What I loved about The Damned is that they never took themselves too seriously and made consistently great songs and albums, unlike other punk bands. Love em
Wow, I actually found a Damned video that I've never seen!! This isn't what I was expecting, but it was funny :) One thing (of many things) that I love about The Damned is taht they don't seem to take themselves too seriously, have a quirky sense of humor, & seem to have fun in their videos. It's really too bad they're so overlooked in general, but more reason for me to love them!!!
They weren't overlooked in their home country; far from it. They just weren't ever huge here in America, but a lot of my friends were familiar with them.
@@wickedlee664I'm in the states & have loved this band since 2001 - thanks, Napster! Trust me, hardly anyone that I talk to except those of us more in alternative/goth bands has heard of them here in the states. It sounds like they didn't sell themselves out to the American market (from what they said on their documentary), which is probably for the best.
I first saw this video in like 2008 or 09 and tried ever since to find it again. My loved ones looked at me like I was crazy when I described it... But finally I found it 🙂🤣
Had the chorus part of it on a cassette tape, recorded off the radio back in the late 80s. Helped keep certain songs on my radar when I didn't have the disposable cash to buy any of them. I definitely bought Grimly Fiendish on 7" a couple of years before this.
Thanks! I saw this video years ago but I think that version was taken down, and I forgot the title of the song and couldn't find it again for ages. What a relief I finally remembered! I love this video. I wish I knew who did the costume design.
I first got to hear the them, rather than hear their name or about them or see their name graffittid round the place,in 1979,and considered myself a late-comer.
Gigolo aunt. it doesn't sound that similar but in syd's song the lyrics for the chorus are: 'Cause I know what you are You are a gigolo aunt, you're a gigolo aunt! And here they are: You know what I ain't You know what I ain't I ain't no gigolo aunt Read more: The Damned - Gigolo Lyrics | MetroLyrics
Give the Barrett song a listen. ruclips.net/video/8cIgt5CUZMI/видео.html The Damned incorporated the hook. I do believe They wanted Syd to help them with Music For Pleasure, but they got landed with the eminently more serious David Gilmour instead. The first few seconds of the first song on that album sound enticingly like the intro to Interstellar Overdrive.
Got a lot of love for this though its arguably the odd duck of all their output. Like a totally different band but is great fun to watch and not a bad track to earhole.
this is mostly borrowed from syd barret but there's also a bit of robyn hitchcock and the egyptians "my wife and my dead wife" in there too. probably other stuff too.
Don't know that anyone really knows. This is Syd Barrett we're talking about. The song holds one key resemblance - the chorus is a faster version of Barrett's only in the negative.
Gigolo Aunt -A Girl who is usually very cute and pretty that seduces men makes them madly fall in love with her using her specific ways but unlike a male gigolo she's not interested in money but only the pleasure of capturing and breaking their heart.
Love this! Aint it funny looking @ it now??? Circa 1985!........The Damneds songs and videos! Especially this one!.......I think Tim Burton must be a fan???
I get it. I'm not trying to insult you. I just think it's dumb that people keep incorrectly naming the year that the song came out, just because it was reissued later as a single. Not a big deal.
Check out Siouxsie and the Banshee,Echo and the Bunnymen,Smiths,Cure, Some of the greatest goth bands of our Generation. Inc This great band. Love this song and wore the album out in the 80's
I can understand why many fans of The Damned don't like this song, it's obviously not a punk track, nor does it have the goth pomp of Phantasmagoria. I came across this track pretty recently, never heard anything off this album. Anyway, didn't realise this was the Damned at all, and thought it was a pretty catchy late 80s college rock song. I guess if you go in blind not knowing who it is, the song is better than it's given credit for. Going to check out the album, as I hadn't really wanted to hear it and just assumed it was crap due to word of mouth.
I have since purchased a copy of and listened to Anything. It's actualy a pretty okay album. I enjoyed the tracks Anything , Tightrope Walk and the cover of Alone Again Or.
I bought this album 25 yrs ago, but after all this time somebody please tell me WTF a "gigolo aunt" is?!?! (Apart from the title of a Syd Barrett tune, where bears no resemblance to this one whatsoever.) TIA
Love The Damned but never particularly liked the Anything lp,the only track I liked on it was Pschomania,MCA ruined the Damned glad they are back on form again,RIP Brynn Merrick.
This is why nobody ever heard of the Damned. You have a dark name like the Damned, think you're vampires, and then do silly little schlocky shit like this. Where are more songs in the vein of Shadow of Love? That's what they should have been doing.
"cult following" is another way of saying "nobody ever heard of them." Obviously I've heard of them, some years ago, and have come to appreciate a few of their songs, but only just recently. But I know people who are punk enthusiasts who have never heard of them.
@@thomaswebb248 they're obviously not punk enthusiasts then...maybe Green Days more their speed. The Damned are one of the most important bands of the British punk movement
@@thomaswebb248 Do your homework, don't be so self-satisfied with being ignorant. There is no way one can be a "punk enthusiast" and have never heard of the Damned - whether they like the band or not- they released the first punk single; it is a non-sense. Unless they are so-called punk enthusiasts and don't know shit about their 101 Punk history. I don't even like the Clash yet I acknowledge their importance in punk history. Don't assume that because YOU don't know about them (or the people you mention) that it is a fact. Hello, they filled Royal Albert Hall in 2016.

Love the Syd Barrett connection. Totally brilliant
seeing dave vanian in full vampire garb covered in stuffed animals gave me whiplash, but in the best way possible.
Vampire garb? He is wearing a graduation cap and gown for pete's sake
What a gorgeous lad

Me at the end of the video: "Wow, he is so pretty with moustache!"

He's pretty all the time! *swoooooon!* 😉😉😉😍

Great 70's punk band to great 80's pop band.
I love this era. Very lush and dark. This is when I got turned on to them. Early stuff freaking rocks too.
I first got to hear the them, rather than hear their name or about them or see their name graffittid round the place,in 1979,and considered myself a late-comer.
I love any tribute to Robyn Hitchcock. This is great.
It’s obv Syd’s song, but the bridge shows it’s actually an RH tribute.
From 1987.
This Song is a Adaption from a Syd Barrett Song.

Anything is a very good Damned album. How come it didn't achieve the same kind of success Phantasmagoria did ,
Most young damned fans were goths at the time, so wouldn't touch this with a barge pole! Good in retrospect though...
Thank you! Anything has long been my 2nd fave Damned album, right after Phantasmagoria. But it gets a lotta hate.

It's funny how non-vampire, facial hair sporting Dave looks a lot like Vinny from Vinesauce.
Why does everybody on the net keep saying this song is from 1987?? It's off of "Anything", which was released in 1986. Look it up, people.
