Whimsical Cats Paint-Along - Painted Willow Art

- Where are my cat people?? In this video we're going to create a circle of whimsical cats! We'll look at an easy way to draw the cats, a few different watercolor technique options, and of course - doodles and adding a touch of whimsy! Video runs about an hour, but you can start and stop along the way if you wish - you don't have to do it all in one sitting. And....if you don't have watercolors, you can make this with colored pencils, marker, crayons.....anything like that.
Video is a little blurry in some spots during the initial drawing because my camera's autofocus went screwy, and I didn't realize it until edit, and I didn't have time to re-record. I think you still get the idea of what we're doing, and the focus problem goes away while we're painting.

✏️ Supplies Needed ✏️
I have only provided specific links for the things that can't be found at any art/craft supply store, and I do not get commission on anything I recommend - these are just the supplies I love. If there's no link, it means you can get it at just about any art / craft supply store and I always recommend looking locally first.
Paper: I usually use Strathmore 400 acrylic paper, but for watercolor, any watercolor paper will work.
Pens: Love Sharpies, but generally any waterfast pen will work (Sakura Pigma Micron pens are excellent and don't smear with water)
Watercolor: My most used sets are Josie Lewis (www.josielewis...) and Art Philosophy Co. Watercolor Confections sets (www.artphiloso...) - in this video I use a little bit of everything. The metallics are by Artistic Isle (www.artisticis...) and Tiny Cactus Designs (www.etsy.com/s...)
Tape: I prefer Washi tape 1" wide - generally available at any art/craft store, but you an use painter's tape as well.
Eraser: Because people ask! :) I love the Pentel Hi-Polymer white erasers
Paint Pens: Uni Posca
White Pen: UniBall Signo White Gel Pen

I love the whimsical side of life. It always puts a smile on my face. It's also my favorite style to paint in! I love cats and find them whimisical anyhow.Mine makes me laugh all of the time with all of his jokes and silliness!😺😻♥️
Thank you for this. Not being very artistic I decided to try this. I drew out the cats, erasing them a few times and they looked an ugly mess by the time they were drawn but I thought I would paint them anyways and keep on going. So I got out my watercolours and painted them. Still looked like a hot mess then I outlined them and put on their faces and they came to life. I'm so glad I finshed and they turned out awesome!! Sometimes you just have to trust the process!! Thank you so much for all of your Paint Alongs!
I'm so happy you trusted the process and kept going. Sometimes that "ugly middle" stage is hard to get past. But isn't it amazing how a little outline or enhancement can change the whole thing? I love that! Thanks for watching & painting along.💖💖💖

I like my cat but I love your cats too!! Great fun with cats. I have a Cornish Rex he was on his leash today and still jumped over the porch fence and caught a chipmunk we rescued it out of Pi’s mouth and it ran away. Luckily Pi only has two teeth. Ha! 😅

I've been practicing drawing the circle of cats for about 3wks. I only began with water colors on July 1! I'm a true beginner! Tonight I cut my 9x9 square and drew out the pattern. I'm here to tell ya, it's not easy! It took me just over 2 1/5hrs to get my kitty cats painted. I'll wait until tomorrow to do the faces and doodles. So far I've painted some whimsy birds and trees and tonite the the cats. This is NOT an easy task!

Great explanations. You can “pounce” with a kneads or eraser to lighten pencil lines. A lot of people are too heavy handed with rubber erasers and it abrades the paper.

Thanks! On this one, I didn't end up putting anything in the middle but you could put doodles, words - pretty much anything you want. You could even cut out someone's picture and glue it on in the center!😁💙💙💙

Thanks Collette! I first tried watercolor in high school HATED it. Didn't pick it up again for about 30 yrs! I finally realized I just had to let go of some control where watercolor is concerned and I've been in love with ever since. That's part of the reason I started doing these videos. I wanted fun projects to let people play with watercolor without getting too serious about it and maybe, just maybe, someone else might fall in love too.❤️

I absolutely love the stuff you make. I have just bought some watercolors, but we aren't seeing eye to eye. I seem to get it too wet or too dry, and my paints laugh at me.
Mine do the same sometimes! 😂😂😂😂 The best thing I can tell you is just use the paints. Practice painting just splotches of color with different amounts of water. Each manufacturer...and each paint color...is different. You can best get to know their personalities by just using them a lot. Even paper can make a difference. Maybe even making notes like "(color name) works best with less water" or "(color name) spreads & mixes better with a little more water, but it granuates". I have tons of scraps and notes on all the colors I use. They seem to be friendlier and laugh at me less when I take the time to get to know them by just using them lots - and you don't have e to have a specific project going. Just make splotches, test the amount of water and play with how they blend with other colors. And give up all hope of making them play nice for a bit. Let them be their unruly selves and see if that helps.

@infiniteawareness2698 Honestly - It's just me & my cell phone camera recording these. Idea in mind but no script. It may just have been that I was thinking while talking & that's just what my hand did. 🤷♀️. Sorry if my reply felt snarky. I (and all people putting stuff out publicly) get some of the strangest interactions sometimes. The word "fondling" may have made me a little defensive because I've had some of those strange interactions start with words like that. Perfectly valid word, but also one that gets used maliciously sometimes. Forgive me for being defensive if your question was honest. 🤎
I love this video and can’t wait to give it a try. Can you tell me what kind of board your paper was taped to? I’ve been trying to figure out what’s best to use.
Hi Michele! I think in this video I had it taped to a glass cutting board. Those really are my favs. However, I often use a canvas board as well. Both are nice and portable so I can paint wherever I want, but they still provide support. And you can get both in different sizes to fit the paper you use. If you are going to paint with a TON of water, I'd recommend the cutting board, because canvas board is paper backed, so it can warp with lots of water.

I have made a couple of videos, and to reduce the shaking of the camera, I attach the holder to something other than my table.
I've been experimenting with that....it's just me and my cell phone, so I'll get it figured out. Thanks for the suggestion!
