I am a mongoloid and I feel that the general public could learn a great deal from this highly illluminating song. Not many people know that my extra chromosome was put there by Ghengis Khan.
i met these guys in tulsa" old lady on brady "show ,they came over to my house and we went to dinner and everyone in the rest,,wanted autographs,,i had NO IDEA how cool they were then,,i was like,,ho-hum,,is a gimmick,,but now, i listened to this LP over and over and over back then,i loved anything different - and this really freaked ppl out in oklahoma-i was all for it.
My favorite thing about Devo; they were so far out of the normal music range and I feel they owe none of it to drugs. Not that I have any feelings against drug-inspired bands (huge Pink Floyd fan,) but Devo has a sort of quirky, dorky punk flow that's so cool and genuine
Good point.Particularly, this song makes me think that, actually, it doesn't require much effort to appear normal in society.Someone with Down Syndrome could be functional, and in society's view, he's ok, since he can accomplish his job. In other words, people will not react to somebody's behavior or handicaps as long as he seems to do correctly what he's told to do.We conclude that what really worth here is sufficiency, and not anything else (sorry for the macaronic English,I need to train it)
@draculascoffin check out a guy named Von Elmo. He was doing what could best be described as a mashup of Devo and industrial rock a few years before Devo hit. He was bigger in Europe than here. Sadly, he became a heroin addict . I used to see him in the East Village a lot a few years ago. He heard me playing and would talk of getting clean and starting a band with me. I never held my breath. Don't know if he's alive or dead. Talented guy, sad story.
Back in the day, this was THE song to listen to. Edgy, not afraid of repercussions, etc. But nowadays I need to speak to a social therapist after singing this. Dafuq society?
I love this video! DEVO at this time were basically a punk band that was too punk to be "punk". Totally forward thinking, and equally as socially challenging as the punk pioneers had been just ~5 years earlier. I guess that's why we called it New Wave.
As a man who suffers from Down's Syndrom, I find this song highly offensive. And yet somehow, Devo always rates higher on the charts than Menudo. Why? Why? Why?
@draculascoffin Speaking of a band that was before their time, look into The Brains. Recorded on the soon to be bankrupted Mercury records and produced some great music, also in '79.
These guys strum their hot huitars and synth-out the keyboardz while one pops and thumps a storm and they all hop around and sweat bulletz ...and not one line of crystal meth nor cocaine-kola through a straw - yay-brother...Weren't the nineteeneighties wonderful?- yah achtung, zee heer!
To quote the in-famous psychopath of the tennis court, John McEnroe: "You cannot be serious, man. The ball was in..!". (Ghengis Khan was the clue..? LMFAO). Normal? What..? Boring as watching sheep chewing the cud. (FYI: My brother Howard promoted Devo in the UK when he worked as a rep. for EMI, touring the radio stations. They are beyond cool. They are so 'far out' man, there 'in' - a quote from the 1960's TV show 'Rowan and Martin's Laugh In' - way.. way.. way before your time). ;-)
Use of a deeply Racist insult Mongoloid is a racial grouping of various peoples indigenous to large parts of Asia, the Americas, and some regions in Europe and Oceania. The term is derived from a theory of biological hereditary of physical features race. In the past, other terms such as "Mongolian race", "yellow", "Asiatic" and "Oriental" have been used as synonyms. It has its roots from describing oriental eyes as looking similar to the eyes of a person whom as be born with Downs Syndrome.
i'm not sure if you're trolling, especially with that genghis khan thing, but maybe listen to the lyrics there... it's actually more like anti-discriminatory...
Devo was way ahead of their time !! You got to remember in 1979 disco was king and Devo was doing this !! It would work today
For some reason, the distortion, muffled audio and even the fact it's sped up makes this work
Very much so
...& he wore a hat & he had a job & he brought home the bacon... 1 of the best punk songs ever. their keyboard sound is off the hook!
I am a mongoloid and I feel that the general public could learn a great deal from
this highly illluminating song. Not many people know that my extra chromosome was put there by Ghengis Khan.
Love this song! My fav from Devo
something about this version, the fact that the first part of the keyboard actually pitch shifts more than usual makes it extra awesome.
Classic Devo. Great band. So many good songs!
Nice nice Devo never gets old
I loved the song at first "sight". Ages ago. Till now.
Every time I hear this song, I don my honorary DEVO energy dome, and go crazy all over suburbia. FUCK YEAH DEVO RULES!!!
I liked this song so much I had my DNA altered.
Devo. Zeppelin. AC/DC. I'm pretty convinced that the 1970's were the peak of human music.
That's right

This is AMAZING.
Akron was the place for new music in the late 70s. Devo, Waitresses, rubber City Rebels, pretenders, so many more....glad to have been there

pure classic. i think devo still tours
WTF? They rocked it out in Newport Beach a few weeks ago. They still have "it" and you'd be surprised!
Dammit, I was JUST trying to look up Mongoloid to make sure I was spelling it right and now this song is gonna be stuck in my head forever!
"Ex-Drummer" soundtrack. Great movie!!!
This song brings out my inner child, as well as my outer child.
Glad to see a kid these days who knows his $hit and isn't all consumed with pop/hip hop. good for you!
Fun fact! The androsynth from star control 2 their victory tune is a riff from this song
Back in the day, this was THE song to listen to. Edgy, not afraid of repercussions, etc. But nowadays I need to speak to a social therapist after singing this. Dafuq society?
Thank you VERY much!
devo is really evo

There's old school, and then there's old school. Nice.

The sound is very similar to Joy Division,s She,s lost control.
What ever happened to Alan Myers, the original drummer? He was a work horse!
My dad says George Bush is a Mongoloid. I didn't know he was born in Mongolia.
I so like this song at a faster tempo, it just moves.

I dedicate this to you RUclips.
First song I learned on bass too !
@ostrichfriend some people don't take into account that it might actually be a really hard job... Hey, Devo!
I found that on accident just because I love Finnish Punk, very interesting version!
Thank you.
Perfect Sincro
@NightNurseBetty Demented is my very Fav!!
And it determined what he could see. I wish more people could step into others' shoes

@BlairWitchSucks that song really does go with the film, (cos it pretty goddamn mental)

Oh. What is correlation between"De-evolution", & the suits?
Man or Astro man got inspired by Devo big time
Yes, Mark is one hott potato!
They never topped the 1st album which was still very very punk
This is SO Ramons
@ Tomas De Soete, te weinig op de radio... remember 2010 op de radio 300km file...
This song invented post punk
The only drug addiction I'm aware of in Devo is Bob 1. He admitted to abusing cocaine in the 80's.
Cool
I remember calling people MONG when I was a kid. Guess it was inspired by these guys 😂
Wouldn't it be funny if there was a DEVOVEVO?
thisis a way cooler version than the studio
Oh God, why'd you have to go and ask that crap?
Right on. I would urge you to think about that reasoning though. The fact is that we all use drugs.
This needs to be slow down to it's original speed
Did I just hear some harmonies?
this is great stuff....although it's pretty good with Demented are Go too. But this is the original version isn't it???
@chuckydelinquent great dad!

240p, Here we meet again!
This band are wasted on the ignorants. Wish I heard them sooner.
This song got me into devo. Whip it just didn't do it for me.
I wonder if they were the ones who introduced the POGO dance
fraink7 Seriously?? That would be Sid Vicious 😂😂
haha I'd only known DAG version up till now

There are a ton of great Finnish bands. Circle rocks!
If you think this song is about barak obama, like this comment.
What does DEVO stand for?
LOL look up Dick Ho on youtube and this song plays in the video
@draculascoffin Yee.. No.
Rush is highly talented. Unless you are talking about limbaugh.
@joe martin
Are you nuts.
is that les paul ... melted ?
i'm not sure if you're trolling, especially with that genghis khan thing, but maybe listen to the lyrics there... it's actually more like anti-discriminatory...
But not until later on in their careers, I think. At least their early, VERY weird stuff seems pretty non-drug to me.
Playback .95
i would dig this a lot more if it wernt so repetitive..
@youdave777 yeah, wasn't he still just a drunk/coke head when they released this.
@DavidDelGato Comparing George Bush to people with Down's Syndrome is an insult to people with Down's Syndrome.
Actually, no. Devo were very into cocaine.
Чо?
@DavidDelGato like you could do a better job?
well, unlike that other guy, i'm very sure about you..
everyone knows you're trolling...
i like mongoloid better by rummelsnuff :D
