  • This week on The Overrun, Chase and Jobe hop behind the wheel of the Mazda Miata. While there's nothing new for 2023, the Miata is still at its very best, and the little sports car is still almost impossible to beat for driving fun.

    I just sold my 2016 Miata Sport w/maual transmission with 47,500 miles and only a few minor interior issues(the hard plastic sun visors had cracked and broke off due to probablty sun exposure and temperature changes over the seven and a half years I owned it) for $16,100 at Carvana. I then purchased a 2024 Mazda 3 sedan a few hours later. I just discovered this video and now I miss my Miata so very much already(but Im glad I made the change)
    I also owned an NC at one time and I agree the ND has made significant improvements to the cars design both internally and externally(apart from those poorly designed sun visors which may have been changed since 2016). The only advantage to the NC generation Sport for me was the traditional hand cranked windows and actual key start instead of push start but Im old and set in my ways. I never personally had an issue with the lack of storage space because its what I expected. There were a few instances in which I lamented the limited space but I got over it the instant I cranked the engine and began my drive.
    Over seven and a half years I only had to replace the tires once and at seven years I also preemptively replaced the orginal battery. Other than that I had no issues at all. I changed the oil every 6000 miles instead of the recommended 10,000 miles. I also had my first oil change at 1,000 miles to swap out the engine break in oil with new clean oil. The break in period of that first 1000 miles or so will deposit a bit of metallic debris in the original oil and is perfectly normal.
    I drove to Austin Texas and back to Virginia once, to and from the Atlanta area on four occasions, and five times to Myrtle Beach, SC and back. I enjoyed every mile on those long trips in the Miata(except when it rained forcing me to drive top up) The top itself, after no telling how many openings and closings was still in fantastic shape after nearly eight years.

      Seven and a half years and only 1 change of tires? LOL, I have to replace them at least yearly. I do drive hard a lot. (2020 ND MT Club)

    Good honest review guys thanks! I've had my ND1 since 2022 and in 30 years of driving, it's by far the best car I've ever had.
    The thing that gets me is that almost ALL reviews on the Miata say how good it is. Love it!

    What gets me about all these car reviews on the MX-5's is when they start talking about how little space there is in the car. It's a roadster not a Cadillac! Try talking down the storage space in a $90K+ Morgan and see how much attention you get. Physics dictates, the more mass a vehicle has, the larger asses it will fit in it. These two guys are doing a good job with this review, it's honest and straight forward with explanations on deficiencies the roadster may have. It is a true ROADSTER.

    Ive been researching new cars for weeks....i literally cant find a better car for the price. Also ive had the original na miata for years and i absolutely loved that car. Thats coming from a person that used to make fun of miatas for being lame or slow. That all changed the day i drove one. Also right now my daily is a motorcycle and let me tell you this miata has much more storage than my ktm 690 so im sold on one

    I love (and have) the bbs/recaro/brembo package - but to call out….your comment implied that the speakers in the headrests are part of that package. They’re available without that package too
    There is one digital pane in the instrument cluster. The fact that the tach and speedometer are analog is a huge plus to me. Eff digitizing everything.
    $400 on an Axel back greatly improves the exhaust note
    I sold a Porsche to buy my club
    I also daily a gr86. Both are terrific cars

    Owner of this exact ND2 Club trim in Soul Red Crystal, 2019 version. A lot of the handling quibbles with the base model are improved with just the few suspension changes on that trim and the Recaros definitely do not let you slide around. Only issues I really have are some cheap interior plastics that rattle, and which Mazda could easily address without increasing weight, they just need to insulate the backs of the trim pieces better. The car doesn’t have a competitor though, which can be both a good and bad thing. What I’d really like to see is Honda and Toyota get back on their game (the GR86 is nice, but it’s not a roadster) … somebody needs to keep Mazda on their toes and keep the future MX-5 competitive.

    Great review guys.I'm based in Australia and have the mid-spec 2022 Miata manual GT. I drove Club model and did not think it was worth the significant price bump for the seats, wheels and brakes. I prefer the satin finished wheels on the GT model, and by the way in the model reviewed only the front brakes are Brembos, rear brakes a standard Mazda brakes painted red. The GT interior also looks a little classier I think. I went for the soft top, did not feel the extra $$ and weight was worth it for the RF, and no regrets there at all. Just a wonderfully engineered car, period.

      Thanks! The Club trim does get slightly different suspension setup, which this car has. We're actually not 100% sure who makes the damper, for all we know Bilstein could be the supplier. What really matters is that the car rides fantastically, and it's great for both daily driving and sporty, fun stuff like you see in the video!

    • @danielisbell
      @danielisbell 11 месяцев назад

      Yes, both the club and GT trim get the Bilstein dampers if you get the manual transmission. On the ND1, only the club with manual got them (or the GT with GT-S package in 2019). Same for the LSD & shock tower brace.

    • @theoverrunofficial
      @theoverrunofficial  Год назад +1

      Unless you're physically unable to drive a manual, this is one of those cars where you need to buy the stick. It's part of the experience, and frankly, Mazda is not a company known for great automatic transmissions built for enthusiasts. It'll be slow to shift and nowhere near as fun as a manual.

    That freaking key is almost a deal breaker, first, its ugly, second, it's size of a flip phone, third, i got my iphone and wallet, do I really need a key that big, for such a small car all I need is lock unlock, I don't even need trunk or panic, two buttons, they could have made it size of 3 quarters.

    • @theoverrunofficial
      @theoverrunofficial  5 месяцев назад

      Kinda a take here but I think we all just need to move to digital keys- car keys are too big now because of functionality like remote park/start and a physical key should only be used as a backup for when your app doesn't work. Not sure how this would contribute to weight/bloat in cars today, but keys are definitely bloated too.

    Breaking news.... I have the 2023 RF in base trim and it has speakers in the headrest, don't waste money on the Bose... the regular stereo system kicks ass. Although I would recommend the Brembo brakes as the normal ones are a bit spongy (my previous car had Brembo brakes and I do feel the difference greatly). One more thing guys... in a sports car review, cup holders should not even be mentioned at all, come on. If you buy this type of car, why should you even be concerned about a piece of plastic that holds a can? Can you not live without it?
