    In September of 2001, Disney was approaching final cut on Lilo & Stitch - a children's film set for release in early 2002. The climax of the film initially featured Stitch piloting a 747 through a fictional Hawaiian city. But that urban backdrop was replaced with a mountainous backdrop, and the aircraft was re-worked to look like an alien spacecraft.
    The changes were informed by the shift in the mood in America following the terrorist attacks on 9/11. Disney wasn't alone in their obligation to rework content to a more appropriate tone for a nation still reeling from the attacks. Children's shows like Power Rangers, Pokemon, and Invader Zim had episodes taken off the air due to scenes where buildings and cityscapes were destroyed.
    The nation had changed, and the national conversation facilitated by popular culture had changed alongside it. To trace these developments in greater detail, read this write-up from Lindsay Ellis: www.vox.com/2016/9/9/12814898...

      @mayday Disney used a software method called deep canvas throughout animated movies starting in 1999. These movies are not only hand drawn but CG.

    • @Wolfmasterpixel
      @Wolfmasterpixel 5 лет назад +16

      @mayday so you googled deep canvas, huh? Lol. Any image rendered on a computer is CG. This film was rendered on a computer and thus is CG. Older disney films were shot frame by frame by camera and cut together, but this one was rendered digitally.
      Computer graphics are pictures and films created using computers. Usually, the term refers to computer-generated image data created with the help of specialized graphical hardware and software. It is a vast and recently developed area of computer science. The phrase was coined in 1960, by computer graphics researchers Verne Hudson and William Fetter of Boeing. It is often abbreviated as CG, though sometimes erroneously referred to as computer-generated imagery (CGI).

    • @Wolfmasterpixel
      @Wolfmasterpixel 5 лет назад +25

      @mayday then you obviously aren't a professional, or you lack an understanding of deep canvas. Deep canvassing is utilizing 3d models and drawing frame by frame around said models. The model itself stays within each rendered frame, having been digitally textured by the artist. The film indeed retains the model. CG.

    Probably unpopular opinion but them using Jumba’s ship actually makes more sense than them stealing a plane. Cause 1) The ship explains how Jumba and Peakley got there and 2) It’s actually really hard to fly a plane at that altitude and it’s a bit weird that Jumba’s able to pull it off that easily. It makes more sense if it’s his ship.

      Even if they had kept the original scene in the movie it wouldn't have made sense since at the beginning of the movie Lilo states that there are no cities on the island she lives on to Stitch. Fun Fact: Monsters Inc was also changed to be more 9/11 sensitive.
    Originally, during the scene in which Boo escapes at the restaurant, the scene would have ended with the building exploding after Mike said his line.

      9/11 really put fear in people to the point of banned things afterwards. But I will say I knew about this infamous scene for years now and I will say this very unnerving. Prior to 9/11, I loved plane rides as a child, the last time before the tragedy was in '98 and didn't ride one again until '09 and let me tell you I was scared out of my mind.

      My comment was a satire of the current political environment. The same fear and family tearing realities occurred with slavery, hatred of homosexuals, and currently with hate speech. The hypocrisy is that people are alright with changing some things, movies with 9/11 style scenes, while others need to be preserved, statues and degrading language. Both hurt people.

    Even if the 911 would never happen before, the original cut version looks pretty terrifying. Imagine being a random guy at the street and suddenly a plane flew sideways around the buildings, damaging glasses with the wheels.
    I better like the finished version too becuase I view Hawaii as a volcanic green beach paradise.

    Not such a bad idea to change it. My dad died the same year Simba's dad died, and that was a coincidentally excessive amount of amplification for a tiny kid in a theater. (Lol, now I want to know who in their right mind took me to see that film?)
    In other words, there's not need to change everything, but a little sympathy can go a long way, when the tragedy is national and not just personal.
    Kudos to disney!

      My mom told me that she was terrified of zombies because her friends took her to see Night of the Living Dead on the one-year anniversary of her mother's passing, and personally I can't watch movies with vomit scenes because of a traumatic incident from when I was a baby that my mom told me about that involved me spitting up in terror onto my grandfather when he yanked me upside down by my ankles.
      It's crazy and weird how our brains process these things, isn't it?

    • @SailorDee
      @SailorDee 2 года назад +55

      They were working on the movie as 9/11 happened. Lilo and stitch were set to release almost precisely on the first anniversary of 9/11 (in 2002, September 6th), so it's not hard to understand why they made sure to edit this scene specifically.
      Plus, Disney didn't buy the Marvel movies until 2009, so anything made before that time had nothing to do with them.

    I think the changes were appropriate. Art exists in the context of it's time, and one cannot simply ignore the context when releasing a piece of media. Releasing the movie in it's original form would have distracted people from the heartwarming story of family which so enriched my childhood.

    its weird. I was born in 2006. I first watched Lilo and Stitch when i was 5, in 2011. I only remember ever watching it with the original scenes. I very vividly remember the plane running around the curve of the building, and I have no memory of the big red spaceship. The icecream guy was also on the street in the version i watched and not in a chair on the beach. I was watching it on CD but I do not know if the original cut ever made it to CD. This is all very confusing.
