CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Susanna (Winona Ryder) and Lisa (Angelina Jolie) sing "Downtown" to cheer up Polly.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
In 1967, 19-year-old Susanna (Winona Ryder) feels that "reality is becoming too dense" and is diagnosed with Borderline Personality Disorder. The doctor suggests to her parents that she be committed to the Claymore Hospital, and she spends the next 18 months struggling with her troubled psyche and the bizarre world of the institution. Susanna bonds with several other patients, including Lisa (Angelina Jolie), Polly (Elizabeth Moss), and Georgina (Clea DuVall). As she realizes that Lisa is potentially dangerous and truly needs help, Susanna begins to work harder with her psychiatrist (Vanessa Redgrave) and the nurse on the ward (Whoopi Goldberg). But Susanna soon learns that getting out of the hospital is not as easy as getting in. Girl, Interrupted was based on the autobiography of Susanna Kaysen, who really did spend a year-and-a-half in the McLean Psychiatric Hospital in Belmont, Massachusetts.

"If talking did sh*t, we'd be out of here by now"
Bear Donnell 🤭
so true 😒
Since all the time
Anyone who has related to Lisa and feels lost and hopeless please read the book. Lisa is real, she survived and she got out of the hospital and had a son and led a happy life. There is hope. Even when the pain lasts for years and years.
Therapy hasn't ALLWAYS got your best interests in heart, unfortunately, and these mental health workers, some of them are so bad they shouldn't be in any sort of care role! Then most are good some exceptional, but those that are bad ruin the industries reputation
1:13 I love it when lisa joins in & starts singing ❤
Also Angelina's voice 💞
honestly ive been replaying this video for an hour because of her voice
Yes,false.A cannot sing.
X2
One of the only times in the movie Lisa shows happiness that isn’t at the expense of another person.
Yeah, that doesn't happen very often!
She literally is all about getting the orderly fired tho.
Scenes like this make me believe Lisa was never a FULL Sociopath. She had moments where she was able to flip her personality and actually feel compelled to do things out of her own good will. Especially at the end once she was told to be dead inside, and then in the hospital she admits she wasn't fully dead inside and she actually had hope within.
Sociopaths have no empathy. They can still have emotions and attachments
I think your mixing psychopath with socio
I think it was just a move to gain Susannas trust and sympathy. She wasn't happy that the girl stopped crying, her only focus was Susanna
@@tylervictor8233 even psychopaths, sociopaths and psychopaths are the same thing really, it's a miss naming that's common in Hollywood. Both are just a lack of empathy, it doesn't mean you can't know the social cues and what you are meant to do, it just means you don't have the care for others
@@goopguy548 Psychopaths have the ability to deregulate their own emotions. They can choose not to care about the consequences of their actions on others. But they can choose not to turn that empathy off when it comes to the rare few close to them like their own kids or families. Psychopathy is not a complete lack of empathy, it's the ability to turn off empathy in order to put your own goals above everything else.
Can you belive Wynnona was 27 and Jolie was 24 in this movie? I used to think she was actually 19 and Jolie was about the same age
Same !
How old was lisa rowe?
Who do u think are lisas parents? I have always been so excited about it, i have this theory that doutor wick is lisas mom
@@ju6225 20, I think
very believable. there's just 5-8 years difference.

I know! I wish she'd sing more often. Her voice is pretty.

ILOVEHER SHE'S ICONIC AND GOOD AT INSTRUMENTS
Yeah!!! 🥺💖💖💖
I rly wanted it to end with susannah getting out and going to the men’s wards to tell John that she was ready to go see a movie with him sometime... he was so cute and sweet!!!
mikida 396066 same
let’s not forget that he fornicated w a patient in the mental asylum he was employed at. I’m not too sure if the laws regarding asylum patients and prisoners are the same but if so, Susannah couldn’t consent to anything they did. it was super inappropriate of him to go for it. he’s lucky he was transferred and not outright fired. if it hadn’t been the 60’s, he would’ve been.
Uh no
@@janagaber9429 ew
Unfortunately, the movie was based on a true story, so they couldn’t choose for this to happen...
Susanna Kaysen wrote the book as a memoir, it was real. A lot of the movie was changed and sensationalized duh. But you know, it’s not done in the same way most institution “crazy people” movies are. Between the ages of 14-18 I lived in a psychiatric institution for minors who had been kicked out of every group home and psych ward (all different things) and sure it was a different time period. They’ll still restrain us and drag us and even cut our nails and watch us shower, it makes me feel lonely when people think that stuff stayed in the 60s. I don’t understand people my age or the world because of the time I did there. And yeah people don’t steal keys and read their stolen charts lol but the sisterhood and love and incomparable bonds that don’t need words was portrayed EXACTLY right and for me I’ve never felt that in a movie about where I grew up that is always in horror movies about killers
My favorite thing about the book and the movie, is how they make everyone a person and their reason for being there matter of fact. It’s empathetic in every sense.
🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗
That's beautiful. Thanks for sharing.
I was also abused in a psychiatric hospital in a major city when I was a teenager, in 2013. It definitely still happens.
I stayed in one of these as well. Similar but not completely the same. We never got to go anywhere! But so similar with not being allowed to be out of rooms at night, meds, not being allowed phones or razors, common room, etc.
"You're gonna get me fired."
LOL It might be worth it! 😁😁
luke ketchum. I would love to do Winnoa. She's beautiful.
You got that right. If i was that boy, id be leaving out of that hospital carrying a box of personal belongings the next morning.
@@tigerbay1000 Same.
@George Palumbo, you shouldn’t sexualize women like that. Yeah she’s pretty but you shouldn’t say that you want to do her aloud, much less on a social media platform. It’s rude and when you fetishize a woman like that it makes them more like an object than a real person. Now obviously she’s never going to see this comment but still. Keep it to yourself sir.
@@tigerbay1000 you are disgusting ..
I was 8 when this movie dropped. I remember crying at this scene because it feels overwhelming happiness when someone help you crawl out of a deep dark hole.
I was 14 at the time, and it shook me to my core. 8 years old though….?
You watched this at 8??
@roboticsandwich8139 well, yes! 🫠
Two beautiful ladies
I can't get enough of Winona's voice, it's so adorable
Yess she has a eally pretty voice
I always found this scene sad how Torch broke down bc she knows most likely many people, men would shun her away due to her face being burnt, knowing the privilege of finding love was very small for her.
at 1:04, for a mere few seconds, you can almost see that last little hint of empathy left within Lisa
She was just projecting the whole time. The 60s were a hard time for people like her.
@@jaserchamchay9337 still a hard time for anti social
This omitted my favorite part when they show “Torch” on the other side of the door comfortably listening.
That is why i love "Downtown" song.. Because of this scene..ilove Angie the way she is..
Me too!❤
Winona Ryder and Angelina Jolie collaboration is the best❤️
Love this song!!! Lisa has a heart after all
I just find this song so heart-warming..so peaceful and touching
Underrated film
I only wanted to watch 10 minutes of the movie but I ended up watching an hour of it cause it was so captivating, the story, the characters. Also I love the Girl Power kind of vibe this movie has, it literally makes me proud to be a girl at some point cause they are strong, quirky, funny women like most women out there 🖤
Here's the real question/deal of what's going on here...
Was this really a huge breakthrough for Lisa? Was she really genuine on caring for another person (Polly), or was this part of her manipulation as her being a Sociopath?
This is honestly a real legitimate question. I think this is really honestly the viewer's perspective on their point of view. Which is why this is legitimately such a great flick and why Angelina Jolie won the Oscar for this!
She was just having fun and humoring Susanna, I think. Diagnosed sociopaths (Lisa’s character included) can feel genuine affection, if not empathy, for other people, and I think Lisa liking/loving Susanna is a pretty strong theme throughout the film. While Lisa doesn’t seem to care about Polly much, she never seems to say no to having a good time with a friend (Susanna). Not necessarily malicious manipulation, not inherently a benevolent act; just spur-of-the-moment id fulfillment, which I think Lisa’s character centers around a lot.
I’ll tell you what, they seem much more stable then most with those diagnosis.
Yeah, Angelina's acting ability is on full display in this movie!
I like when Lisa smile 💗
I love this song because of this scene 😁
Same :)
What song is it? :)
@@graciadelatorre6130 'Downtown' - Petula Clark
Lisa was soo joyful & alive 💞
She was never really dead. Just misunderstood. A girl simply interrupted...😊
This scene is so heart-warming I love it.
There should be a movie about Lisa about her past, as it is so hidden and we don't know what happened. Does she have brothers or sisters? Why did her parents put her in the psychiatric hospital when she was so young? Why does she say that her parents wanted her dead? To be honest, in one of the last scenes after Lisa read Susanna's diary and Susanna runs from her while she talks, she was venting, and I have this thought that if Susanna hadn't interrupted Lisa at her breakdown, she would have told a lot more than her past and we would all know much more about her. Ughhhh why Susana?!?!
Idk much but Lisa was very young when she was sent to the hospital. She and her parents werent in touch. She had a brother. And he was the only one in her family she was still in touch with. But mostly he used to get her a lawyer to get what she wanted. She wore her title "sociopath" as a crown. She said, and I quote, "we are very rare and we are mostly men." she used to sneak out a lot but the people of the hospital usually found her after a day. Sometimes she managed more. After susanna was released, lisa got out of the hospital too. They met after years. And lisa had a son. If you want to know more, you can read the book. Its the same title as the movie. Hope this helped:)

Amazing how no one recognises Elizabeth Moss as polly. She's now the biggest actor of all of them now thanks to the handmaids tale. Clea duvall was in it too.

Queria Winona lançasse um album de musicas romanticas.
The next time I heard this song on film was the movie “Escape Room” & one of the characters was criticizing it
Beautiful 🥰
Winona telling anyone its ok, come here is worth getting fired over.
at night, there are 5-6 nurses on staff. they are loud, and they check on you every 15 minutes.
It says in the book that she once passed Lisa with a daughter on the subway ( I think it was ) wonder if the real Lisa ever saw the movie? Would be interesting to find out her story after she got out
It was a son not daughter
she's not really gonna get ya fired. yar getting yarself fired, maybe.

Winona should have won for this and crucible
This scene I presume points out that people with BPD and sociopathy act on impulses (or behave recklessly). At least so it seems.
Winona🎈❤️❤️
The only bad thing about this movie IS: It got an end... U.u
