I gave up my wood-gas-lawn-mower-project 3 years ago after 2 years experimenting as I was convinced it is impossible with an engine that small. You did it ! You are the man! GREAT!
Great job. If I had to live off grid I would have one of these powering my generator to light my house. I give instructions in my book Extreme Survival Pocket Guide on how to build a gasifier. I don't separate the tanks like that but I allow the gas to cool through the use of a long tube.
Very nice. 2 questions: 1. What are you using in the grey barrel for filter media? 2. What is the flexible tube running from the filter to the engine? I started out using vacuum cleaner hose and quickly melted it!
First, I've heard wood gas can gum up an engine. What do you do to prevent that? Second, is there a way to compress the wood gas into something like a propane tank for later use? It seems like it might be more convenient to spend one whole day burning wood and compressing the gas into tanks, then just run for the next month using the tanks.
looking at the set up, looks as though you could easily set that up, to run an electric generator. would really like to get the spec's on your set, diagram, etc. Looking to do something similar. ty
great video people need to get used to using other forms of energy.. while gas will rise in price as inflation hits. I saw something like this on a netflix tv show. I cant remember the name but the whole point of the show was to survive with limited resources and they had a whole generator hooked up with it to a alternator then they put on another alternator to bumb up the juice put out. great job
If you can get your hands on a small propane carburetor for a generator or a forklift it should work with wood gas. It will keep the air/fuel mixture the same at different rpm's and different amounts of engine load.
You made it look so simple!! Is the gas coming out burns with a blue flame? Thank you for posting! Did you follow a specific instructable how to make it or did you came up with your own design?
NICE ONE! I built a wood chip burner before. It would burn shredded trees & limbs. It would even eat up leaves. I'd stuff the 100# propane cylinder hopper with anything! I'm quite certain it was converting the water to hydrogen and then burning the gas. I suspect that's what your doing as well Thanks
Does the air inlet flow through the cheery pits? As viewed in the top of the 50 gallon drum? I'm trying to understand this and would like to do this at my cottage to power a generator.
Great Vid - this technology would be ideal for running a generator say if you were subsistence living in the middle of a forest. Fuel for your electricity would be all around you!
that is excellent brainstorming to come up with that process i just wished you could have gone into a little bit more detail of the process and also :how much grass can you cut with such a short hose?" LOL
very cool! but how will you drag those tanks around while you cut the grass? Maybe you should power a generator and charge some batteries or something.
first question what am i using in the grey barrel for a filter? saw dust and wood chips. second question what kind of tube am i using? i am using a vacuum hose and have had no problems yet but if you look back at the video the condencing pipe that i am using is made a lot longer than most it is 7 feet long. that is what is cooling the gas before it goes into the grey barrel.
I'd love to see the internals, if you could pop the top for us and give some details on what you used for the fire tube, hearth and such I would much appreciate it.
So how hard is it to mow the leaves with that setup? I suppose you could put all that in a wagon and pull it around with you. But when about the blower's 120v power?
Basic and very impressive. Wish you'd have popped the top to the reactor unit so I could have seen how you built that. Wonder what your filter media was, too.
O segredo do negocio eh manter aqueima regular e eficiente, nao perder nada do gas e controlar a entrada do ar no queimador e no misturador q ira pro motor. O motor basicamente eh o adaptado pra gas no Brasil
@Gunther222 Actually it is Carbon Monoxide gas that is being burned. It's the same fuel used in Steel Mill Blast Furnace Stoves which are used to preheat the blast B4 going into the blast furnace.
Nice job on the simple gasifier. are you getting any tar build up? have you tried a filtration system prior to going into the lawn mower? that would run a gas generator for a while, what was your longest run time with the fuel that high up on the primary burner?
ok so the mower is running on wood gas / biogas, without a governor and sitting still! How do you purpose to get the lawn done unless you move the mower around on the lawn? A better application would have been to fuel a generator
you would be-able to use a small motor cycle engine radiator and and have a small pump pump water through an old/cheap bran new cooler put ice water and salt in it. then have that water run through your rad and you wood gas it will cool it off more. : )
I think the mower was only an engine to show us how well it works. They used this in the WW2 because of the shortage of gas & fuels. The used things like this to run all sorts of motors & cars & trucks by mounting it on the car or truck.
Its a proof of concept thing showing that methanol made from the dry distillation of cellulose (from wood) can be used to fuel things that ordinarily run on petrol
@kickrockss1 i think its called "The Colony" i learned alot from it and other natural resources that we may call garbage today but later may be valuable the next day..
Can someone please explain to me whether or not the "h" shaped copper pipe in this video can be attached to the engine in your vehicle and used to power that.

I like your throttle setup. Simple and effective.
Very nice. 2 questions:
1. What are you using in the grey barrel for filter media?
2. What is the flexible tube running from the filter to the engine? I started out using vacuum cleaner hose and quickly melted it!
Awesome project thanks for posting the video for everyone to see.TAKE CARE
Cool as heck! Finnaly a great demonstration of wood gas actually doing something. Thanks.
Simplest design and best description I have seen yet!
How does the right hand side valve tap speed up or slow down the engine revs? Great job!
Total Simplicity, You done an awesome job zzschoen. keep up the good work
THIS...surprisingly, is the wave of the future. Good video!

the most simple design ive seen I like that!
that's a great idea for a wood powered generator!
Nice build!

Dude that is freakin Awesome! LOVE IT! Kinda hard to mow the yard like that though LOL
Hard to beat not buying gasoline if you don't have to! Specially at today's prices..... So glad I built a woodgas truck
Could you tell us where you got the blower? Make/model would be helpful. Thank you

Nice clean Build
Does it have to be wood or can paper also be used to generate these gasses?
this is really cool do you have a video of how you built it that would be nice 5 stars

Available on Amazon for around $25
sweet .. did u adjust the timing on the ignition at all ?
What did you use for a burn chamber?
You made it look so simple!! Is the gas coming out burns with a blue flame? Thank you for posting!
Did you follow a specific instructable how to make it or did you came up with your own design?
Can you post the details on how this can be built? Great emergency power solution!

Now you can cut your grass during the next fuel embargo:) Awesome project!!!
very cool! but how will you drag those tanks around while you cut the grass?
Maybe you should power a generator and charge some batteries or something.
this is awesome i have no words
Nice Carb!
is the grey container a cooler and cleaner?
first question what am i using in the grey barrel for a filter? saw dust and wood chips.

well worth a like and a sub good work they used to run vehicles off woodgas
It's seems like a good idea but the range of your mower is pretty limited.
Is this all homemade and or can I buy one somewhere?
Oh really now!? So are you bypassing the carb going directly into the intake port?
did you take the carb off the engine?
Basic and very impressive. Wish you'd have popped the top to the reactor unit so I could have seen how you built that. Wonder what your filter media was, too.

is that 2-stroke engine?
How do you strap the two drums and all that piping to your back while you're mowing the lawn?
Its certainly going to be easy to mow your lawn now...
Will the wood gas power both gas and diesel engines? You should connect it to a generator and power your house.
Thats one hell of a fuel tank for that little mower
@Gunther222 Actually it is Carbon Monoxide gas that is being burned. It's the same fuel used in Steel Mill Blast Furnace Stoves which are used to preheat the blast B4 going into the blast furnace.

Can the gas that's produced be stored away in a tank, or must it be used right away?
Kool beans
This is a hit! Where can I find a simple drawing?
I knew I could power my house with old leaves and twigs..thanks for the post ! )
A tip : watch series on kaldrostream. I've been using them for watching a lot of movies these days.
@Ralph Kai Definitely, I've been watching on kaldrostream for since november myself :D
the future!, brilliant idea
please can u give me d details how i can build this...this is magnificent.
so can i capture this gas, in a propane tank for example. cause if u cant then what is the purpose?
friend would like to know how you did this generator?
how did you hook it up to a generator?
whats with the two valves one with a hose and one sucks air/oxygen in?
great job
thanks
How do you mow with that attached?
Now you can hook a generator up to the mower and make power right? I wonder how big of a electric generator you could run like that?
Do that process causes demage on a motor???
I don't agree with calling people morons, but you did understand the point of the video.
Ok so how are you planning on using that mower to mow the yard.this might be good to run a generator.
can you pressurize wood gas
ok so the mower is running on wood gas / biogas, without a governor and sitting still! How do you purpose to get the lawn done unless you move the mower around on the lawn? A better application would have been to fuel a generator
Excelente mi amigo te felicito tendrás algunos planos para hacer el gasificador?
man that is very cool. thanks for the insight I bet it is a pain in the butt mowing your lawn. LOL
you would be-able to use a small motor cycle engine radiator and and have a small pump pump water through an old/cheap bran new cooler put ice water and salt in it. then have that water run through your rad and you wood gas it will cool it off more. : )
thnkx ill remember this for the nex apocalypse
very nice using a waist product is allway a good thing
Can i control the air flow into the chamber ? Like 100lpm , 200lpm.
Can you run the gas fumes through a water filter just BEFORE the motor to take the tar out of the gas
I ask myself, how you move on with this mower to mow the grass now ??
I think the mower was only an engine to show us how well it works. They used this in the WW2 because of the shortage of gas & fuels. The used things like this to run all sorts of motors & cars & trucks by mounting it on the car or truck.
Does anyone know where to find FULL and WELL EXPLAINED instruction to build gassifier with 55 gallons barrel? thanx!
i see 2 ball valves at the intake i guess one for air an one for fuel for a mixture adjustment
Anywhere? I've never seen cherry pits for sale around here. Wood chips would be a problem to find, too.
Its a proof of concept thing showing that methanol made from the dry distillation of cellulose (from wood) can be used to fuel things that ordinarily run on petrol
Put the generator in a car...Don t Quit get the first part were you feed the Cherry pits,,other than that cool video!!!!!
is there any reason i cant run my small generator with the smoke from my woodstove?
@kickrockss1
i think its called "The Colony" i learned alot from it and other natural resources that we may call garbage today but later may be valuable the next day..
thats got to be the easiest way to rig an air mix valve
This is just steam pushing a piston?
@tucsonpersonified I like how you misspelled cigarette.

Impressive. Those Suzuki engines don't run that smooth on gasoline!
"That's where all the wood gas goes"
You got some way of keeping O2 and Sparks out of that thing?
@NJDjetix189 Oh yes of course. LHS is wood gas and RHS is air. Seems obvious now that you have pointed it out. Thanks and regards.
Can someone please explain to me whether or not the "h" shaped copper pipe in this video can be attached to the engine in your vehicle and used to power that.
See MrTestonian RUclips channel he runs a pickup with one of these
I like the fact your standing next to hydrogen with a cigarett.
Yes it can!
@steveyodog lmao good one
