their youth, he used to be a dance rival in the clubs with Yang Hyun Suk, head of YG (Blackpink), and they maintain that friendly rivalry today by pitting their boy band trainees against each other in pre-debut battles. (Yang Hyun Suk is also a member of what became recognized as the very first k-pop group, Seo Taji and Boys.) Then for SM Entertainment (Red Velvet, NCT), there’s an apocryphal story where he auditioned for its head, Lee Soo Man, who failed him because JYP wasn’t handsome enough but still wanted to buy the song JYP wrote, leading to the founding of JYP’s on company. It later came out Lee Soo Man wasn’t actually present at that audition. And then Bang Si Hyuk, head of BigHit/Hybe (BTS), was JYP’s producing partner in JYP Entertainment’s early days, so a lot of the original artists were handled by both of them.
