    What a great episode! She took a rather significant fall, and without a stunt double. These episodes give you so much in such a brief period of time. They’re well written, and the acting is excellent.

    Why would they only give people 10 minutes to evacuate?!
    "If I don't hear from you, I'll know you're alright." Really guy? What's wrong with those ignorant men? They knew she was crippled. Poor woman.
    This story was truly an example of how we are placed where God needs us to be at precise times for specific reasons. This case is nothing short of miraculous. God bless both souls. What an eerie story. I'm terrified of tidal waves. This is definitely in my top 5 favorite episodes.
    Thank you for sharing.

      They didn't have a coordinated system in place. It wasn't until after this disaster that powers to be organized themselves and established an international system.
      Also, "crippled" is a seriously dated expression to use for someone using a wheelchair.

No wheelchair ramp!!? Broken radio? What a thoughtless jerk! My husband wouldn't dream of leaving me alone like that! My goodness it will take me a while to calm down after this one...UGH.😱

    My husband moved to Hawaii in April 1960. His dad was in the marines. They took the boat over. So he was living there when this took place. As a young teen he started being interested in Ham Radio, so he knew Morse Code. His mom told me they always had to go to the highest point on the island when a tidal wave was expected. This is true. Later my son was stationed in Pearl Harbor.

    • @hebneh
      @hebneh 11 месяцев назад

      @@valmikabeneteau7229 Actually, there was absolutely no damage from this wave at all. It occurred soon after the tsunami that wiped out much of Hilo on May 23, 1960, because the immense quake in Chile that caused this previous disaster was just one of a whole series that went on for several days. A subsequent earthquake was thought to have caused another tsunami and the warning time was just minutes, so people were semi-panicked to escape since they knew that 61 people had been killed a short time before in Hilo. But fortunately, nothing happened.

      Mrs. North didn't think so, or God for that matter. How can you possibly know what the outcome would have been? That show wasn't too long after that tidal wave. When it aired, I'm sure it was still fresh in everybody's mind. They wouldn't have produced it if she was not in such a life threatening situation. I say your just a spoil sport. Please keep in mind that this incident happened 63 years ago - and the safety we have for handicapped people (like Ramos, etc.) wasn’t done then. Doesn’t make it right or wrong - so comparIng what we know and do now for handicapped people shouldn’t be measured against actions in a different time! Although most of us will not be around 63 years from now, I’m betting that people in the future will be saying some of the same things about 2023!

    This episode was based on a story by Bob Krauss in his column "In One Ear" published in the Honolulu Advertiser on May 27, 1960. The actual incident took place on May 25th. There were significant differences between the article and this program, however. 1) Mrs. North's home at 169 East Hind Drive was not in danger of being affected by a tsunami. 2) The real house does not have stairs in the front but is at ground level. 3) She did try calling the Honolulu Police Department but could not get through. 4) The old man, Thomas A. Powers, was truly deaf and knew nothing of the tsunami alert but did not "hear" her voice; the article said instead that he had "a strange compulsion to stop." 5) He was not "going to the beach" but was looking for a friend's house. 6) Nobody's lives were saved from this incident because the tsunami was only measured at several inches to 2 feet in height at different locations, so there never was any real threat.

      I was trying to cut a 13foot storm fallen tree out of my neighbors tree and yard one holiday monday in stormy winds alone with a handsaw that took me 9 or 10 hours all day. About Midafternoon my neighbors drove one town over and picked up tamales lunch out here in the Country and brought me a plate lunch wrapped in foil of 2 tamales and beans rice. Along came a big pitbull dashing past and entirely ignoring me. About 15-20 minutes later as I cut heavily back and forth at this trees branches, the pitbull came back and stood there next to me taking a moment as I worked, the seeming to be a presence there I thought was sweet and intetesting but wondered why, he left in a bit back the way he 1st came from, heading home I supposed. I kept cutting and in about 15 more minutes or so went to the front porch bench to have my lunch, and there was only tinfoil left. I realized possibly the dog had actually stopped in appreciation of my lunch to thank me, it felt like that too when I thought back a short bit before. I told my neighbors the silly occurrence and they drove back over a town away and got me another plate that tasted so good to me to be treated three times that day to random kindness. The 1st when the neighbors my tree fell on brought me lunch. The 2nd when the big pitbull dog stopped seemingly to me that he was thanking me and hung there beside me a bit real friendly. The 3rd when my neighbors again brought me readymade delicious lunch. Even a 4th possibly when I knew that dog had gotten a very nice lunch from my neighbors also that he seemed to thankful for. Odd occurrences in life also are about being kind to each other, even from an unknown pitbull.

A half an hour later I met a ranger. He said he had just seen the biggest mountain lion he had ever seen, up in a tree. I asked where, and it was almost exactly where I turned around. I was right about someone wanting to kill me, but it was an animal not a person.
