In the Team Fortress 2 beta (I think) there's a video on it somewhere, the spy was going to have an animation to get to reverse grip, however, valve removed because they thought it was too "distracting"
actually there used to be a really long animation for the spy taking out his knife and doing things just like you suggested but it was removed because of that exact reason. here is a video. ruclips.net/video/iPZjDTDwJIs/видео.html
Big Flips hey your that guy in this video :D Small world...always good to see fellow flippers keeping the culture alive. Also no music in slowmo...distracting...very good otherwise
remember the point of this trick isnt to successfully complete the trick, its to gain enough momentum with your knife to fling out of your hand and with enough luck kill the enemy
spy-Yes time to shine Spy-*tries to do the trick but keeps failing* enemy spy-here *does it for him* spy-thanks enemy spy- no problem spy-W A I T A S E C O N D
He does that before he flips it into the stab motion at the end of the video. Anyway, it turns out I was wrong about the second motion where he flips the knife to stabbing posture he just switches the grip.
reason why spy doesnt do that is the knife raises up faster than doing the cool trick, and you really dont want to make a slow move in tf2 cuz its a fast paced game
The move IS way cooler but would take longer, and the animation needs to be accurate to when the spy can back stab, its also why his unsheath animation when you swap to the knife is pretty simple compared to the original knife trick he did
To anyone having trouble, I tried hovering my index finger directly above the part that I had it on originally. You also have to wait for both handles to point straight up to pull your finger out. Basically just watch the slow motion again
Great tutorial man, really appreciate all the detailing, like how after every stage in the trick you revert back to the start of the trick and talk through every motion in order again. Genuinely really helpfull.
Fun fact; Spy actually did originally have a trick animation before his actual backstab "stance", however it was cut from the game for practicality reasons. You can see it in the pre-launch trailer, alongside Scout's cut Nailgun primary, Medic's syringe, and Demoman's dynamite bundle. The more you know.
This is a pretty simple yet cool trick. I pretty much have it down in 5 minutes and I haven’t flipped or even tried to learn in a 2 years. But I am on a new knife I got today... my only problem is removing my index finger at the end
yeah really focus on starting low and ending high. that will give you the most momentum. if you are really stuck just skip it and learn some other stuff and come back. some times you just need more time flipping to get more familiar with the knife
Great video! Interestingly enough, this is how Spy was originally going to get into position to backstab targets. The animation was too long, however, so it was scrapped and replaced with the boring, yet quicker motion.

my other fingers constantly try and stop the second leg right before catching it at the end, and i mean i literally think to move them out of the way for the spin and they literally always keep moving back in to catch the leg
The first time i see this video i was like "Dude, that's impossible", then after a several times i try, i don't know why i can do this move, and i was like, "What was that?"🤣🤣
try doing double rollover to backhand twirl to helix (helix includes this move, i think) then to an icepick aerial (might stab fingers due to blade momentum, dont actually do this)
Jason Griffin I also ran into this problem and usually ended up holding the knife upside-down by the safe handle with my fingers perpendicular to the knife. I needed my fingers (especially my index finger) to be parallel to the knife so the bite handle could swing up. I found a trick to removing the index finger out on time by: 1)holding lower on the handle with last 3 fingers and keeping the index finger stretched straight and at a 45° angle facing compared to Big Flips 90° index finger and higher grip w/ last 3 fingers at 1:52. 2) Then throw the bite handle with blade in tow over the stretched index finger and surprisingly it will still roll over and pop out of the way naturally and you'll catch the handles with the web of your thumb/index.
I almost gave up when I first tried it and not pushing it all at once worked for me I think the stress builds up inside you if you try it too long which can lead to not focusing or shakey hands so just take it slow
Hey BIG FLIPS just wanted to thank you for the amazingly helpful tutorials. It felt so good when I did my first y2k. Keep the excellent content comin'!
Because I good around so much with the Bali song I was able to get it as soon as you showed the grip thanks for being a clear teacher it has made this so much fun
I think the only reason there isn’t the reverse index animation is because backstabs don’t need a raising animation to initiate, which is why chain stabs exist, and also why the Conniver’s Kunai is a basic murder health kit
I finally got it down! For people who can't get it (like me,) the thing that helped was not doing it in one go. After you spin the knife around your index finger, try just catching the safe handle. After getting good at that, you can swing the bite handle up and catch it to finish. Once you get good at that, combine the two and you will have done the trick! Hope this has helped.
Took me two days and a very bruised hand, but I got it down. That was a month ago. Still practicing it. Easy af now. I can even do it holding the bite handle with out getting cut... which is what I prefer because it actually puts the blade towards the enemy.
I struggled for a while but I finally figured it out. Don’t do any change of force. Don’t try to compensate and to try to keep it on track. Make sure there is absolutely no change of flow...
Originally the spy would do this when he raised his knife but the Developers decided it was to long of an animation. This is why he has a more simple flip in modern tf2. Btw gr8 vid m8 :)
I just started a few weeks ago so I can’t really do this trick, but I found a easier but not quite as cool way to do it. So you just switch you middle finger and pointer finger, so you can kinda grab safe handle in the end with your thumb and pointer finger. I was able to do it after just a minute.
If you inspect the knife in tf you get a trick. The only problem with doing any type of rollover is that it takes too long for the animation to play out and when you stab the animation would cut off. In tf the animation cuts off if you are quick anyways but the animation is short enough that a frame skip is unnoticeable.
I do love your tutorials. Thank you... I just have one question, why do you open with "Hello boys"... I'm female, just beginning the beautiful flipping journey and hoping to find more female flippers out there. Just wondering.....🤷🏽♀️🇿🇦🌻

CyMations to be fair , the beta deploy animation was longer and flashier , but was only replaced because it would " distract " people
Also they'd have to make sounds for it which could be heard by the person you're about to backstab and blow your cover
yes because the spy is underpowered as it is
also because your enemies can hear you making does clicking sounds

The Spy actually used to do a flashy trick when he moved the knife to that downwards position, but the devs removed it for being "too distracting."
If he did that, the time between clicking and the actual kill would be way too long.
That animation is played whenever behind a player, before a click

If you inspect the knife in tf you get a trick.
The only problem with doing any type of rollover is that it takes too long for the animation to play out and when you stab the animation would cut off.
In tf the animation cuts off if you are quick anyways but the animation is short enough that a frame skip is unnoticeable.
