Hi Whitney. Love the hat!! Lollipop flower looks lovely on it! Thanks for the free pattern! You are such an inspiration to all of us!! Love your video's!!
Hi Withney, thank you so much for your tutorials and for this hat pattern, I made this hat today, love it! with your clear tutorial I was able to accomplish this project even when I am a begginer, thanks
I have used both tutorials. I will admit I had troubles with the band on the first one. This new tutorial worked out much better for me. I am super happy with my new hat made out of upcycled jeans. I have been wearing it around the house since I finished it! Thank you!!!
Whiitney, I think this hat is adorable, thank you for the free pattern and tutorial, it’s much appreciated. I will be making some of your other items as well. Good luck to you.
I like both versions :-) Your first one helped me to learn how to assemble welding caps; I couldn't understand their written instructions but tweaked it with your original video assembly :-D Thank you for your awesome great tuts! I've been watching and learning from you since 2015.
Thank you so much sweetie! I am going to make one. I am going to retire soon after 43 years of school bus driving and am looking for things that are fun to do. Keep up the great videos.
Thank you so much, I downloaded the pattern. I don't wear too many hats, but this one is so cute, I will really need to make it and wear it. Great job and thanks for sharing your talents so generously.
Excellent tutorial. I wasn't sure what seam allowance you were using so I winged it and it worked for the hat. You might consider teaching to press at each step; it's a good thing to learn to do as you go and it makes things look more handmade than homemade. Great tutorial!!
I tried making a similar hat a while ago without a real pattern, and I failed miserably. So glad I found your tutorial, it is very nice and clear. I will definitely give it another shot soon. Thanks so much for the free pattern!
Thank you for the great tutorial and pattern. I was able to resize it to fit a large stuffed bunny I made several year ago. He's so cute with his new hat.
Go to whitneysews.com then click the shop tab. You will see the hat listing there. Put it in your cart then check out. There will be a download button after checking out. Click that and the pattern will save to the downloads file on your computer.
So Cute.... Do You have a Newborn Pattern for this Sweet News Boy Cap. ..in Feb. We are Welcoming Our First Great Grand Child....Thank You for making Your Tutorials Look So Simple. You're Just Amazing 🌟⚜️🌟
I love the pattern it was very easy and quick to make. I think my printer did something funky with the sizing of the pattern. It fit my 6 year old instead of me. As I was using my stash it had Disney evil Queen lining which made her happy. Now I just need to make a bigger one for me.
I have been looking for a hat like this for bleeding ever, from when I was in High School as a matter of fact. It is similar to the hat worn by KlausMeine of the German rock group the Scorpions in one of my favorite songs, Send Me an Angel from 1990 or so. His was HarleyDavidson (I think) and I hate leather. If this pattern works, I can make one from Denim instead. Not a fan of that flower, but buttons will work for me. Thanks very much (I learned to sew when I was about 5 years old.)
I finished the hat and am very pleased but i'm not sure if i missed something or not. Is the underside of the brim supposed to show the rough edge? I looked back and watched the video a couple of times and not sure where i missed the step. Thank you.
Hi Whitney, I love your tutorials, and thanks for the free pattern. I plan to make a hat this weekend. I bought some satin for the lining. Question: Where do you get your embellishments from?
Another question. I did watch your old tutorial (this one is waaaay better) and that hat was not as slouchy in the back. The amount of slouch this black hat has is just what I want, is there a reason for that? Was the pattern exactly the same or did you fiddle with it for the second one? (A couple of tutorials I saw were too slouchy or looked like a pillow on the top of thier head which is what I don't want.) Thanks again.
Whitney, I love your tutorials. I'm in the process of following this one right now. In the video, when you are putting together the body pieces, how much seam allowance are you using? I'm asking because most of the sewing courses I've taken always had us sew with 5/8 seam allowances for regular seams, but the picture on the video of the two body sections being sewn together look narrower than the 5/8 seam that I'm using. I'm afraid my cap might end up too small or not quite right if I don't do it just like you did.
I use between a quarter and half inch. I have a small head so I sew mine closer to a half inch, but when I'm sewing for someone with an average or larger sized head I use closer to a quarter inch. If you are not sure what to use I would recommend making a practice hat from old fabric.
@@Whitney_Sews Thank you. Yes. I think shortening the seam allowance from over a half inch (5/8") to a quarter inch (2/8") makes a big difference! Except for the seam binding, that I still need to put in, I finished it today. It came out great! I sewed it using the shorter 1/4" seam allowance. I guess my head is kind of big.
I really love this hat and would like the pattern but really don't want to add my credit card details for something that is free. Is there any other way to get the pattern? Thank you
I was just reading the pattern, and it says that the band is both 1 1/2 and 1 3/4 wide, which is accurate? (What us your black hat made of out of curiosity, it isn't the same fabric as the tan one in the tutorial.) Thanks again.
Thank you so much for this tutorial! I'm trying to make this hat for my husband and the hat body pattern is too small for his head. How do I adapt the hat body to fit his 24.5inch head? Thanks!
+cafluffull You can cut them out just a tiny bit bigger than the pattern and use a seam allowance that is between 1/8 and 1/4 inch. That should be enough adjustment as long as you are using the PDF version of the pattern (Not the old, hard to print version). I recommend making a test version first just to double check the size.
I have always used something heavier for the hats like denim or twill so they hold the shape nicely. Have never tried cotton. You would need at least a medium weight interfacing if not heavy weight. Not sure how it will look in the end though.
I would recommend making a sample hat first. You can try the pattern as is or try cutting out each piece about an 1/8 inch larger than the pattern. It's better for the top to be a little big because it can be pleated down to fit the hat band. Hope that helps.
I finally have time to make these hats. I was just cutting pieces and I have enough scraps of denim for three. (Black, medium blue leafy-ish and a light blue/tan floral denim) Anyhow, in your PDF regarding the hat band; it says **1 1/2 by 1/2/3**, which is the actual width? I know that I need the length to be around my forehead. I cut them 2 inches so that I can narrow them if necessary. Also, is interfacing 100% needed? (Sorry to be a "pester-pie" as my granny used to say.) Thanks.
I printed the pattern as is, but the hat body was 29 inches in circumference, the hat band only 21. That is not just "a couple of pleats, it was several and with denim. I still have two hats to finish because I have no choice. I am rather disappointed.
I meant to ask, what is the circumference of the band on your hat? I know that the body pattern flat end is about 4 1/2 inches, times 6 is around 27 inches. I also have a smaller head and want to make sure that I don't have to resize the body pieces because the pleats are too bulky for denim. Thanks. I already have the denim scraps for three hats picked out too.
I always include little pleats in my hats, even when sewing denim. But you can adjust the seam allowance if you want so there is less excess. The reason the black hat fit better is because I was making it for myself and took a slightly larger seam allowance. The khaki hat was one I was making to sell so I did it a little different.
@@Whitney_Sews I do like the slouch on your black one, but the one in your old tutorial didn't have hardly any slouch in the photo. That is why I asked, the one in the old tutorial is not what I am looking for. Thanks again.
The old pattern was done years ago and was not in PDF format so it didn't always print the right size. I've updated it to a PDF so it should always print the right size now. Also the single band with binding shown in this version allows for a larger head too. So if you do it the updated way you should get a better fit.
Did you make sure the pattern printed full page with no scaling or margins? That can affect the pattern size. You can also use a slightly smaller seam allowance to gain some room. Otherwise try scaling up the pattern piece. I wouldn't add another section because it will make the hat look different since there would then be an odd number of pieces
I would love instructions on how to make this smaller for a child. I used the first pattern to make a cap for a Christening outfit for my grandson. Now it's years later, a new grandson, a new hat to sew... and I don't remember how I was able to get it the right size.
Sorry, but I'm not sure. I made a baby sizes hat once and wasn't super happy with how it turned out. That was several years ago so I don't even remember what I did.
everything went fine until the last press and sew, somehow the hat band turned out smaller in the back and I didn't really get along with the hemming tape. Next time I'll try your old version of this hat, maybe two bands will be better than hemming.
It means that I don't currently have a security license for my site (because it's a costly yearly purchase). But since you wouldn't be entering any payment info it's no big deal. I'm currently upgrading my site and the new upgrades will include the security license. If you prefer to wait until then you can, all the new updates should be done in a couple of weeks.

very nice tutorial but i have a question why not just stitch the outside and the lining at the same time? unless ur making a hard hat, by rights, there is no reason to float the liner. its much easier also because both sewn patterns don't need to match.
I'm not quite understanding. You mean when the six body pieces are sewn together have the outer and lining back to back and sew to the next? That would leave visible seam allowances on the inside of the hat.
Whitney Sews - u sew both the inner and outter layers in the same fashion why not just stack each outter and liner piece and skip the nestling of the inner and outter layers?
Whitney Sews - ok, i was confused you reverse the outter layer and inner layer seams so they face each other. my apolologies for the confusion and thank you for the clarification.

I used your link and it cost me $2 and I still don’t have a download yet. Threes no link to the pattern feeling ripped off where’s the pattern and why did it cost me $2 for a free download?
My website does not have a place to enter a credit card number. I'm guessing you clicked one of the ads Google placed on my site and it took you to a pop up ad. If any of the buttons were not purple then it was not one of my site's buttons. So please monitor your card and file a dispute for the $2 charge because it was not from me.
I tried to get the pattern and it says this site is unsafe and has misleading content.
Someone claimed I was requiring a credit card number for the free pattern (I wasn't) so Google flagged it as a misleading page :/
I’m just here to make a jotaro hat
If the pattern is free why do you ask for credit card information.
I used to sell the patterns so my site is set up as a shop. However the patterns are all free now so you do not need to fill in any credit card info.
You have to put in a charge card, WTF?
No, you don't have to enter a credit card number to complete the checkout.
