When I saw you just about losing it over the boy whose life Doss saved with his belt, I thought man this movie is going to destroy you. And I saw later I was almost right. But I'm glad to see you survived. Thanks for reacting to this one.
And as you say they did take a few liberties with this movie. But they did not overembellish trying to make him out as something he wasn't. You do not win Medals of Honor by being a fraud. And from my understanding after he finished praying there were no Americans who lost their lives in that final assault. A testimony to the power of faith, Doss in God, and the others in Doss.

My favorite story about Doss comes from interviews of that day… from Japanese survivors. They recount of a lone soldier that carried wounded to the edge of the ridge, standing clearly exposed as he lowered them down with all his strength, and every time they had a clear shot… their guns jammed.

The most overlooked thing in this movie was how his mother understood what the horror of World War I did to her husband. She defended him and she stood by him even when his anger turned toward. That kind of strength must have been passed to her son, Desmond.

In some significant ways, this excellent true story of Desmond Doss was toned down to make it more believable. However, there are some things that were changed that you might want to know about. Doss and his unit had actually taken part in two previous Pacific island invasions before they got to Okinawa, and Doss had actually been decorated with the Bronze Star for Valor in both, so Desmond was already a well respected member of the unit before Hacksaw Ridge. You can understand why they decided to compress the story entirely to the Okinawa campaign to keep the story easier to understand. Some of the other changes they made are also understandable, such as they amped up the drama of the trial a lot, and the situation where he leaves his wife at the altar while he sits in a cell is not quite the way that happened. Also, in reality Hacksaw Ridge was out of range of naval gunfire...the Japanese chose the location in part to be safe from the fire of the really big guns on the battleships.
The History vs Hollywood article on this movie is pretty good, and covers most the of the stuff that they changed or were mistaken about. I strongly recommend checking out History vs Hollywood for after you watch movies based on real history. They are usually the best place to get solid information about historical inaccuracies in a very easy to understand format, when they have an article posted about the film in question.✌✌

I think no filmmaker would have been better suited than Mel Gibson to film Desmond Doss' life, even though it shows a certain irony that a Catholic, of all people, publicized and thus honored the sheer superhuman achievements of a Seventh-day Adventist, while it also shows that denominations should not play an overriding role among Christians.

Such a terrific film about a truly amazing human being.
I’m not sure about my own accuracy, but I think the Sarge’s submachine gun was an anachronism. He has the M3 “Grease Gun” and that was normally only issued to tank and vehicle crews who needed something better than just a pistol in a smaller package than a full rifle or SMG. Typically he would have had the Thompson submachine gun which is what Tom Hanks carried in “Saving Private Ryan”.

    • @edm240b9
      @edm240b9 Год назад +2

Not true. By Okinawa, the Army had plenty of M3 Grease Guns to go around. Over 400,000 were made by the wars end and many regular infantry units carried Grease Guns as it had officially replaced the Thompson February of 1944. That said, the demand for SMGs was higher than the number of M3s available, so the Thompson continued to see usage until the end of the war. But, that doesn’t mean M3s wasn’t made available to the infantry guys. You will find plenty of pictures of infantryman armed with M3 Grease Guns that aren’t tankers even before Okinawa.
The Grease Gun replaced the Thompson for a number of reasons, the biggest one being cost. The Thompson was a ludicrously expensive gun to manufacture. Even the simplified M1A1 Thompson costs about $40, which still wasn’t enough. The Grease Gun was still significantly cheaper and easier to make in fast numbers.

With the tendency for the American army to over supply, it wouldn't surprise me that the Sargeant scrounged for the firearm on the way to Okinawa. However, don't know if getting ammunition for it would be an issue.

Andrew is one of those rare actors, like the ones from the Golden Age of cinema, shes like Bette Davis where you watch her perform, but you swear you're in the same room with her. And that's rare to find nowadays. My 1st Bette movie was "the private lives of elizabeth and essex" and she portrayed Queen Elizabeth I, but I felt like I time traveled and was in the room with the actual Elizabeth. She threw a chalice across the room and I swear I could feel the fear of her ladies in waiting and the sheer weight of the chalice. Her rage.

The man was an angel. Evidently, as the legend goes, a Japanese sniper caught Desmond silhouetted against the night sky. He took several shots but his very reliable rifle (Arisaka type 99) mysteriously "jammed" and/or misfired. After several attempts, the sniper concluded that this courageous American was protected by "Divine" forces and retreated from the scene. THat would have been a cool scene to re enact.

Horrifying to watch, yet knowing that man managed to save so many without becoming a casualty (even enemy lives; didn't matter for him) is nothing short of Biblical. This is one of my top ten favorites too. And it is this exact type of movie that I go to the theatre for (moving, often true stories that have the power to make me want to be a better person after I've seen them). For others like it (as powerful and moving, if not more) you owe it to yourself to check out ...
    Steven Spielberg's, AMISTAD,
    Edward Zwick's, GLORY,
    Ron Howard's, A BEAUTIFUL MIND,
    Kevin Costner's, DANCES WITH WOLVES,
    Oliver Stone's, JFK,
& Ron Howard's, CINDERELLA MAN as an honorable mention
Or if you are looking for something lighter, something as moving and powerful but with a comedic quality and not as intense there's ...
Francis Ford Coppola's, PEGGY SUE GOT MARRIED,
    Emerald Fennell's, PROMISING YOUNG WOMAN,
James L. Brooks', AS GOOD AS IT GETS,
Martin Brest's, SCENT OF A WOMAN,
Jonathan Dayton's and Valerie Faris's, LITTLE MISS SUNSHINE,
& Phil Alden Robinson's, FIELD OF DREAMS as an honorable mention
And you may recall I posted this list here a few days ago when I heard you were going to be reacting to this movie. So this is a reminder that most of these movies are being ignored by Patreon voters. But they definitely should not be. Every one is as good if not better than HACKSAW and it is hard to understand how they have become so forgotten. But now that you know I was right about HACKSAW, take a look at 1 or 2 on this list and see for yourself that I wasn't lying. Then check out the rest. After that you'll have seen all you'll ever need to see from the modern cinema to be inspired and you can move on to the earlier decades.

I didn't watch it, because I wasn't familiar with the movie. Actually I confused it with "Hamburger Hill," which was just blood and gore and the futility of war. Anyway, I just watched your reaction to this movie. Again, I haven't seen it before, but your editing and choice of scenes really told the incredible story of Desmond Doss, whom I had never heard of. But now I know who he was, thanks to you. I immediately went back and watched Cassie's reaction. You are both so talented and really share your emotions during the film. Thanks, my friend. Fun Fact: many movies like to edit in fake sniper crosshairs/reticles that aren’t accurate to the scopes on the real rifles. However, during the Japanese sniper scene where we see the POV through the scope, they actually shows the proper Japanese sniper reticle that was used during the war. When you look through a Japanese sniper, that’s what’s you’ll see (although there’s more detail in some of the scope reticles than others).

This movie actually had to tone down what he did so I thought it might interest you to know that Desmond Doss had tuberculosis at the time of hacksaw ridge so he had to stiffle his coughing so as not to give away his location while finding injured soldiers and saving them, he lost a lung to it. This story told in the movie is just the tip of the iceberg with this man and his heroics as he was actually saving men at one of the bases they were at as people were dying from heat stroke, dehydration etc. Also Doss was already a seasoned soldier by the time of hacksaw ridge as he had already seen seen combat as was in two other battles in Guam and the phillipines for which he was twice decorated with the bronze star. So really the number of men he saved is around 250 if not more but him being so humble he didnt want that recognition. As the number from the ridge is a disputed number as other men say on record it was over hundred doss said no more than 50 please but they compromised at 75 instead. For more information on this incredible man i suggest a documentary called The Consciousness Objector which has his sister, brother and brothers in arms in. Its fantastic and gives you so much more and the interviews at the end are from that documentary as that doc inspired this movie. Mel Gibson said if he had put it all in nobody would believe a single word of any of it as it was just miracle after miracle . Bullets seemed not to hit him enemy guns jammed when trying to shoot him. Its wild. Be a good person just like him. His story is still taught to recruits to this day to show what one man is capable of if he truly believes that he can. There was a celebration of his life just last year in varios bases. There is his local school named after him and a hospital in Hawaii too. Beautiful human being. ❤

Early in the film, you remarked that it was beginning with a love story. Actually, the whole movie consists of intertwined love stories: the love between Desmond and Dorothy; Desmond’s love of God; and Desmond’s love of others, even those who beat him, as he was prepared to lay down his life for them (John 15:13). He was NOT running on pure adrenaline. Remember the opening scene in which he quotes Isaiah 40:28-31.

I love this story and movie so much. As much as I admire Desmond Doss's heroics on the battlefield I respect him even more for having the courage to stand by his convictions no matter the cost. I'm raising 3 teenage boys and there are only two things I've said 100 times since they were little. 1) You're going to make mistakes. I'm grown and I make mistakes every day. You must OWN them and LEARN from them. Until you stop blaming everyone else for your mistakes you're doomed to repeat them. And 2) When you're faced with a difficult decision, the right thing to do is almost always the hardest thing to do. Both of those principles are sooo tough to live by, but Desmond Doss upheld them to the highest standard. I believe God works powerfully through people with that level of character and integrity.

Bearing was a hard part for me in boot too. I couldn't help but smile or laugh, as I'm mostly Italian lol. There were times that they were trying to get us to laugh, and it was alright, cause we all need a little levity and you get that in the field with your men, but lose your bearing at the wrong time and oh boy. Screaming about how this was serious, you would get yourself and your friends killed, how you're the stupidest recruit to ever be, and maybe some IT (incentive training, more like intensive training) or an example made of you in some way.
But I'll never forget when we were practicing drill, and our drill head said "no diddies this time, and anyone that sings a diddy, I'll punch them in the face" 🤣 Anyway, Martinez accidentally starts singing the diddy within the first couple movements, and our DI screamed bloody murder in the funniest way lmao she told her to get up there to the front. Martinez approaches with her rifle 🤣 cause you know, drill practice. And the DI, a very expressive black woman, just raises her eyebrows to the point everyone could see and points for her to hang it on a rack post (we were in the squadbay because of weather) 🤣 Martinez then had to hang her rifle up and walk into DI's outstretched fist in front of all of us, and we absolutely lost it. She ever had to coax Martinez to keep coming. Even DI couldn't keep her bearing, and they often only lose it around other DIs/Marines a few steps from recruits. This was the first time we ever saw that woman's face look normal. It was great. She let us laugh a few seconds and then just did an "alright, back to it" kind of saying. Felt like one of those situations where you and a guardian/parent have a blast, but before they take you back to your other guardians/parents, you get that "don't tell your mom" warning lmao

Yes. Say what you want about Mr. Mel Gibson - but he is the best actor that turned director that I know of. Very powerful movie. Also Teresa Palmer (the nurse/wife), her performance is very underrated, since the focus is elsewhere, but seeing this again, I noticed how good she is.

The Japanese were medieval (like actually), bloodthirsty fanatics (no really) who delighted in the suffering and anguished screams of their enemies (no cap).
Okinawa was just a taste of what a full-blown invasion of the Japanese home islands would be. The population of Japan (civilian or military) would have fought and died to the very last man, woman, and even child - making it, in the most dire and serious of terms, absolutely necessary to drop as many nuclear bombs as needed for unconditional surrender.
Such was the unfortunate circumstance the Japanese so recklessly threw themselves into.

I can’t say concretely. Only I haven’t found anything suggesting that, and he didn’t appear paralyzed in the interview footage at the end of the film. Perhaps someone else will have more information.

I’m not, I watched it when it first came out and didn’t even think about doing a reaction to it. I’m starting to experiment with collaborators, so maybe in the future with someone who hasn’t seen it.

Good movie Not truly 100% accurate story as if it was it be really boring if was a true to life at most of the film, the Battle is the only thing making it move, Desmond Doss was a Great war "Medic" as that's all he was, but Nothing compared to "Audie Murphy" which has the Highest Rank ever in Military History at the age of 17yrs old with 22 Medals and 2 Medal of Honors 2 Purplehearts after fighting in more than 9 Tours of frontline attacks and unarmed fights in the Worse war in WW2 the Battle of the Bulge, MAJOR Audie Murphy

There are other movies based on real events and people you need to see. I would recommend, unbroken 2014 and midway 2019, many of the events in those movies were real, even if they look impossible to survive.

Here is some Good News that is worth eternal life for all people. Romans 5:8-11
"But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. Much more then, being now justified by his blood, we shall be saved from wrath through him. For if, when we were enemies, we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, being reconciled, we shall be saved by his life; and not only so, but we also rejoice in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received the reconciliation."
    Mark 1:15
“The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand. Repent, and believe in the gospel.” 🙏
What is the Gospel? Read 1 Corinthians 15:1-4. John 3:16-17. You can read it online if you don't have a Bible.
