The guy beginning at 1:13 did it right - deep fade left, long sweeping, full arc bottom turn & then pulled up into that short barrel. Well done!

*I used to position my seat on the jet when flying to the Hawaii islands many a big winter swell, just to look down at some huge perfect points and reefs around the Channel Islands.*
*Always wondered what it was like, but never really wanted to put myself into the food chain there.*

    • @K38rescue

It catches currents off the tip of the island, it's not a wave to compare to the continental shelf surfing locations because of its location. A bit shifty and not as defined as other breaks, but that is what makes it interesting. The drag is a long way on the undersea mount. It's a beautiful place and not easy to get to, right outside a sanctuary area. A few outstanding surfers enjoyed this location for several decades, one being Brownie, but the winds are always not in favor of a good surf session. Thanks for a great comment!

There have been very few shark attacks at the Channel Islands and it's not so different than anywhere else in CA. Good to know there are people out there like you who are so afraid and take a pass. - 35 years of C.I. experience here.

@@MikeListon-tk8ir *Stoked you're stoked, it's your spot, wouldn't have it any other way.*
*Not really "afraid", surfed with many sharks from 2ft. to Jaws size, in many places during my 40+ years of surfing.*
*Never got chased out, pushed off the small ones, and kept my limbs out of the water with the big ones until they left.*
*I've been in the ocean since infancy, as a surfer, diver, lifeguard, born from parents of the same, and tuned into nature, it's my life.*
*But just like I turned down Cortes Bank, I felt like C.I. would be pressing my luck.*
*I've found my favorite spots for minimum time wasted, and maximum pleasure, so you can factor that in.*
*The longest amount of time I'd waste, would be a boat out to Todos, or a jet to Hawaii, hell I've had similar yet better waves than this video reveals on San Diego reefs!*
*But I wonder why you say "Good to know there are people out there like you who are so afraid and take a pass"?..for one you don't know me at all, (although, never know, same surf era), but what, is it getting crowded out there or something, or was your two cents just keeping up with the common blusterous ScrewTube commentary??*

Seeing it miles away gave you the chills knowing that wave is badd.....ass.

Mavericks is recognized throughout the world surfing community as one of the heaviest waves on the planet arguably the heaviest wave which number #1 is open to debate and personal opinion as to whether it is Mavs, Jaws, Nazare (biggest), Shipsterns, Ghost Trees, Cortez Bank, Belharra, Todos Santos, etc. Mavericks is one of the most popular big wave surf spots on the planet attracting the best big wave surfers from all around the world. @freesoul3371 buddy calm down... I've surfed my whole life, lived my whole life in california... was state champ my senior year surfing nssa...
But go ahead and insult people because you think you're right.
Have you surfed either place? "Heaviness" of a wave is much different from just size... a 10 ft teahupo'o is way heavier than 15 or 20 ft mavericks... (which besides maybe an insane shipsterns, to me is the heaviest wave in the world per size) could be easily the same with this place. Wouldn't know unless you go. But the place looks like it breaks on quite a heavy slab.

The waves are so heavy, and dangerous, but the great whites populate any area with seals, only a matter of time, if surfers start showing up in numbers, jaws might put and end to this area.

    • @K38rescue
      @K38rescue  3 года назад

Great comment and true. The wildlife is thick up there. I don't think it will get numbers because it takes so much effort to get there and the winds and weather own it. Easier access breaks on the mainland, not so expensive to go to, but for the soul surfers, they've been here a long time. Thanks for watching
