His lyrics about "brain was enflamed the fatigue was crushing, hard to remain sane when your brain's combusting" hits hard, because he's talking about encephalopathy. We didn't know but for the last 18mo before my father passed, he had developed hepatic encephalopathy. He was erratic and apparently sent my sister a very hurtful letter despite my knowledge of how much he missed her and how he didn't want to die for the first time in 30 years because she gave him grandchildren. It was like we lost him before he died.
The elastic band line hit me particularly hard because I interpreted it as the self harm treatment psychologists recommend; basically you snap an elastic band on your wrist to replace the desired pain of cutting. Honestly he's one of those artists that makes every line count, there are countless lyrics of his that I constantly think about and it's easy to see why. Man's a genius.
He has the gift of making his songs relatable on so many levels, making it specific and evocative while still being open to interpretation. He often says he doesnt over explain his lyrics so people can put their own interpretation and apply it to his music.
This is why I love his live acoustics: completely raw emotions with complete control on both the instrument and the vocal. The synergy of that contrast just kills me for some odd reason...
Sting once said that one thing he's always done right is consistently surround himself with and work with the best available talent. He said it in a somewhat self deprecating manner, but he definitely has always had a knack for putting together the right group of people to take a seed of an idea and see it to artistic fruition. I feel like Ren has got that same knack. And here in the 2020s with an independent artist who has to understand platforms like youtube and how to harness the visual elements and the ways that marketing and music criticism have changed too, beyond "just" the writing and the playing and the recording/production - Ren and his team have done so much powerful work on such a shoestring budget. As a team, they are just so incredibly good at using whatever "natural resources" are available to do storytelling that is so powerful visually, sonically, and lyrically, whether live or on wax. And talk about the role of youtube - masterful. He saw the importance of reactors and - so critical for a lyricist like Ren - he ended up developing a great working relationship with the goat of the youtube breakdown format (that's you, Knox). Maybe Ren finds the best talent or maybe those people are drawn to him or maybe it's a combo of things, but i am so impressed, over and over again, and i can't help but be reminded a little of Sting and his dexterity and adaptability and fearlessness and acumen and how he ends up with the absolute best personnel for the project. (And the playing - y'all ever tried to sing and play a rhythm instrument at the same time? 😅 Not easy. Just the skill and practice that have gone into Ren's ability to play this stuff at all and never mind perform it live is just ❤. Actually that's another thing he has in common with Sting come to think of it...)

Just like each person has their own breaking point but each person (especially those who are susceptible to it like those with mental health issues) has a breaking point different each time. 1 day you can manage things that the next day you can't. That's OK cause you did your best. If you can say you did your 100% it doesn't matter if your 100% is another person's or another days 20%. In your situation at that time your 100% is as much as you can give and that's OK. Trust me when I say it's NOT easy to go easy on yourself especially when you don't understand what is going on but if you can do that it can help you.

Ren said carving a hole in his chest. Ren did it after so many times finding no answers from numerous doctors, his body was dying and his mind snapped into full blown psychosis after he became allergic to the latest fecal cell transplant treatment. An old tv he smashed apart and grabbed thick glass the size of a knife and stabbed himself than dragged it across his chest. He could not tell what was real anymore and wanted the pain to see if he could feel it. Chapter 4 or 5 of his life story.
