    So great...
    I just found a 2017 with only 12,000 miles on it... A true garage queen. I have owned several type bikes and dreamed about a GS for about 8 years... Can't afford a new one at this time but geez a GS with low milage is a dream come true... I can't wait to get it...
    Great video. Thanks.

      John Shelton Excellent John my bike is a 2017 and I have no thoughts on selling it at all. It puts a big smile on my face every time I ride it. I tried the 1250 and couldn’t feel any difference between them. You will enjoy it let me know how you get on.👍

    I was nervous when I picked mine up from BMW. I have never ridden a motor bike before and took some lessons. I passed my test in February. Order the bike in March and picked it up in May. First ever bike... R1200GS Adventure Triple Black.

      Alan Bell Excellent mate. I was so nervous because of the fear about dropping it. I have had loads of bikes before and I seem to be like that on collection day. I hope you are enjoying that bike. I can have a stressful day and having a ride out after seems to make me completely relaxed about everything. Looking forward to next summer and some real trips👍

      Clark Kent it probably is but so what. I had it since May and just come back from a 1000 mile trip around Scotland riding on all types of roads and in all types of weather, from 21 degrees and blue sky’s on the West Coast to 50 mile an hour wind and rain on the East Coast and loved it. Not sure if I would of any any other bike.

    Congrats on your new bike mate! I dreamed about owning this bike since I was 10 years old finally picked up the 2016 Triple Black R1200 GS. Money has nothing to do with this bike, money comes and goes and this is a dream come true. You were spot on with your excitement about all the absolutely incredible features. The bike is effortless and is a torque monster when needed....hundreds of miles later still comfortable with all the safety features. GREAT VID! welcome to the BMW GS family!

    My dream bike as well. Such a cool machine. The looks, the engine, the riding position and confort, the overall quaity... It's all great. I drove a gsa as a replacement bike when the clutch on my small f700 went bust. Ride it and enjoy it in good health. Like you said, we only live once.

We're able to pack all our gear with ease. Did purchase pannier bags from Amazon vice BM as cheaper but well made. Great vid. Looking forward to part 2!

We can ether sit at home watching TV or we can be out there getting a little adventure. We males need it for good health. Let me know how you get on when you get one. I think people are craving exploring these days bikes tours are now all booked up each year. Not that I would join a tour group I am to unsociable. Good luck with yours

    I bought the same bike in July. Immediately rode it for a 3,500 mile trip into Canada. All thumbs up. Superb quality and comfort. Cruise control was great on long stretches of road. Fuel range is fantastic. Power is excellent. Shift assist is fun, fun, fun. To me, it sounds like an F1 car shifting gears. It's my 7th GS, 3rd Adventure. I will hang on to this one for a long time. Wife likes the back seat, too!

    Love your story mate... One day. . . I had exactly the same when I saw a Harley Davidson like 10 years ago. That was actually a Night Rod and I've last year purchased me a Street Glide Special.
    But now... I've had the pleasure of swopping bikes for half an hour during our road trip in the German mountains, with a mate who owns a 2016 GSA... I've fallen head over heels in love with this machine! Looking to get myself a 2018 or maybe a '19 1250Gs. Beautiful bike you have!

    Totally awesome Buddy !
    Thanks so much for your encouragement - I totally agree with your comments. Ride position / road presence / shaft drive / smooth ride - all superb.
    I just purchased a BMW R1200 GS Rallye 2017 - these machines are highly highly engineered to every detail (I'm an engineer myself). Super high quality. I've owned mostly Ducati's - which are also very nice machines - and I'm enjoying my BMW for touring and off road / mountain rides here in Mexico.
    Nav 6 is great too so I don't have to fumble with my phone all the time.
    GS Exhaust note is a little quiet for me - I need everyone to hear me loud & clear - drivers in Mexico not so good.
    I have hard panniers too - but thinking about soft ones for more flexibility.
    Have fun !!

    This is an absolutely wonderful review for the riding experience of the BMW R1200GS. I ride a 2003 BMW R1150GS Adventure. Unlike the newer R1200GS, I can fix most things on it with a wrench, not a computer. Sometimes, depending on the circumstances, older is better. With either bike, you get top quality and an above average ride on a BMW. If you spend the huge pile of money for one of these, you better USE it... a LOT. Ride it for tens or hundreds of thousands of miles and maintain it. Travel across Europe, Asia, Africa or the Americas, go places and make memories. Otherwise you're wasting your money using it as just a commuter. They are far too expensive to be used as a garage ornament.

  • @wackedoutdude
    @wackedoutdude 6 лет назад

    You are right the fuel range is a massive plus point. Bmw gsa's do not ride like a heavy bikes they are so well balanced. At slow speed they are a joy. I bought a new 2017 gsa and hated it i only kept it 3 months. I sold it to my brother. Then i borrowed it back and realised i'd made a massive mistake. Truly amazing bikes they handle great to.I got mine for a great price brand new fully loaded with sat nav, panniers, quickshifter, keyless ride in red. I payed 17.5k (a good deal you'll agree). The bmw panniers are shite they leak when they get dropped. The top box is very small to. Its not just the bike its the whole bmw experience the dealers are our of this world. Good vid mate. It makes a change from other vids that tell us what we already know.

    Absolutely agree with you. I dreamed about this bike back in 2003. I only got it a week ago. which is a 66reg. I agree with your keyless ignition comment. The luggage is a big YES. Which I am shopping for it at the moment. You got it very cheap for £1200. I do have the Akro on it and I dont think you need to spend on an Akro as the BMW got a good quality pipe as standard. Its brilliantly smooth engine. I had 12 plate boxer engine and they normally rough. The feel of the ride worth millions of £££ to me. I don't care what people says (oh you bought a Tractor). I had an RT before BUT the GS A is my GOD.....

    Fantastic looking bike fella. I currently have a 2017 Africa Twin, I test rode the GSA,Yam Super Ten and the Africa Twin. As you said I fell in love with the GSA but then went on the forums and lost confidence in it when I read about the problems guys were having with reasonably new bikes,and for the price of the BMW they should be invincible.
    Also got told by a salesman who used to work for BMW,for god sake sell it before the warranty runs out if you buy one.
    Hope your videos can sway my opinion next time round.

    Just bought the same bike today, I’m 63 and as long as I can get me leg over I’ll keep riding. The seat height drops quite nicely and I’ve got luggage and a sat nav. Looking forward to some long days out. They are great machines but I’ve kept my beloved R100rt which I’ve had since 96

      Excellent like you say as long as you can keep getting on it you can ride. I just hit 50 with absolutely no plans in selling mine for years to come. I was watching program a few months ago on how good for your health riding a motorbike actually is. The fresh air and the free feeling keeps people active apparently. There was 80 year olds saying riding kept them young and active. What part of the world are you from and do you have any good adventures planned for next summer?

    Put that ADV hemet on. Then you have the total look. This bike rocks. People who don’t like it’s looks are not getting. It’s about it’s utilitarian Swiss Army knife look that makes this bike absolutely stunning.

    What a beast, my May 2016 model had its 40000 km or 24854 ml service this week. I use it daily for work and weekends for breakfast runs. What a pleasure off road. Test drive the competition and you would know that there is nothing out there that can compete. Well maybe the Moto Guzzi Stelvio

    In what will seem like the blink of an eye we will all be old and preparing to die - IF we are lucky enough to get that far. You are right to seize the moment and live your dreams. I once did a trip to the arctic circle on a CB750 with an old rucksack strapped to the back and a hundred quid in my back pocket. It was the trip of a lifetime. I found work when I got there and headed south when winter started to creep in. Norway is an absolutely stunning place to ride with long sweeping bends, high quality roads and little traffic...I highly recommend it as a first of many trip.

    Ewen and the long way round guys wanted KTM's but KTM would not provide free bikes like BMW did. Stupid move by KTM.

    • @Enonymouse_
      @Enonymouse_ 7 лет назад +3

      EH, BMW has MUCH better global presence so it was actually fortuitous that the long way around show chose them instead. Being at the ass end of the earth means it would be a long wait for KTM parts if they broke something, those guys broke lots of stuff.
      KTM is not in the habit of giving anyone free shit, no surprise there. The long way around certainly contributed to my desire to own an ADV bike big time, but not a particular brand. Rather the idea of a bike that can and will go anywhere, I live in very rural terrain that can be really harsh when weather is not nice.
      For those that get a GS, gear shift assist and keyless are great features. Skip the panniers, no sense in paying for the cost of something like that just because it has the BMW name. The nav if you don't already own a garmin is a sensible add-on. The GSA has a very nice soft clutch pull, softer than other bikes i've tried.

    • @Da.Onus.Burger.618
      @Da.Onus.Burger.618 7 лет назад +3

      They sure did, but I'm glad they went with BMW. KTM really dropped the ball on that one. Can you imagine if they used KTM' Adventures or even Super Tenere's for this trip? They'd be the most popular bikes on the planet!

    • @Enonymouse_
      @Enonymouse_ 7 лет назад +1

      I highly doubt the tenere would survive that kind of riding, even the bmw's they were given (or loaned) had lots of issues along the way, including (IIRC) one or two unrecoverable complete failures.

      @paletes3 7 лет назад +2

    Just got myself a GS. I understand what you are saying. Arthritis is taking over many parts of my life and this beast is allowing me to continue pursuing my love of riding/touring. Spoilt myself too? You bet, but I’ve been working for 38 years now, out of debt so I’m happy with where I’m at. Still sneak off to my man cave just to look at the bike. As you, Can’t believe I now own one. Another benefit is my wife loves the comfort of the seating position and pannier backrest. This helps out when I get online to buy other goodies for the beast. Thanks for your thoughts.

      Russell Locke I can fully relate to everything on your message. I suffer with IBS which on a bad day makes all of my joints inflamed and painful. I have had a few years of really stressful times so this bike means a lot more to me than you could ever imagine. I go out to the garage just to look at it and think about trips I have planned for it. I might ride solo from Oxford to Monaco in April as my very first big trip. To most people that’s nothing but for me it’s exciting and a big ordeal. With work family and commitments getting outside the Oxford ring road is special. My wife loves the seating position so it makes things easier for me to. Enjoy the bike mate. What part of the world are you from?

      I’m from Australia, South Coast of New South Wales. Some great coastal twisties through national parks with the hinterland lying just behind. Weather a lot more variable with some quite hot & humid summers and cool (not really cold) winters. Rainfall evenly spread throughout the seasons. Riding gear in summer needs ventilation and whilst you do need to rug up in winter, nothing like you would need.

    I like that being a "Charley" or "Ewan" was your motivation. Oh, I saw "Long Way 'Round" c. 2009 and was floored, as you were. So, bought a Ducati Multistrada in 2010 when they were brand new and revolutionized touring with all the ride modes and etc. Got out of a newer Multi recently, now bikeless ten years on for the first time since 1987.
    I have ridden with Charlie B., with his manager Billy Ward. We started in Cape Town and road up to Vic Falls Zimbabwe some years ago, 2,700 miles incl. c. 2,000 off-road. I was on a standard GS, a rental, no Adventures were offered. I'll tell you, the 2015 GS saved my bacon on the backroads of Namibia and South Africa like you wouldn't believe: these bikes btw totally work on good gravel roads. Even on good trails, within reason. It seems dodgy due to the bulk and feels that way day 1, but if you've done any off road on lighter bikes, it's really candy.
    That the ABS and riding modes work on gravel is almost supernatural. They work, I'm still here, period. Africa kills bikes, people, animals and everything else w/o the slightest mercy. I dropped it in the sand a few times, no big deal. One guy crashed hard and had to fly back to Tasmania with multiple fractures, so we weren't kidding around.
    Best 21 odd days I've ever spent on a bike. Charlie, btw, is a pleasant fellow and likes to chat in small groups or 1:1. We had a few talks on quiet evenings in lodges from Cape Town to somewhere in Botswana. I can't recommend that enough, and fell in live with the GS. Should have bought one an hour after landing back in Seattle WA USA. I have my eye on a '17 GS Adventure, right now, which is why I'm here and you're very persuasive. Might just go for it!

    Congratulations with an excellent choice in my opinion! I've had 3 beemers in 2.5 years, two RTs (1150 & 1200) and ridden over 60k km with those. April this year I got myself a 2016 GS Adventure with all the bells and whistles, mileage was only a wee over 1500km so almost brand new. Considered the 2017 but got the current for cheap. have since done over 21.000km with it, on all sorts of roads, lots of gravel, mountain and wood roads. Average fuel consumption (which includes lots of riding up/down mountains passes in the Alps this summer) has been around 4.8 liter per 100 kilometer. Pretty amazing also considering all the active riding:). Btw... think the wet weight is 263kg :)
    Interesting what i read in posts here, but.. as always, people are different. Views are different. Personally the crankshaft is an ideal solution. I know of people who've done over 200.000km with those and no issues at all. Comparing to different brands quickly becomes comparing apples and oranges. I've got friends who ride other adventure bikes, and they agree the GSA is an awesome all-rounder. With rgds to maneuverability, again people are different. I find it one of the best I've ever ridden, whether in dense traffic or elsewhere. The boxer engine makes a low center of gravity that does the trick.. for me at least:
    Prior to getting one I spent lots of hours of research before landing on the GSA. Evaluated alternatives such as Yamaha Super Tenerè, Ducati Multistrada Enduro and KTM 1290 SA. But the GSA won me over. It was and is the perfect choice for me. Being a tall guy (6'3) and having taken it on pretty demanding roads in my country I beg to differ on the height aspect. Suits me perfectly as it is. Doesn't affect balance at all, on the contrary, if you go more off-road or demanding road that is a definite plus in my book.
    Lastly. I read people talk about problems with the GS's but there are problems with almost anything. I've talked to lots of GS/GSA owners, both with oilhead and LCs. My impression is that there aren't more issues with these than there are with any other type. It might also be worth considering the number of bikes sold, as we talk about the most selling adventure motorcycle of all. So naturally, that most be attributed to the statistics.
    Ah yes.. one last thing, I got Rox Risers mounted on mine. Vastly improved handling! Plus add the flexibility with regards to finding the exact right handlebar position. And the original screen, not good IMO. After some studies chose Puig Touring screen with Visor. Much better under almost any condition. But again, I am a tall bloke :)

    I totally agree with your outlook on life, you've got to go for it. Like you said, work hard so you can have some nice things in life. I bought a GS TE 12 months ago which cost me a similar amount but the pleasure I get from touring on it is worth every penny and more.

    The only thing I don't like about the GS is when you have to clean one, there are so many little crevices that get dirt in them that you need to spend hours just to make it presentable. All you need now is an Akrapovic full system ;)

    It certainly is a beautiful machine. Sadly my one was too unreliable to keep. It was a 2014 bought new. One thing I didn't care for was the seat forces you into the tank and I found myself always shimmying back. Was partially resolved by lowering the rear and raising the front of the seat.
    Such a shame that I had to sell mine, but not even the BMW mechanics could fix what was wrong with my model. Definitely the most beautiful bike I have ever owned and an absolute pleasure to ride, when it worked.

    Guys im trading my 2015 GSA in on the 2018 one next month , reason being that this bike is everything you need in a motorcycle. I'm 1,97m tall and weigh in at 130kg , this bike is all that works and that's why i moved to BMW , at first i cringed at the price but just closed my eyes and bought one . Now there's no turning back , maintenance is cheap and reliability is tops.

    My pal has one, i sat on it yesterday. Felt a little strange to be sat so low on such a big bike compared to my Africa Twin. My view is that you certainly don’t have to answer to anyone but yourself over the reasons for, or cost of anything you purchase. Whatever does it for you is what its all about. Yes, some of us have ‘off-road’ bikes that will never see the dirt or go round the world for that matter, but whats wrong with dreaming and the thought of doing it? Sometimes thats what its about. The thought that we could. I know it sound crass but if thats what does it for me, I choose not to listen to the nay sayers. I keep saying I’m going to Mongolia when I’m 50. I may never do it, but I honestly enjoy thinking about the prospect of it. These are the things that keep us going and long may it continue. Well done in fulfilling your dream my friend. Enjoy it!

Who knows Lee I might bump into you in Mongolia at the age of fifty lol. I am doing a big road trip this year so that’s a start.

    congrats for your exquisite taste in bikes. Why have I purchased mine? Because of Long Way Round, of course. Their adventure made want one really really badly. I couldn’t believe how much fun they’ve had. Few years later I finally got my dream bike, a 2017 R1200 GSA. It was produced in late 2016 so basically it’s a 2017. The snow was half a metre high and I bought mine on 4th of January. It must’ve been some sort of happy hours at BMW because I was their fifth customer in the second day since their reopening. Anyway, after almost two years of ownership I have only two major complaints. First is its price tag and second... well, it is Satan! It constantly seduces me, lures me to take longer and longer and farther and farther trips away from home and I’m powerless next to such temptations. I’m a weak guy! At first they were quick raids, one day only and not more than 500km. They rather rapidly turned into two days trips, 1500 km. Shortly after the numbers meant nothing to me. It was mathematics and I hate mathematics. I design stuff for a living. Anyway, like I said, I wanted more and I knew what: difficult, challenging roads. In 2017 I took almost all of them. This year I repeated the hard roads but this time I did them twice (each) in one single trip. Got my fix and I thought it’ll be enough for six months but was it? No fucking way. National borders were like a prison to me so I ventured across the borders. Once I took a 3 hours business trip to Bulgaria and 48 hours later and four border crossings (I also checked their Black Sea shore) I’ve returned home victorious. It was challenging. An old fart once told me this: _“Listen son, with an ADV you’ll be leaving your home only once a year. For six months”_ . _"No fuckin way”_ I said to him _”and what about your wife?”_ He responded _”what wife? I’m divorced. Three times”_ ...WTF!...
    And my Odyssey continues. To add salt to the injury, my friend, after every trip I was (and still am) methodically improving and upgrading my bike with all sorts of necessary trinkets and gadgets. After all it is a clever plan to improve my safety, I am investing into my physical integrity. Of course I am. In fact, I have no idea how on earth I have lived my life without them! Radiator guards, clear & metallic headlight covers (couldn’t made my mind which one I like) bottle holder, phone holder, hand guards, touratech safe box, pannier back rest, highway pegs (a must!), gear shifter enlarger, handlebar riser, windshield reinforcer, auxiliary lights guards, a second power socket, Hill Assist _(a fortune well spent on a sequence of “1” and “0” - fuck me! It is a bloody code for fuck’s sake)_ , a tent (it was a horror moment for my wife... can’t say why, it beats me), a camping stove, a comfort rider pillion, a tank bag, boots, another pair of boots, and another followed by an _oh, this jacket is definitely a must_ moment, jerry cans, sporks, summer and winter gloves, t-shirts, touring outfit, helmet... sorry, helmets, another touring jacket and... and the list goes on and on... My bike is a bloody Christmas Tree on wheels.
    Understandably, this situation had morphed pretty quickly from _“well, of course darling, you can take the trip with your buddies, go have fun. What dear? A radiator grill? Go ahead, honey!”_ into _”really? again?”_
    It gets harder and harder to explain what on earth is going on... Wait, please give me a second to push my new “21 Brothers” soft panniers freshly shipped from Poland to make room for my laptop. Better! Where was I? Oh, yeah, it gets harder and harder for me to explain when I’ll put an end to all this. I have no clue. It is tough, I say. It’s the Devil so do yourself a favour and save your soul while you still can... Now excuse me but I have to pack for my next trip, a 4k plus km trip to Greece. My plan is to follow the land contour of that country in 10 days and I better get home in time otherwise I’ll miss the 18th birthday of my eldest daughter and I might sleep forever on my door mat. Good luck, you’ll need it badly... uuuu... _how on earth have I missed this magnificent and I’m absolutely sure useful accessory_ ... Oh, damn you, BMW, burn in hell!!!...
