if you are interested in actually learning about truck gearing and optimizing gear reduction. google "peak volumetric efficiency". most truck drivers think "more RPM = more fuel consumption" and of course "if you lower your RPM you get better MPG" this is not true. It is a much more complex function then changing gears = makes truck awesome. Anyone offering this advice, please counter by asking " how do you calculate PVE? there is quick explanations online, lengthy explanations and even calculators to solve the equation all set up for you.
I was about to reply similarly. Gear the truck so that the motor is turning RPMs in the "sweet spot" of power and torque. Your 3.55 gear might be turning the motor at 2K RPM at 70. A 4.10 gear might have you at 2.4K at 70. The higher RPM very well could be a more efficient RPM for your motor and efficiency is key. If the motor is laboring to maintain hiway speeds, you are burning fuel unnecessarily. And you may not even be able to feel it. Lower ratio doesn't yield more power. It gives a better mechanical advantage. A fun experiment would be to check your fuel economy in 6th (it is a 6 speed auto, right?) for a tank and then try manually shifting it into 5th and leave it for a tank. Then compare mileage. If the economy is about the same, your truck is laboring a bit in high gear. If fuel economy goes down, then you are golden ... don't change a thing. If fuel economy goes up, well you can most certain benefit from a gear change. But then, that points to a cost benefit analysis. If a gear swap cost your $3,000 and gains you 2 or 3 mpg, how many gallons does that save in a week? How many miles do you have to drive in order to save $3K in fuel? Finally, if your rig is 4WD, you'll have to match the front and rear gear sets. ... if you swap rear gears to 4.10, you'll need to swap the front gear set as well. Another solution might be to find 1" shorter tires. That will also change your final drive ratio without swapping gears. Or ... just turn up the radio, enjoy the view and don't worry about it. Love the channel and like hearing your real world commentary on this line of work.
If the bed is not removed, the length of the bed is added to the overall length of the rig. Example: if the pickup truck and trailer add up to 73', the bed will be added to that length. The DOT will consider it being capable of carrying cargo. Giving an overall length of 81' (if the bed is an 8' bed).
Very good point! I worked on 18 wheelers for years. I worked on bulk milk carriers, out on country dirt roads the rear tires would be exposed when turning and rocks would kick up and break out the back glass. It's a huge mess in the cab for one. And if you are sleeping in that rear seat area your bed will be full of glass shards. It would be a good idea to put a full fender on. Little more trouble changing a tire but saves a lot of trouble!! Plus, good luck anyone having a back window for a new truck in stock. I wouldn't want to ride around for a week with a taped up back window!

The rear end is 3.55 because it's 4 wheel drive. It has to match the front ratio. If it was just rear wheel you could get 3.71 rear, and get electronic locking rear to not "get stuck".

I disagree Kevin, hotshot, just as any other self-employed start up business, is WHAT YOU MAKE OF IT. If one doesn't find a way to cut costs, streamline, make the most of the miles, keep the business in good standing with everyone, then one may find themselves drowning in operating costs and tired of the whole thing. Running a business is a job in and of itself, then add on 2-4k miles per week of driving, it can get exhausting and tedious. Don't start hotshot to become a millionaire, start it to start a business, have freedom, and work for yourself.
You are a very smart hard working woman. Really like the set up of your truck. I am getting my CDL and getting ready to jump into Hotshot, scared and fun at the same time.
Love the honesty in your videos. And yes 3.55 on a 6.7PS is plenty of gearing unless your pulling crazy heavy at which point you should probably be in a F450 or F550. Once again love the videos
Has to do with length laws. Truck with bed is to long for a pickup truck set up. She removed the bed to be classified (under dot ) as a tractor. She can now run under tractor trailer length laws.
So from what I am reading in the comments as I am in Oregon and we know what a Pickup is, You took the bed off so it's considered a tractor not a Pickup? I am so glad I will never live in Cal. I would either leave the bed or put a full size flatbed on it. Sorry I just don't understand why you would take the bed off. Hope your family is well.

Awesome setup, I think with the tool boxes measure on top of your deck next to the fuel tank and see if you can install a box on top on ether side of the tank on your deck instead of under it, white plastic fenders would look killer on this!! nice job!
I believe you were renting a truck before for your runs? So now you bought a new truck to own? Is the jury out yet on what is better cost wise in comparison of the two? Just curious, Thanks.
You know how it is, everyone has an opinion... Would you rather rent a house and not be responsible for repairs, or buy a house, be responsible for it, and own it after a specific amount of time?
Thank you for all your support, first off!! Enterprise for 65k miles, which took me 9 months. I returned the truck and was hot to purchase my own right away. My new truck has 8k on it, it's been less than 2 months. I love my truck and I made the right decision for my business to purchase.
the ford 6.7 with the ten speed transmission will make up for any problems with the higher gears. the horse power and torque have pretty much doubled since the old 7.3 diesels. and going from four gears up to ten makes a big difference. I believe it's the first diesel ford has made itself before them they bought from navistar.
We had to postpone our start cause of everything going on in the country, I worked at Diamond C manufacturing company in Mt.Pleasant, Texas and plan to run one of their trailers which have the engineer beam instead of the traditional i-beam, was just looking at ur insight on the axels from someone that has been on the road for miles

I’m thinking you have already discovered with the gooseneck trailer your going to need something over your rear tires to keep everything from getting covered with road grime
Yes you're right! I'm going to have original fenders fabricated and installed, I don't like those plastic ones, they look like they won't last long, and way over priced for plastic. Just my opinion y'all!
Hey Bryan, yeah I didn't want direct, didn't want to mess with the lines, and this way if something isn't working right, I can tell right away, there's no guessing involved. I know a lot of guys have everything hooked up to direct feed, but I did what I did purposely.
Benefit is to please a dickhead DPS officer who uses the grey area of the law to interpret it as he/she sees it in order to write a ticket. In many states if you have a bed on the truck they can consider it as able to hold cargo and that makes your truck a truck and you want it to be considered a tractor not a truck. Tractors pull... trucks carry.

5ft? Omg I have even more respect for you then before. Before was high lol. You tackle these jobs and don’t let anything stand in your way. Great job. Lots of women will feel they can do this watching the way you handle yourself. You gals are a great example. Thank you
I wonder why you didn’t extend the platform out over the wheels? Aren’t you required to have fenders covering the rear duals? Won’t the tires throw mud, rocks, snow up all over the back window and pit the back of the cab? Nice truck & good luck!
Hi was wondering do u have a cdl..if so do u like doing hotshot better..seems like better money an less bs... thanks, I'm looking to possibley do a chang up and am very interested in this, I just happened onto ur videos..lucky me...:)
You don't run plates on the front?
Yes I have my plate in front
The rear end is 3.55 because it's 4 wheel drive. It has to match the front ratio. If it was just rear wheel you could get 3.71 rear, and get electronic locking rear to not "get stuck".
I heard you had a daughter, how do you do it, with work, and being a parent. Im a single dad from so cal with cdl wanting to get in the bizz.
My daughter is 16 already...she goes to school online so she can run with me most of the time. It's a lot, but we all make it work out somehow. I'm proof it can be done, but it's a lot
@@HotshotAdventures thank you for replying, my daughter is 8 and i dont want my parents to be getting her ready taking her to school and all that, its my responsibility, and i do want to start trucking soon!! Hopefully i find a way to take my daughter with me hot shotting
I hear ya, my mom spent a couple years doing that for my daughter, which I'm grateful for, because mom is the only one outside of myself I would want standing in my place holding a parental role, in my absence.
Imagine if you didn't have your parents, how things could potentially be.
I am getting my CDL and getting ready to jump into Hotshot, scared and fun at the same time.
do you mind telling me what size mudflaps and brackets those are? just got my new 2020 ford and I'm taking the bed off as well. thanks
Love the honesty in your videos. And yes 3.55 on a 6.7PS is plenty of gearing unless your pulling crazy heavy at which point you should probably be in a F450 or F550. Once again love the videos
Thank you so much! I agree with you completely 💯
Nice setup !
Most over the road truck tags are on the front bumper, with no light .
That's a bummer that you were given a false time line on when your truck was to be finished! They lost a valuable customer
That’s ridiculous about the license plate light!! Picky, nothing else to do DOT fool. Wow 😳. ✌️
Awesome Nataly. 👍👍👍👍👍
Thanks chax
Why not leave the bed on? What is the advantage of not having it? Seems costly to remove.
Joe Pac she commented in another video that wanted to safe with Total Length for truck and trailer.
Has to do with length laws. Truck with bed is to long for a pickup truck set up. She removed the bed to be classified (under dot ) as a tractor. She can now run under tractor trailer length laws.
@@AtuMan190 whaddya mean?
@@AtuMan190 explain yourself friend
Robert B she registered it as a tractor, (power unit) so laws different and only measures the front of her truck as actual length not the rear chassis
I need a hay elevator brought back from malta il, to grand junction co. If your going that way
If you removed the bed, put a fifth wheel on it, dot like it more, and they don't bother you much.
She is being in Compliance with DOT, California is different than Oregon.
Y did u remove the bed aren't the new ones aluminum? Lightweight?
Nice truck!! What size are your tarps and where did you get them?
Michael you are the second person within 4 hours to ask about my tarps - and both requests are not the first. I better do a vid on them - there is a wide variety to choose from, a video might be better suited to answer you guys. Stay tuned, I'll release asap
@@HotshotAdventures thank you
@@HotshotAdventures looking for one thats a good size without weighing alot. Too heavy to deal with. Lol
I will say this, mine are definately too heavy! And they were also way too big, so I cut them! :) Running off of partials, I needed a smaller tarp anyway, but I'm glad I got heavy duty tarps, they dont rip, and they will last forever.
What is the reason for taking the bed off of hotshot trucks?
Hey love videos. Please order some custom fenders with built in tail lights
How much did you pay? The aluminum bed is so light 2 people can lift it off
Two people did lift the bed off my truck--one was me! 💪🔥
Duravis R500 is the tire I like
I'll check them out thx
@@HotshotAdventures Duravis R700 is a more aggressive tread that makes more noise than I like. I prefer the R500. I usually get around 110k miles out of a set
Some advice get rear wheel fenders plastic incase of rock damage put locks on your tank and pump install a cover from the ball to the rear of the frame to protect any wires or anything else that could be damage use the tires you have just make sure you maintain air pressure and the key is to maintain the truck and trailer inspection is important get under it and check everything looks like you have room for a lockbox on the passenger side for your tarps and straps
Thanks for the input bud
Awesome setup, I think with the tool boxes measure on top of your deck next to the fuel tank and see if you can install a box on top on ether side of the tank on your deck instead of under it, white plastic fenders would look killer on this!! nice job!
Good suggestions Frank! Thanks for your input
Seems like running the tires is a smart move. Get your money out of everything. I really like your channel, it's good to see you sharing. God bless.
Thank you!
Why did you remove your bed?
Need CDL - A ?
What happened to your enterprise rental?
Needs some fenders.
Hi I’ve been thinking bout getting into hotshotting, but why was the reason you deleted your factory bed?
the Truck Bed will hit the Trailer when turning, plus I believe CHP can give her a ticket?? So it makes her trucking easier.
You need fenders
how long did u use enterprise and when did you get your own truck and why
Thank you for all your support, first off!! Enterprise for 65k miles, which took me 9 months. I returned the truck and was hot to purchase my own right away.
My new truck has 8k on it, it's been less than 2 months. I love my truck and I made the right decision for my business to purchase.
Stay strong
Man up
Do you need the three running lights on the back of the truck? I thought that was a regulation? But its been 20 year that I ran a truck.
She does since the truck is over 80” wide.
the ford 6.7 with the ten speed transmission will make up for any problems with the higher gears. the horse power and torque have pretty much doubled since the old 7.3 diesels. and going from four gears up to ten makes a big difference. I believe it's the first diesel ford has made itself before them they bought from navistar.
Excellent info Stan, I believe you are right, first year Ford making their engines themselves. Thanks!
@@HotshotAdventures 2011 is when they started making the 6.7. hey bet you can't guess who the ford guy is in the room? have fun drive safe
Why did you remove the bed why not leave it on ? Other than weight.
It would make the whole setup longer because it’s capable of hauling cargo.
Nice set up

Aurora Hotshot Enterprises : Natty have u had any problems with ur axles, am guessing that u running oil bath on ur trailer
Grease, and I don't have any issues. Haven't heard anything great about oil baths, what do you run?
We had to postpone our start cause of everything going on in the country, I worked at Diamond C manufacturing company in Mt.Pleasant, Texas and plan to run one of their trailers which have the engineer beam instead of the traditional i-beam, was just looking at ur insight on the axels from someone that has been on the road for miles
The fuel filler handle is going to brake your back window, the way its just hanging from the rubber cord. just saying
Maybe it's just the angle of the video, because I've had it like that for a year and it doesn't bounce and touch the window. But I may do a direct feed in the near future. Thank you for sharing your concern
I enjoy your channel you keep your content informative, and positive, thank you.
Ever think about having the fuel direct-hookup?
Hey Bryan, yeah I didn't want direct, didn't want to mess with the lines, and this way if something isn't working right, I can tell right away, there's no guessing involved. I know a lot of guys have everything hooked up to direct feed, but I did what I did purposely.

What are the benefits of removing the bed?
Benefit is to please a dickhead DPS officer who uses the grey area of the law to interpret it as he/she sees it in order to write a ticket. In many states if you have a bed on the truck they can consider it as able to hold cargo and that makes your truck a truck and you want it to be considered a tractor not a truck. Tractors pull... trucks carry.
