- Throughout their lives, siblings experience many of the same challenges as parents of children with health and mental health diagnoses, as well as situations that are unique to being a sibling. In addition, siblings often share the longest lasting relationships in their families. Because they are the longest lasting family relationship, they most likely are the primary caregivers for their brothers and sisters with mental health challenges later in life. This presentation will share information on common sibling dynamics and feature a panel of true experts: adults reflecting back on their experiences growing up with a sibling needing support. Learning more about siblings and how supporting these family members can contribute to lasting positive outcomes for entire families.
Event Learning Objectives:
1) Participants will be able to identify five unique experiences by siblings supporting their family members who are experiencing mental health or substance use challenges.
2) Participants will be able to identify five unique opportunities experienced by siblings providing support.
3) Participants will have knowledge of five strategies to minimize the concerns of siblings and maximize opportunities to support their own mental health and well-being.
