It's a parable to illustrate that you can campaign, take to the streets to protest, and vote for different parties... but nothing ever changes. Fifty years on they've been proved right.
"A change, it had to come, we knew it all along." ~ Optimism on the streets whilst they protest in expectation of an improved situation... but then the realisation hits:
"And the world looks just the same, and history ain't changed." ~ and then they reiterate:
"There's nothing in the street, looks any different to me."
"And the parting on the left, Is now a parting on the right.
And the beards have all grown longer overnight."~ In fact the only things that ever change are fashion and hairstyles.
"Meet the new boss, same as the old boss." ~ Parties and politicians come and go, but, by and large, nothing ever changes.

But they're also talking about somebody like Trump, with his BS and his now preaching straight out tyranny and being a dictator in what used to be the Land of the Free and the Home of the Brave. They're attacking women now - the so-called "weaker sex." Babycakes, they ain't seen nothing yet. Remember that really old verse: HELL HATH NO FURY LIKE A WOMAN SCORNED. Read those lyrics again and again and again and then start paying attention to the news - but not on Fox or any of the other right-wing outlets. Focus on reality. And if you can't still figure out what those lyrics mean, then you're one of them. But that won't save you, because you don't have the right colored skin.

Song was done in 1971. This is in 1978. Sadly it was the last time they would play together. The drummer Keith Moon passed away about 3 months later.
Such a huge loss! But Beatle drummer, Ringo Starr’s son, Zack Starky plays with them now.
The last phrase sums up the entire song. "Meet the new boss, same as the old boss".

Pay attention to the bass player. John Entwistle.. One of the best bass guitarists in the history of Rock. His nickname was Thunderfingers.. He played the bass like it was a lead guitar, with low notes.

Drummer Keith Moon (died 9/1978) taught Ringo STARR’s (Beatles drummer) son Zac, to play the drums and Zac is now the drummer for The Who.
About two months after this was recorded I believe.
I’ve loved The Who, since I was eight years old, as I get older, my favorite has become” love rain o’er me”. so many great songs though

One of the great British bands of the 60/70s.Check out their performance at Woodstock and the film Tommy with Tina Turner as the Acid Queen.
i second what Jan says. I'd also love to say that this band exploded onto the London "Mod" scene in the mid 1960's and had a career with new music being released and charting up till the mid 1880's! They have continued to tour although they are down to two elderly original core members. They were known for crazy live shows just usings their intruments, their temperments (they often fought and clashed but never really broke up) and the vibe they'd create - destroying instruments, knocking heads with mikes (yeah it did happen!!) - stealing the spotlight VERY often from more well known artists they'd be opening for in England and America! In 1968 they played the great west coast festival, Monteray Pop, and knew they were sharing a stage that night with Otis Redding and Jimi Hendrix (!!!!)....it was quite a three way battle. The very next year they had a explosive night at the first Woodstock Fest' and blew the crowd away again playing a evening slot against hard rock acts like Ten Years After and funk revolutionaries Sly and the Family Stone. In the early 1970's, and I cannot recommend this newly discovered filmed clip of them, they were part of a feature length filmed concert event held by their "friends", The Rolling Stones. Also on the bill were members of the Beatles and Joe Cocker, but it was the Who, with their new song, the first rock opera they ever wrote, "A QUICK ONE, WHILE HE'S AWAY", that stole the show, the crowd went wild during the two recorded versions put on film that night, so much so that the Rolling Stones, dumped the entire film for almost 40+ years, only recently restored, the video is a MUST WATCH for You! I hope You enjoy and read this!
Listen to the Tommy album (the movie is godawful); Quadraphenia is a better rock opera. Listen to Live at Leeds, not Woodstock.

The Who and The Kinks were way better than the Rolling Stones. Although the latter had some amazing songs, I can't just listen to all their songs without skipping some awful ones. Lady Jane for starters - it's just embarrassing.

Yep, there were laser shows back then. I sold multi-media shows that included special sound f/X, projectors, graphics, and lasers. Most of them were multi-screen and surrounded the entire venue. We were contracted to do with for corporate events, sports events, live theater, and rock shows. We would pack them up after each show and move them from location to location.
You (almost completely) misunderstood this song. This is a UK band, they were singing vaguely about politics (Not US politics). They were not referencing Vietnam at all, and when they sing about "constitution" they did NOT mean the constitution of the united states. The song was not anti-revolution despite the lyric "We'll be fighting in the streets", although they did stress that any revolution could be unpredictable.

FYI, This is the group that sings the opening for CSI Las Vegas, Miami, New York and The Masked Singer. The song is Who Are You. They did a movie Tommy which is a rock opera.

Saw that,don't understand why. Shitty title,sounds like something for kids. Even for the 70s there are lyrics not suitable for young ears. Thing is I listened to the album last week. I think you could release some of their tracks now and they would still sound new .

I saw them in Nashville, TN, a few years ago. They still rock it.
The Who are performing several gigs in London in March for their annual Teenage Cancer Trust charity concerts. 25 years ago, The Who created Teenage Cancer Trust which raises funds to build houses similar to the Ronald McDonald Houses all over the world, but geared toward teenagers who are battling cancer. Squeeze is the open act for The Who this year. Eddie Vedder, Robert Plant, and several other rockers are also performing.

The song’s brilliant lyrics are about a revolution (probably fits most so-called revolutions) that promised better life under a new constitution but which, in the end, changed nothing. They sing “a change, it had to come, we knew it all along, and “we were liberated from the fold, that's all, and the world looks just the same”… Realizing that they fell for the false promise of change they sing, “We don't get fooled again, no, no” and finally they end with “meet the new boss same as the old boss”. Some very insightful and prescient lyrics.

@@steveullrich7737 dont forget in reality John was a middleclass (for liverpool) grammer school person, but really aimed revolution at those who wanted to destroy without finding a way to build everyone up. Townsend's lyrics are also mis scanned. "then I get down on my knees to pray we don't get fooled again". the prayer is for enlightenment , not reigned acceptance but the singing makes it deliberately ambigious

These guys are iconic. Pete Townsend on guitar, with the windmill stokes, the jumping like it’s an aerobics class. Keith Moon on the drums, that man was crazy, I don’t if it was the alcohol & chemical enhancements that did it, or just brought it out of him. Regardless, he is also legend. I remember my older brother playing The Who’s rock opera Tommy when I was 6 or7. Glad you enjoyed them.
I never saw a better band in concert than the Who.
Quality of this 44 year old video is amazing. Shepperton Studios is same place where Star Wars was filmed. The band had exclusive access to all their filming equipment to make this video.

Oh man!! I haven't listened to them recently. Check out : "Behind Blue Eyes." I saw them in Cleveland, Ohio (Ball Park stadium - can't remember the name) 1988ish. Live concerts in the open air are so great! Of course, they rocked!!
This is the iconic rock scream what's really amazing about this song is the organ is the instrument that's keeping the rhythm which allows the drummer Keith Moon, to go absolutely nuts throughout the whole song.
This band is on a whole different level. Can't wait until you react to more of them. But this is a banger. I think of this song after every election here in the states. Oh, the beginning of their song Baba O'Riley has been my phone ringtone for the past 10 years!
The Who's catalog is an irresistible rabbit hole of great music with great storytelling. As great as this performance was, you have to hear the studio version to really get the full effect ...especially for Roger Daltrey's classic scream. It's worth the listen.

This song was from a rock opera that Pete was working on that never came to fruition. He was a genius on many levels.

The Who is one of my very favorite bands of all time. They deliver the goods with each and every track they ever cut.
That was the kind and gentle WHO. Look at their earlier stuff, THE WHO, like Led Zeppelin, are the archetype ROCK BAND.

If you ever watched any CSI shows like CSI NY, the opening theme song is a Who song. Band members lead singer Roger Daltrey, drums Keith Moon, and Pete Townsend lead on guitar. But Pete also has done some solo work. John Entwistle is the bass guitarist.

The song is about an era that taken place around "The Glorious Revolution" and the change of their Constitution in 1707. It's a U.K. band.
I saw the band when 16 in Glasgow in 1971 when this song came out - 5,000 cinema venue cost of most expensive seats £1. Mind you we never used the seats other than to stand on. Relived the excitement through your reaction. Seen them several times since but feel the best work was mid-60s to mid-seventies. Not all as raucous as this - check out Tommy and Quadrophenia albums albums. Keep up the good work

Keith Moon and John Entwhistle were genius’ and their contrasting performances were so mesmerizing.
Love this group. It was a great time for music. CCR, The Who, The Clash, Dire Straits, Velvet Underground and then the Rolling Stones. Simply the best quality music
Roger Daltrey taped the cord on his mike so the mike wouldn't be launched and hit a fan in the crowd. He could swing it by the cord, then retract it back right in time for his vocals. It was an art form that he mastered. You always knew when the Who played their last song in a live concert, because their equipment was trashed by Pete Townshend (guitarist) & Keith Moon (drummer). Keith died in 1978, and the bassist, John Entwistle, died in 2002. Entwistle is among the greatest bass guitar players in rock history.

I have seen The Who in concert in 1970, 1980 and 2019. Won’t Get Fooled Again is my favorite Who song.
To me this could be the best introduction to The Who. This song originally came out in 1971 ( my birth-year) and I think it's one of their best songs and this performance is absolutely entertaining.
The Who were leaders in using lasers in shows, maybe even the first band to do so. What you saw here was ground-breaking.

The Who are one of the greatest and most iconic British rock bands who started out in the 60's along with the Beatles, Stones and Kinks. This is one of the greatest rock anthems with a timeless message - meet the new boss, same as the old boss! All four original members excel individually and together make a really special band. Pete Thownsend (lead guitar) is the main writer and a creative genius. I would love to see you react to more Who - Early stuff - 'my generation', 'the kids are alright', 'Substitute', later stuff - 'Behind blue eyes', 'Baba O'reilly', '5:15', 'love reign o'er me', 'Who are you' (used in CSI theme tune). I am 42 and remember the first time seeing Roger Daltry on TV, it wasn’t a music video but it was his guest starring acting role as “Fitz” the immortal friend of The Highlander, Duncan Macleod on the show Highlander.
The Who were definitely one of my favorite bands out of the 60s early 70s. They were some rough and tough dudes. I once heard that when you were going out with your girl you listened to Led Zeppelin and if you were going out to fight you listened to The Who lol

I'm loving your reaction to some of the best music of my era. This song was on the Who's Next album which came out in 1971. I saw them in concert at the Denver coliseum on December 4th of '71. You should listen to the entire album as it is one of the best all-time albums. A few of their songs off this album are currently being used for commercials.
