The Truth About Mountain Top Roll Cover for Ford Ranger

  • 🛻🛻A review and Maintenance Overview of the Mountain Top Roll Cover. When I started this video, it was to slate this Mountain Top Roll Top on my Ford Ranger Wildtrak. I then looked into what I could do to stop it filling with water and creating a tsunami wave every time I rolled back the top after it had rained. It's a long video but use it to skip through for what you need. It shows the pitfalls of owning this top and also what you need to do to keep on top of it. Personally, I think if you have to do this much maintenance then the design is wrong but hey, it looks good....
    And to top it off, two of the screws have come loose and gone missing, but easy enough to order online as a pack of 6 washers, covers and screws...

    This is a video on the importance of servicing. You did a great job servicing the rolltop in the end. I will buy one after watching your video. Thanks.
    To be fair to you. If there was shavings in your drain tubes, from the install from Ford. That's pretty bad on their part. How you're parking your Ranger is also playing a big part in the issues you're having. If you reversed into that parking space. All water would drain away from the canister, not into it. Better yet. If you organised your garage and made space for the Ranger. You would have to service it way less also. As most leaves and debris would be avoided.

    I've just cleaned out my drain pipes from my MTR canister. These drains are a redesign by my local Mazda dealer about 3 years ago but still block up. I have pushed a 1.6mm trimmer line into the tube and they now drain, when I fill the canister with water. The 1.6mm lines should vibrate as I drive and keep the drains clear. Additionally they act as 'wicks' to assist drainage when the water level is low.

      Have a look at the drains on the newer mountain tops, they may have improved them. However, you really need to keep up maintenance on the roll track as well. Not good all round I suppose unfortunately. Thanks for the message anyway 👍🏻😁

    Look on the black drain hoses as mine was going up hill so I drilled lower holes in the tub liner and pushed the pipes back in ,also make sure your running tracks are spaced right as this jams the roller and the rubber seals will be loose ,I had to adjust mine and the gave them a spray with silicone spray ,I get about a cup of water in now ,its 90% better

    The UK is one of the few countries where Ford doesn't fit the roller shutter as standard straight out of the factory. I believe that this is to do with the UKs BIK commercial vehicle tax concessions not being met if the roller is fitted as standard as this pulls the payload under the magic 1000kg threshold. As such, Ford deliberately don't fit the rear tailgate seals in order to allow any water in the rear tub to drain out much easier. However, once a roller shutter is then fitted as an accessory at a later date or even at the dealership from new, they have to also fit the rear tailgate seal which attaches to an original Ford load liner. Unfortunately, very few UK Wildtraks have the rubber tailgate seals fitted which therefore allows water to enter the rear tub around the tailgate, certainly if parked on a downward incline. As can be seen in the video, this one certainly doesn't have the tailgate seals fitted which is also shown by how much water flows back out from around the tailgate. I would be taking it back to the Ford dealership and asking why the rubber tailgate seals weren't fitted when the roller was fitted as an accessory which is contrary to those Wildtraks which leave the factory with a Roller shutter fitted as standard. Check out this ford video showing the tailgate seal. ruclips.net/video/t_5UiYGvbmQ/видео.html

    We have had our Ranger for 3 years now and it is 6 years old in total. Mountain Top has always leaked a bit but keep the drains clear and it in not too bad. Plastic boxes are great and park on a slope to keep the boot draining. BUT BUT BUT wait until the silly thin NON stainless steel cables that activate the locking mechanism in the rear beam fail. THERE APPEARS TO BE NO WAY TO REPLACE THE CABLES WITHOUT REMOVING THE ENTIRE MOUNTAIN TOP ROLLER SHUTTER FROM THE VEHICLE. This really is a game changer. If anyone does know a short cut please enlighten me! Cheers And Merry Xmas.

The runner drain tubes are just so small they get blocked all the time. Honestly I think someone from Ford/Mountain Top incorrectly fitted it. I’ve had mine through heavy rain, floods, high pressure washes and guaranty not more than a shot glass of water seeps in. Due dry lube not grease as it’ll increase buildup of gunk. I haven’t need any maintenance for the past 3yrs, only dry lubed it once recently. Runs like butter. I think Ford/ Mountain Top should be responsible. We in Australia have these type of trucks with Mountain Top roller covers everywhere. Unlucky.

    First off these trucks are lifted higher in rear than front,water will accumulate in the front of the bed,putting drain holes might help but then you need in front and back also draining to the bed will lead to rusting of bed so you would have to drill holed through the metal bed so water drains to ground not into the bed,no need to rust out the bed,lol. Best not to buy this roll up units, netter to get a good sealing TOPUP UNIT,LOL,SAVE A LOT OF HEART ACHE AND WASTE OF MONEY LATER,LOL

  • @Crsf84

    We have several rangers used for work, The best thing to do is take off and fit tiger seal all around the top. We have been there many times and the key thing to remember ford employees are fitters not mechanics or problem solvers. The mountain tops are good when fitted correctly. I would put more money on incompetent people initially than a poor quality mountain top. there should be drains fitted to the back of the unit.

      Also I notice your trucks fairly green . Might be to do with where you leave it or how often you clean it . I personally do not maintain mine and have used them for 8-9 years with no issues apart from poor fitting when new .

    • @CloughReviews
      @CloughReviews  3 года назад

      I think the problem is more with the drains that come as standard for the roller shutter tank. The tank gets full of water and that then sloshes into the truck bed. When I've taken off the rubber drain pipes from the tank, one end is so thin that any debris that gets into the tank when the shutter goes back into it, just block the tubes straight away. Somebody was saying that they have made these bigger now but I don't know. I have to clean them out regularly but they are so difficult to get to and remove each time unfortunately..... Thanks for the feedback though 👍

    Makes no sense to say it’s a poor cover system when you did the first maintenance on the roll top and never did it before. It’s like saying the engine is crap when doing the first oil change in 150k miles. Online you can get the maintenance steps for it in the first place. You also have to grease on specific points in regular bases like you have to clean the roll box and free up the drains(also the drain in the back)

    • @CloughReviews
      @CloughReviews  Год назад +1

      No, not at all. The main complaint on the video is the utterly ridiculous size of the container drainage tubes. They are so narrow, that there is no way they are not going to get blocked. I'm not talking leaves and twigs, but the smallest of debris blocks them completely unfit for purpose. It is a basic design fault, nothing to do with maintenance. I get that you have to grease tracks and clean everything, but to have to remove the drain tubes, clean and replace then on a continual basis because they are far too narrow is ridiculous.

      Just a couple of points:
      Have a look around for videos that show just how secure it is....
      This isn't about it not being waterproof, it's about a ridiculous design of the size (and tapering) of the rubber drain tubes on this model to allow the emptying of the roll top box
      This is a design flaw (I believe it may have been changed on newer models, which proves a point) and no matter how much you may like it or the company, it's a pretty bad design.......

      @@CloughReviews I feel the need to defend it as much as you feel the need to make a video that attacks it - despite it not being marketed to do what you purport it should do...weatherproof does not mean waterproof - weatherproof literally means to withstand weather without damage or loss of function - its only function is to be a roll cover - which seemingly it does very well for you...what you just described as weather proof meaning is completely wrong...you just explained water proof...if you purchased the product thinking it would keep water out of your tub then more fool you...educate yourself before you attempt to educate others...

      I do struggle to say anything in it's defence though, It isn't secure (see the other RUclips vids), water actually drips onto everything not just overflows from the recoil tray, and to to it off, it really doesn't take long for the tracks to make it grind to a halt and need relubing. .....

      @@CloughReviews the points you all seem to be missing.......weatherproof does not mean water proof. It runs through aluminium channel that is a clearance fit (otherwise it wouldn't slide ) so ofcoarse it will leak water. And the main thing that nobody else seemed to notice is that you are parking facing down hill and on a sideways slope, so its to be expected that the water wont run off evenly and will cause the puddles you showed. This is so painfully obvious to me. I think you are expecting too much from this roller lid. A hard cover with a rubber seal is the only method to making it waterproof. No roller lid is going to stop water as they all need clearance in the track to be able to operate. No offense meant here, just pointing out the obvious that everyone else seemed to overlook.

    My advice would be is to take it to Mountain Top Cover approved installer and have them check it out it is not meant to be that bad!! It could well be a lack of maintenance on your part!! If you are parking this vehicle close to or under a tree then blame yourself it is more your lack of maintenance!!

  • @HansTrein
    @HansTrein 3 года назад

    You are meant to clean it regularly, yourself not the guy at the car wash! And use silicone and not WD 40, definitely parking outside will be an issue. I would recommend a rubber mat rather than carpet too. They sell endoscope cameras that plug tonyour phone for under £10 so you could in theory inspect areas outside your reach with that, comes with leds lights too. Good that you made a video about it. But I would rather become more used to cleaning it before showing a tutorial... In fact there's an official Ford video on the Wildtrak roller shutter's owner maintenance from Ford in NZ, check it out on RUclips.
