I was a SOSUS ET from 73-77. The ability to detect Soviet subs from thousands of miles afar was amazing then. I can only imagine what that system has evolved to the present. Fly Navy!

They use a LOT more than sonar instrumentation to detect enemy subs. Densitometers, magnetometers, gravitometometers, and other physical anomaly detectors are used, probably even more than sound waves.

The American planes have no MAD installed, due to weight issues, and the standard high operational altitude. It is installed in the version sold to India

@paulhill1665 that and they quit using MAD because subs these days are non magnetic

A lot of it comes down to identifying the sound a particular engine gives off.

I can't believe CIWS doesn't hold more ammo. Especially considering it's 4500 RPM firing rate.

There's one Country's Navy that outperforms every other on the planet at ASW work........ FACT!!!!
    The Royal Navy.
The crews of our Type 23's...
currently in the process of being replaced by the new, fancy, even more capable Type 26.... are absolutely phenomenal at the job, they are the Gold Standard.
To add to this already truly impressive capability, we also use the brilliant US built P-8 Poseidon maritime patrol aircraft and the World beating Astute class nuclear attack submarine.
The Royal Navy has got to this level of capability after spending the vast majority of the Cold War honing their skills against the Russian navy.
    🇬🇧✌️

@@mratchford42992 No clue? Here are some clues. Vast savings in resources. Reduction in annual GHG emissions from flying jets around and bombing children in tents. Vast reduction in the level and incidence of extreme cruelty.
