    I was a professional dancer, both in NYC and California in my earlier years. Now at 50, I have MS (had it for 20 years now), and while there is no cure, the 'treatment' for relapses is steroids. They leave you with weight gain and not great feelings about yourself :( So coming to terms with all that has been a long, long journey. I count calories, drink lots of water and have had to forgive myself many times for feeling bad about what I look like. But it's hard when you work SO hard for what you want and then it's gone. Happens to all athletes at some point, but there you go. So I feel good about eating as healthy as I can and having wine and coffee, my two last vices. :)
    I am currently in an MS relapse, so while I get infusions I am eating as healthy as possible and giving myself a break. Watching videos like this really helps, so thanks Jay :)

      Wine and coffee are great vices to have =) I'm happy to hear that this helped, you're in a really challenging situation. I can only imagine the struggle. It's really encouraging to hear that you've learned how to approach it and, even more importantly, how to forgive yourself. I'm still working on that one.

      I should admit that I haven't fully forgiven myself, but I'm learning. It's a life lesson (for me). I toast you with my afternoon coffee - never sugar, but a touch of cream ;)

    Let me be the first (?) to say that I lost weight on the Jay Swanson Diet!!! I needed to drop some lbs (before my June visit to Europe/Paris, and have NEVER had the willpower to diet. When you said how you just counted your calories (and ran) I gave it a try! Someone else said don't worry about calories as long as it's healthy -- for some of us it doesn't work that way. Your calorie counting, and watching you run, got me motivated. I knocked off 13 of the 15 lbs that I wanted (and I swear I will get to the last couple when I get back). So keep up the Jay Swanson Diet because I know it does work! I feel so much better about myself thanks to you!

    Great Vlog, Thank You for being so honest about your struggle with your weight. It was just what I needed to hear.. I have been struggling with my weight since I was a child and also felt embarrassed when I had to go to the beach or a swimming pool, summer spring, and autumn were a nightmare because I could not wear a coat or layers. Then In my 20's I lost a huge amount of weight I was down to 130 which was the lowest had ever been but, I was doing it for the wrong reason, I was doing it for someone not for me (Funny thing that after I had lost all that weight he left me) and slowly but surely I gained all of it back So, yes I understand what you are saying about wanting to do it for yourself.. After my sadness faded I lost some of it but, due some injuries first a broken ankle, then dislocated knee and a herniated disk in my back it was pretty impossible to do any exercise for a long time. But, I recently was able to join a gym so I am psyched to get back in shape and regain the strength and balance I had lost due my injuries. So please keep us posted about your progress. All Love & Light..

      That's really tough - it seems like a common story, people losing weight for someone only to have that person leave them. You certainly aren't alone in that either. I think you're really right about needing to do it for yourself. The hardest part, and what makes the biggest difference, is all in the eating. That's why I struggled with it so much (and still do) - I can get into a good workout routine, but cutting back on what I eat is really really hard. I'll keep you posted!

    I totally understand the need to feel confident, I’ve also always had issues with the way I look and losing weight has been helping me feel more comfortable in the sense that I now have some control over what I look like. I think you should definitely start again right away, don’t put it off longer or you’ll regret it longer! Maybe you could make some videos of good walks to take in Paris or best places to eat something nutritious/low cal or something like that so you have more motivation and reason to get going because it will be for a video? I’m sure you’ll find something that works soon. Good luck, and feel free to message if you ever need encouragement!

  • @miguelrode

    Jay! You say you have to find the "right motivation"... but it sounds to me like you already have all the ingredients for it! Listen to yourself at 10:50... being healthier, feeling better, joint pain gone, having more energy in general... is that not enough motivation? You also say that when you lost 40 pounds before, a lot of health issues went away - so you've already experienced the benefits. IMHO the problematic approach is to think of weight loss as a diet you start and stop, i.e. a phase when you are generally miserable, deprived of things you like and looking forward to the next cheat day only to fall off the horse. A much better way to frame it is to change your habits for good, really rethink what you eat and slowly but surely educate your taste towards healthy eating. And then it becomes truly sustainable for life. "Way of eating" instead of "diet"...

    • @JaySwanson
      @JaySwanson 6 лет назад

      I don't disagree at all - the proper motivations are in place intellectually - it just takes something extra to push you to action on a daily basis and maintain discipline long enough to alter habits. Definitely moving in the right direction here =D

    Hey Jay ! I'm quite a new subscriber, I found your channel thanks to Cheryl's. I really like your content and i absolutely love the way you edit your videos, thanks for that ! I'm also dieting on quite a daily basis because I have hypothyroidism and I have to control what I eat. Congratulations on your weight loss, that's impressive, you can be proud ! I have one tip that really works well when you have been treated yourself for a couple of days : dedicate one day to eating proteins (at least 250grams) and green vegetables for lunch. And for dinner green vegetables and eggs ( but you only eat the white part , 4 of them ). I'm not gonna lie ; it's gonna be a tough day, but if you can manage to do this day once in a while, the results are great ! It really balances everything when you have had a chaotic week for example. Good luck with everything and thanks again !

    Oh God, weight - the story of my life. I too have always been "the fat kid", even when I really wasn't. Then I was... well - you know how it goes. The first time I really lost a lot of weight, like just over 60 pounds, I went to Weight Watchers, but after I went to radio school I gained loads back. WW at that time was very focused on calorie reduction. Years went by, life went up and down, weight went up and down. I seemed to keep gaining and losing 20 to 30 pounds every few years. Then I developed form of arthritis and life really took a turn for the worse, and I wound up over 100 pounds overweight. I followed a Ketogenic diet and lost 60 pounds, but have put some back on in the past few months, and am struggling with motivation. Not to mention that keto can be rather expensive. But, I felt wonderful when I was doing it! I find that the most motivating thing is to almost make it a game at which I play myself. Try and beat my "high score", etc. Recently, my pain levels have improved significantly, and I've started exercising again, which is pretty motivating itself. I still have a lot to lose, but I'm hoping the exercise will help with that!

    Interesting my switch was life modelling as a student for extra money there must be 20 year old etchings of me in the buff floating around bournemouth. I also did that post thyroid issues when my body looked different again and was an amazing confident boost. Small changes everyday, finding exercise you like and learning to read what your body wants is it hungry or thirsty, many confuse hunger for thirst, you fancy a milkshake, your body wants protein and calcium so find a lower cal version. But like you say give yourself treat days. Both food and self care loose a stone book a facial/massage small steps and life style choices

      Jay Swanson surprising what you will do for beer money as a student 🙈 also helped not being around toxic people that made me think I was chubby. Remember other people don’t see your hang ups or issues in the same light. Also its easier when your more financially stable you can afford to make the right choices. You are working towards a goal it is not a race you will get there be kinder to yourself 💪🏻

    Two pregnancies, living in the country (ie needing a car to go anywhere) and a sit-down job have been my downfall. Hoping to lose a bit of weight in Paris because I'll be walking so much more. Metro steps alone are a workout! Food wise, salad season is upon us so tuna, chicken & salad in the fridge, a bit of pasta & you're sorted, kitchen or not. Cheap as well.

    I enjoyed this video a lot, for many reasons. Weightloss is a mind game, as far as I can tell. Not one that I'm winning at, especially, since I started learning about France and how they eat good, fatty food (except they know how to balance it!). I weigh myself daily. This is really important because it prevents weight-gain creep. Mostly I just try to maintain, but right now I want to lose some weight. How I do it is counting calories and through portion control, but otherwise there are no forbidden foods. I am just very aware that the slice of cake I am craving may represent 75% of my calorie allotment for the day.

      Elaine Vincent for a guy up to Jays hight and size,and activity level, not to mention how spread out his meals seem to get- you could even get away with several hard boiled eggs, yolks induced as they are now being touted as nearly the perfect food and before I developed the current health problems/allergies, they were the start to my every day, kept me fuller and more satisfied than any carbs!!! They even make for a perfect lunch, snack by themselves or even a very light,easy on the go dinner! Douse them in hot sauce, herbs and vinegar, Dijon muster or even salsa, go classic and scatter over salad, add some low cal oil &high quality vinegar (I suggest apple cider for the heart health), cover the eggs and salad with heaps of healthy homemade salsa, onions, peppers, and any other veggies you want on there to your heart's desire veggies and OLÉ! Go you for not knocking the good ol wholesome & filling egg theory 😜😎🐓

    You received a lot of comments so I hope you will still have time to read this one. I was never fat (beside the time I was pregnant), but I was never thin. I tried different diets, some worked, some didn't, but when they did, I didn't manage to keep the results. Then I went through IVF treatments to get pregnant and I gained something like 12 kg from the hormones and the mental stress that made me eat more.
    I went vegan something like 4.5 years ago. At first I just became vegetarian because I didn't know what to eat, and I lost 5 kg in the first month (while eating a lot, I have to say). Then I was the junk food vegan for a while. I usually cook my food so I learned how to cook healthier, and in the end, 2 years ago, I started working with "My Fitness Pal". It helped me a lot with learning the nutritional value of my food and it helped me lose 14 kg- and it was not difficult like before. I also managed to keep the weight stable since then.
    But if you are serious about losing weight I think you will need to think about eating more wholesome foods and try to avoid the junk. Not totally- you can decide for example on a cheat day, but it means you will need to cook something more than industrial noodles and shopping for an empty baguette..
    Maybe with the new chateau you will be able to cook for yourself. Anyway, I totally identify with feeling shy and not good about the way I look. I am still working on it, and I have to say that as time goes by- I care less and less about what people think, and although I do look better now than ever in my eyes- even if I didn't- I don't care. It's not my problem anymore. Good luck!!!

    Hi I am in the process of losing and have lost 25 lbs. I am on the wheatbelly diet. I think it would be helpful for you too. If you have audible then you can listen to the books that speak on this topic and see if it agrees with you. I know that I am getting healthier without counting calories just understanding how the body works and and as a result my body responds by dropping the pounds. I started out with the keto diet which is pretty similar to the wheatbelly but WB take it further and I found out about it on RUclips. I wish you the best.

    i did lose weight before: counting calories. it was slow, but it worked. now i'm in the process of losing weight again. Last year i gained some 13 kg? in 2 or 3 weeks - all i did was sleep the whole day and wake up to eat, then sleep again. i was exhausted after the job from hell in a hellish supermarket :/ i only managed to lose some 3-4 kg since the beginning of the year with some workout and finally managing to eat less.
    my motivation is simple: i dont want to gain weight, i dont want to be fat. [and even with the extra 13 kg i wasnt fat for my height, i was normal. im reaching the 'ideal' weight now] at my 'normal' weight, i was getting tired too fast from doing simple stuff like walking. my clothes wouldnt fit me and im not willing to buy bigger stuff ... and now that i started to lose some weight, i started to squeeze in my favorite clothes again :) seeing others working out also motivates me.

    Weight loss and maintaining the loss is so incredibly difficult! Weight is something I am extremely sensitive about and to. I grew up extremely overweight....I got up to 320 lbs and I was miserable. I had tried every diet known to man, i I have a thyroid condition and I was prediabetic. With my physicians I decided to have a gastric bypass and reached my goal within about 15 months. I get frustrated because many people say gastric bypass is "cheating" or the easy way.out and it is NOT. Even though you have minimal capacity for food your brain still wants the foods you're accustomed to. It's a daily battle of making good food choices and retraining your mind about what tastes good. Calories are NOT alike. A candy bar at 250 calories is much different than a fruit salad at 250 calories! My surgery was 20 years ago and I have been able to maintain my weight. However, I watch everything I eat and I have body dysmorphia from all my years of being so big and how I was treated. I was treated so differtly when I was heavy. After I lost weight a man who had once made moo-ing noises at me when I walked by and laughed his ass off with his friends didn't recognize me and starting hitting on me big time and asked me out. Obviously I slammed him but it is truly an example of how you are treated differently. I guess my point is whether you're 120 lbs or 420 lbs you are the same person. Your personality is intact....even though your weight is decreasing!
    Long winded story of my weight loss struggle.......
    Everyone deserves to be treated with respect, compassion and kindness.
    Good job Jay! You are doing great. Remember that you didn't gain weight overnight so you aren't going to lose it overnight. Slow and steady wins the race and it is definitely the best way to maintain your weight loss. A demain!😊

I have a tight budget and hate exercise,although I do like walking and swimming,so,anything that costs money isn't really an option.I have an exercise bike,it's in the corner lol.I comfort eat,so that doesn't help and I can find an excuse for not exercising..I have this habit,if Im told not to do something,I will go ahead and do it,for example,I would do it in secret,a sort of Screw you,you can't make me mentality,not healthy either! As for weight loss. . .its a process. In my experience it’s more about nutrition than calorie count. If your body loves and burns certain foods well the calorie count really does not matter much. The hard part is finding tasty foods that agree with your mind, body and soul. Seems like your activity level is great other than maybe incorporating some weights. I’m there myself. I hate the repetition of lifting but oh well life ain’t fair.🤷🏼‍♀️😒😇

      Shuray Merriweather I have to second you again, saying you're IMHO, I think, you're more than correct😎 ....said it somewhere else here, but seeing a highly skilled cancer nutritionist whose certified in her field working out of a famous hospital I lucked out living not too far away from....alternate that with seeing a regular nutrition/ dietitian specialist semi regularly, like every other week and keeping a food diary- that coupled with my own lifetime health struggled and recent desire to become a nutritionist myself (long-winded response just to certify my sources here-) only to agree completely- Jay, wanted to mention, but for fear, didn't- counting calories truly makes one miserable if you stay not-filled up at every or any meal. And stay largely hungry. You are better off never limiting the amount of fruits and veggies you eat. I know, sounds dumb and boring right? I explain further on down

We stare at ourselves in the mirror all day, it’s bound to mess with our heads at some point. But you’re looking good man. You broke the 200lb mark right?

      For sure - I can imagine dancing in a mirror in tight clothing would add a new element. And yeah! I dropped below 200 but I'm not sure I kept it off post-Scotland

      It's usually really good - and all of their food is made in house. Helps that they're the only good coffee within a 30 min walk of my place (wish I was joking - my gardienne was shocked when she found out how far I was walking for coffee)

    Oh crap, for me it is weight gain. Stats: 62kg, 180cm. Still rowing on a Concept 2 about 16km per day, main form of transport: bike. If I falter in this regiment I loose weight. Tried various diets ranging from high caloric intake to high protein intake and combos of it. Nowadays I don't bother with it anymore. Just one tip, for you regular should be key. There is a way to burn off belly fat, just it is a regiment which starts with 10 days eating nothing to very little and a transition to a healthier diet. The regiment is called Sport Fasting. Ah well, one more cent 😎
    An article about the regiment. Sorry it is in Dutch and a pdf file. Just remember google translate is your friend www.fittergy.nl/wp-content/uploads/2018/05/19_sportvasten-.pdf

    I'm about a million years behind in your vlogs but have you though about trying a DietBet? Basically you pledge money to say you will lose weight. I think it's 10% over six months or 4% in a month - they have different challenges. Then if you lose weight you win money. You have to submit (private) full body photographs and photographs of you on a scale. It might be worth looking into as losing money for not losing weight would be a good motivator (for me at least) to lose weight.

    • @JaySwanson
      @JaySwanson 6 лет назад

      That sounds intense! I'm not sure if it would properly motivate me or not, but I definitely was feeling the urge to get back into running shape the more I ate in the US haha

      Jane Pilkington I actually gotta second that...with love. Not at all in a judgmental way-needing to see a cancer nutritionist whose best of the best- I had several pointers, I actually considered leaving something to the effect of this before but remember Jay whenever you tentatively first shared your weight loss goals last year, mentioning kinda shying away from this sort of advice? Anyhow, I actually am a long time nutrition uber fan, recently diverted a bit from my fifteen year trek into becoming a nutritionist- but I can freely admit now Jayafter a year without without must trepidation that not just in looks, speech patterns, build, and even insecurities down to struggles like you discussed here including the distorted body image- you seriously match my longest relationship and ex (he ironically possessed SUPER TALENT just like you!) Enough to call you two doppelgangers!!! 😨 he lost 78lbs successfully in just over a couple months after I stayed out of it for three and a half years, until he finally asked me to intervene! As Jane here suggests, not going vegan per say but eating all natural foods, high in fruits and veggies too his fill, that means no calorie counting plain fruits and veggies. How we solved the "I don't like salad, but I love nachos" conundrum? I told him to make salsa or buy all natural salsa and hot sauce with only "real" ingredients and make nachos...without the chips. Sounds boring I know, but try it. Cut up avocados and lots of different peppers, even pre-packaged beats for flavor! And i sincerely promise x it may not please like a bed of nachos would....but the fact that you can guilt-free get completely full without portion control probably may make up for it? Jane- I sincerely apologize for hijacking your comment, I'll totally remove this and re- comment elsewhere if you indicate, like I dunno...leave a frownie underneath or something! I just piggie backed off of you because I did not have the guts to say anything till you did! Last suggestion, try eating meat without starch Jay, I know it sounds crazy but due to severe allergies if mine and stomach problems, I've spent near a lifetime researching this, and through trial and error, plus needing to visit cancer nutritionist for personal reasons, can HIGHLY recommend not only the above, but to spend major time researching "the proper science behind food combining". The least I can say, is this way your body will never starve....😍😋💘

    • @Paul_C

      Margo, the real problem with a greens only diet is the lack of some essential nutrients which can be supplemented by either pills or some some other source of protine, insects would do fine. For me I choose meat though that is limited to twice weekly. Then three times fish and two times just veggies. Second thing to consider is the balance of omega 3. Fish oil is king it negates some of the omega 6 which comes from pasta and potatoes.

    • @margoac9476
      @margoac9476 6 лет назад

      Paul C I am sorry, but like I stated, I NEVER recommend something off the cuff without backup research. Imo saw a top notch cancer nutritionist for quite some time and still see a highly skilled leading nutritionist biweekly. Also, with my serious health issues I get extensive blood tests done to meaesure literally all aspects of nutriton, including every vitamin, mineral, protein balance and nutrient there is. Right now, nothing including b12 is off.....also, I'm really trying not to come off sounding rude here, but I clearly don't think you read all of my comment, because if you did, you'd notice I DID NOT advocate for an all plant diet! I know my comments are long, but I also (for rather unfortunate reasons I didn't want to divulge deeply) DO happen to know all too well, EXACTLY what I'm talking about, here. And you're right! Omega fatty acids need supplementing in to one's diet daily!

    You should get to go coffee cup. You would save so much plastic and paper. Plus when you're finally making coffee at home you will have a convenient caffeine vessel. As for weight loss, my first experience was a few years ago. I worked a gym membership and trainer into my very small budget. Even struggling with my diabetes while exercising i managed to lose about 10 pounds. I was feeling pretty good physically, I was in awe I could run upstairs and not be out of breath. I wasn't a fan of all the comments noticing my weight loss though. I felt like it was a slap in the face, like hey you weren't as attractive 10 pounds ago, let me tell you how great you look now. I know that's a really odd response that most people don't have, but I really was doing it for my own reasons and I didn't feel like anyone should feel the need to comment on it. No one says anything when you gain 10 pounds. Anyway I left my job and lost my work out partner and fell off the bandwagon and gained it all back and a little. I just have so many other health priorities I should be working on that I can't be bothered right now. Long ramble done!

    Maybe you can research on low carb diets. It has been the best thing that happened to me in the past 25 years regarding my health. I can now eat what I want, especially natural things like butter and bacon and avocados, and lose weight every single week, and the weight loss is permanent. There is no bouncing back unless you start to eat high carbs again. I know is difficult for some, and living in Paris it might be more so with so much sweet stuff, but I also heard that European bread and pastries are much better quality than in the US so it might not hurt you so much. And is difficult just the first couple of weeks, until you adjust your cravings. After that is super easy.
    I know that it worked for you, but counting calories don't really serve much for your weight loss, and the proof is that you said yourself that you felt horrible, but it was good in the end because you lose all the weight. But what if I can tell you that you can still lose the weight and not feel hungry between meals? In fact, you'll be doing fewer meals during the day, so more time to work or explore around. Pretty convenient for long-haul flights.
    Nowadays I do one meal a day during the week, and two or three meals on weekends. No snacking. I cut my sugar intake almost to zero, yeah, I know, Macarons, Petit Pain Au Chocolat, etc., etc. Well, when I go there, I will be eating those so you can have your "cheat" days from time to time, but during most of your week you can adhere to the diet and keep losing weight and feeling great consistently.
    Check it out. Highly recommended. Here are a couple tips: look for Dr. Jason Fung and Dr. Eric Berg here in RUclips.

      And the media does a lot to add to these labels.. There are so many woman that have eating disorders because they have been brainwashed into thinking that they will only be accepted if they weigh less that 100 pounds. Fashion designers also don't help with their size zero clothing and they do not even think about designing fashionable clothing for those who are a plus size..

    • @margoac9476
      @margoac9476 6 лет назад

      sigh47 can I just chime in from the opposite end of RFD spectrum...because of very serious health issues that thank God, I'm now thankfully moving past after years of struggle, I'm still seeing a regular nutritionist and saw a highly trained cancer nutritioni specialist for being severely underweight and at times, malnourished. I rarely get the chance to say a damn thing about it, even if my body discomfort is VERY REAL, even if in the past, it kept me from every form of relationship because I lacked confidence in myself...and had me so messed up, I sequestered myself so securely and deeply in my mind, that it till me YEARS of mental AND INTENSE physical therapy to break loose from my own hibernation to begin to start leading my own semblance of a life yet again...after graduating from college and in the middle of grad school applications and everything so all this to say both ladies and gentlemen, whether too fat or too thin, balding, too short, too tall, too tan, thick, or pale WHAT EVER it may be...DON'T think that you're ALONE in that physical image struggle! And trust me, it's more internal than you think, so seek help, before it gets too late. And please, for the love of everything good and light in this world- don't judge anyone! You just absolutely never know. And I promise that this is this last comment I'll ever make on that...I'm sorry Jay, for eating up so much space here. I just have to thank you and let you know, watching your vlogs inspired me to come out if my hole and start living again
