To celebrate the opening of the 2016 F1 season in Australia, here's a little gem from 1958 and the Melbourne Grand Prix held at Albert Park on November 30th of that year.
Drivers included Jack Brabham, Stirling Moss, Bib Stillwell, Doug Whiteford, Alec Mildren, Arnold Glass, Stan Jones, Len Lukey and many more. It appears Sabrina was a bit of a star too!

I recall being there at 8 years of age. Can remember the racing cars lined up for viewing and the hay bails. I probably played on the swings and seesaw. Dad worked for Repco in their motor winding department. He was involved with parts for the future Repco Brabham.

The golden age of racing. I was 2 when this was raced. Love the design of the D Type Jaguar. Not much in the way of safety for the drivers and the race fans.

Might have been there. I remember seeing cars racing at Albert Park. I was about 5.Unfortunately I cannot confirm it. That was a beautiful bit of road, well and truly wrecked to build a new F1 track in the 90’s . I loved driving around it.

Thanks for sharing it's fantastic to see F1 in Aus in 1958 and the likes of Jack, Stirling and knowing that Alan Jones was a young boy watching that race right then...while his Dad took part. Seeing how the track was back then was remarkable, I love the way people could get so close to the action, cars and drivers in general... the fear and danger only added to the magic that F1 has lost today... It's a great shame to see how little the AGPC has really done to make the event any better or more famous than it was then today, what an absolute loss of opportunity.....and lack of business wisdom....Lets hope Chase Carey gives John Harden a really good kick up the backside because he clearly knows little about this sport... The current AGPC mission statement is woefully pathetic in anything it suggests. It shows it has no vision for the future at all.... or understanding of social media as a tool and the like.... in the 21 century.

I was there, I was eleven at the time, but my motivation at that age was to see Sabrina with her 42's which I did, but also saw some classic racing.

Watch 4:35, the bosomy 'Sabrina', the UK's answer to Hollywood's Jayne Mansfield. Watch again at 5:16 as Stirling Moss, arguably the greatest racing driver in the history of the sport engages in conversation with the blonde bombshell. As any competent lip reader will tell you, the crumpet-chasing Moss is observed warning the young lady: "Don't point those things at me; they may go off!"

Check out the the Holden twin cam crossflow engine at 3.47 ! Why didn't Holden keep going with real engines like these. They could have been the number 1 cars in the world. Unfortunately the clowns at Holden Australia had no foresight, or perhaps under orders from GM USA to build backward road cars. Yes Holdens were very reliable in the 40's 50's 60's & 70's, but should have all had 4 speed gearboxes from the early 60's & some models should have been more sport orientated as well since the X2 engines. Unfortunately they went backwards since the introduction of the 173 ci engines & German Opal 202 ci engines with the tiny camshafts. The only other decent Holden 6 was the XU1. What a shame & a loss for Australian Holden manufacturing. After the early Holden Red motors, 179 ci, 186 ci & XU1 they didn't make a decent motor until the 253 ci & 308 ci V8 engines. After that it was all down hill.

What an incredibly beautiful circuit. Dangerous as hell though. And a mix of types. And there goes Bob Jane of T-Mart and Bathurst fame. That's one of the great things about the Internet. RUclips and wonderful sites like this allow me to keep learning about my passion. Good on ya mate 👍

This race always causes confusion because in 1958 there was the AUSTRALIAN Grand Prix held at Bathurst in NSW and the MELBOURNE Grand Prix, a seperate, event held at Albert Park in Melbourne

Crikey.., I was 3 months old then1958… in 1976 at Bathurst I stood behind Brabham and Moss on pit lane before the race during an interview with channel 7! I’ll fated start then … I got a signature from Jack with him sitting in his 1961 cooper at Indy before he passed., Underrated driver in history
