Tesla's Full Self-Driving approval in China is a 'trophy-case win,' Wedbush's Dan Ives says

- Tesla (TSLA) CEO Elon Musk returned from a trip to China with a deal allowing the company to implement its "Full Self-Driving" (FSD) technology in the country. After the announcement, the company's shares began to rebound from recent lows.
Wedbush Managing Director and Senior Equity Analyst Dan Ives joins Market Domination to discuss Musk's recent trip to China and the impact it will have on the company moving forward.
Ives outlines Tesla's key victories in China: "If you look what Musk has been able to do, remember years ago they say he would never be able to build a factory in China now look at GIga. The point is they need Tesla as much as Tesla needs China because it's the trophy case. You look at Apple (AAPL), you look at Tesla, two of the best brands in the world, that's why they allow this. With Baidu as a partner. And the reason it's so important is that Tesla almost had one hand behind its back not having FSD in China, now they have that. And I believe what is starting to get factored in here is the demand. I'm not saying the next week or two, but demand recovery in China. But betting against Musk, it's like betting against Brunson in the playoffs. "

Previously, its unmanned vehicles could only operate from 9 am to 5 pm in the city.
The updated scheme is expected to cover one million customers in certain areas of Wuhan, a city of more than 10 million people.
Like most autonomous vehicle startups, Baidu combines a mix of third-party cameras, radar and lidar to help its cars see better in low-visibility conditions, in contrast to Tesla’s vision-based solution.
In August, Baidu started offering fully driverless robotaxi rides, charging passengers at taxi rates.
In Q3, Apollo Go, the firm’s robotaxi hailing app, completed more than 474,000 rides, up 311% year over year.
Accumulatively, Apollo Go had exceeded 1.4 million orders as of Q3.

Geez, the woman with the glasses is clueless on Tesla FSD. No other autonomous software such as in BYD, doesn’t compare. BYD software only compares to Tesla Autopilot.
BYD is not the only chinese player in FSD, there are BeiDou, DJI, Huawei, and others. Tesla FSD allowed so those companies know what to aim: better than Tesla's. that's why giga factory allowed before with so many subsidy and exemption.

I do not believe that any other company in China is anywhere near autonomous like Tesla. FSD is the only player…
There’re already many driverless taxis in many cities in China, FSD still need someone behind the wheel monitoring.
Tesla has been promising robo taxis that should be better because they do not need geofencing and remote monitoring. But that’s still not possible, and may not happen anytime soon or ever.
In fact, Huawei's autonomous driving has far surpassed Tesla's FSD, allowing people to get off at the entrance of shopping malls, and then automatically search for parking spaces in underground parking lots and park them. After shopping, use your phone to make the car move to the location you need and get in the car. It's all automatic, it's amazing.

So we went from level 2 FSD to an improved level 2 FSD,,, still supervised. Why is this so exciting? I have a Tesla model 3 and have zero interest in level 2 or being an unpaid supervisor which really offers no substantive value. If it's full autonomy at level 5 than that would be something to celebrate. This excitement is false hype unless it's full autonomy level 5 as initially promised I'm unimpressed. I don't need it nor want it if it's still me supervising level 2.

FSD supervised level 2. Can't get excited about that. When a Tesla drives autonomously from from LA to New York at level 5 I'll be interested. Until then ho-hum. Was not a long awaited actually. It happened quite easily. There will be more countries wanting FSD. It will be and Should be in every car.
Kudos on China as they want to innovate. Again, let me be clear, FSD will be in every car. Rightfully so.
The biggest Chinese car maker, BYD, announced sometime in the last year that it had given up trying to solve full self driving because it was so hard. And even if they decide to copy Tesla's path with an end to end vision based system, they don't have the data nor the compute power. They are already at 5 years behind Tesla and they will always be behind.
And let's not forget that Tesla's Model Y is still the best selling car in China, and the rest of the world too.

People concerned about FSD being “cancelled” because of a high profile crash should look no further than the aviation industry. Autopilot is the norm in airliners.
The difference is that pilots generally take over when they enter high traffic areas with low separation. Not a good analogy.

The majority of robotaxi car sales will go to manufacturers with battery swap capability. Who's gunna charge robotaxi? As far as components. Tesla will be paying to use other software costing Tesla more money. Sounds like a pumping! How long before the rug is pulled from Tesla?

Most of Tesla's FSD IP is in its collected data (most of which will be in the USA) and its AI training technology. None of this is in the cars. It would be like trying to reverse engineer a whole machine gun when you only have the bullets to work from.
It's a big issue when Tesla FSD doesn't rely on lidar, they are using inferior tech to makers like Li Auto, XPeng, and NIO. This might be an issue in the future when Tesla's tech causes problems.

Starting this week, the public can ride its robotaxis in Wuhan between 7 am and 11 pm without safety drivers behind the wheel.
Previously, its unmanned vehicles could only operate from 9 am to 5 pm in the city.
The updated scheme is expected to cover one million customers in certain areas of Wuhan, a city of more than 10 million people.
Like most autonomous vehicle startups, Baidu combines a mix of third-party cameras, radar and lidar to help its cars see better in low-visibility conditions, in contrast to Tesla’s vision-based solution.
In August, Baidu started offering fully driverless robotaxi rides, charging passengers at taxi rates.
In Q3, Apollo Go, the firm’s robotaxi hailing app, completed more than 474,000 rides, up 311% year over year.
Accumulatively, Apollo Go had exceeded 1.4 million orders as of Q3.

wait, "already" approved??? I think they'd just given Tesla access to Baidu map. (which is strange, Baidu map is a open platform anyone can use, why need special permission?) Don't they need to pass some testing to be allowed self-driving system to be operated? It just doesn't matter sense anyone can freely run driverless car on road. @1voluntaryist I agree with you. Do folks really think China has not done their homework? They are committed to dominating all aspects of the EV market. Tesla came into China as #1 in the EV maker and now Tesla is #2. The US doesn't even have a close #2 to Tesla in our EV market.
The only missing part for China now is autonomous driving and China sees Tesla at the forefront of this technology. They have quietly watched Tesla refine FSD and they also see the lack of US government support for Telsa. This may give them the opportunity to permanently leap frog the US in the EV space.
China will add government assistance allowing Tesla to work with their road safety division to fast track and perfect FSD in China and thereby completely cement China's lead in all aspects of the EV market (car - battery - autonomy). Eventually, their EV auto-makers will again learn from Tesla and may someday also lead Tesla in vehicle autonomy space as well.
If the US does not wake up and compete, most of us will be driven by Chinese electric vehicles by 2040.

The number of vehicle death in China and India are so high, they really need a functioning autonomous driving software like fsd. And no, all the other Chinese ones do not even use neural net yet, and only a few uses vision. Those with lidar will never succeed due to cost and lack of lidar components to car ratio.
