- 🏛️ Step into the lost history of Gyeonghuigung Palace...
Seoul has five major palaces from the Joseon Dynasty, yet the most forgotten among them is Gyeonghuigung.
Once a royal residence where kings ruled the country, today only a few remaining structures remind us of its past.
📍 The Historical Significance of Gyeonghuigung
✔️ Built by King Gwanghaegun, originally named ‘Gyeongdeokgung’
✔️ The site where King Jeongjo was enthroned, later relocated to Changdeokgung due to an assassination attempt
✔️ Most of its buildings were dismantled during King Gojong’s reconstruction of Gyeongbokgung
✔️ Used as schools and administrative offices during the Japanese occupation, erasing much of its history
✔️ Today, sites like the Salvation Army building and the Seoul Museum of History occupy its former grounds, making restoration difficult
📍 Traces of the Lost Palace
✔️ Heunghwamun, the main gate, was dismantled by Japan, repurposed as the entrance to the Shilla Hotel, and later returned to Gyeonghuigung
✔️ Geumcheongyo Bridge, once in front of the palace, now stands alone near the Seoul Museum of History
✔️ Taryeongjeon, a shrine with traces of Kings Sukjong and Yeongjo
✔️ Hwanghakjeong, originally the royal archery range, now relocated to Inwangsan Mountain
