Do you ride in the rain, or even when the trails are wet and puddly? Or are you a fair-weather rider? Let us know in the comments & share your tips for riding in the rain! 👇
I ride in all conditions, I'm a little more than a novice lvl rider don't have the best bike. I have rode DD trails but feel more comfortable on single black diamonds and mid lvl trails. You are 💯 correct if your mindset is off then you will get tossed to the ground. What I have learned is confidence is key and there is no shame in going slow or walking around or down, if you think you can.or.you can't then you are right
Yeah. My definition of luxury is when I'm covered in mud and I have a break, sitting alone somewhere in the forest, and pulling out the thermos with a good coffee.
One tip. If you are stopping in the rain for any amount of time like coffee or food cover your rotors with plastic bags. It keeps your rotors working and saves that horrible screech when you first brake. I ride all year all weather all temps.
I mean, best advice is to "let it go". You'll get wet, dirty, and need to wash your bike anyway. Dont bother avoiding puddles and greasy spots... Better get it done straight away and go for a big ride.
decades ago I scored a set of Gore-tex socks. Maybe it would be batter to call them "overstocks" for an epic month long motorcycle ride through New Zealand. One of the best investments in creatures comforts. I still have them to this day...
I used to buy a lot of gore tex style clothing but honestly the properties won't last long riding in bad condition, a wind jacket with merino wool under, you'll get wet anyway...
I occasionally ride in bad weather as well, can be very fun. The only drawback is that cleaning etc takes a lot longer. Something to take into account if you also have a busy family life, like I do. A little planning goes a long way. Great video 👍
Also in winter ain\mud - you can use bigger mudguards, especially from the rear- there are rear mudguards by Zefal that attached to rear fork and protect your back from soaking wet\mud\snow and protecting your rear suspension from gunk even more prolonging its work in extreme conditions. They are removable vie quickly snap on mechanism and you can remove it for summer. Also light weight. Will be less washing later. Tip's from Eastern Europe...
Great video, and you're right; if we don't embrace riding in the rain in the UK we probably won't ride at all. My local loop is mostly flat and not particularly technical (at all). When it rains and turns mushy, it becomes a lot more challenging and requires you to pick lines carefullly.
It's raining all week in Los Angeles CA. I'm having a great time riding in this pineapple express storm. Got all my rain gear in service. Staying dry , keeping my feet warm with rain boots. I'm doing all this riding a 1985 specialized stumpjumper.
I ride all year. Mudguards: I prefer much more coverage, and its actually quite easy to achieve even with removable options. For example my SKS X-Blade works quite well - no wet back, backpack and youknowwhat, even when crossing streams. A long front mudguard helps to reduce the splashing of water and dirt towards the drivetrain, at least to some extent, etc.
I layered for a cold start and removed stuff as the day heated up and then got arrested. Not sure why as I was still wearing my helmet and shoes. Safety first.
Solid video, but the one thing you didn't talk about is how riding in wet conditions effect the trails. Maybe you have a whole video in the works about just that topic... [hint][hint]. The ratio of folks that work on the trails vs the folk that ride the trails is pitiful just about everywhere. Nothing ravages the trails like riding while they are wet. I'd like to see a call to action at the end of the video for folks to join their local trail club and help out on the trails. Maybe in the Spring (assuming the UK gets one) GMBN could put together some videos with local trail clubs about working on trails. [hint][hint] Think about a little series of trail maintenance/repair/and upgrade with local clubs. Maybe GCN can help out buy bring in professional trail builders to help out... Like one of those house make over shows but for trails! [hint][hint]. GMBN has been using the local trails to make content (money) for ages, maybe its time GMBN puts some resources back into the trails...
I've been out riding all winter it's been so wet and muddy ,those few frozen days we've had were a dream in comparison. Shoes have been my nemesis wet feet are a nightmare. I got caught out yesterday about half hour into my ride and rode through a puddle to wash my wheels off a bit . If only I'd known it was 2 foot deep before I went through . Wet feet for the next 3hours 🤦
Mindset is what stops me. I have no problem with the eventual wet ride, but when I lived in Scotland for 15 years I simply decided not to ride my bike anymore 🙁 Now in Mexico I'm pretty happy 😊 In the rainy season I just go out between the showers (water doesn't stay in the surface, dries within 3 hours and I've got the best dirt available. Been thinking on going back to Scotland but am afraid that would mean the end of MTB'ing for me 😬
RainX on your glasses or goggles works well if you don't have tear offs. Just rub it on and wipe it off quickly because it can damage some plastics if left on too long.
Ya wee smug bugger! tis mud mud mud at this end.. outside dust is mythical.. tis a soft day today n not tempting.. tho were it sunny the trails wd still be muddy!
So jealous of u being able to ride in mud... Where I live mud sticks to my wheel, after a couple of minutes it wont spin anymore 😂😂. Mud guards are worse, they block the wheel even sooner.
I ride rain or shine 😁🤘 Grest advice Rich 👊 Trails neimg wet/muddy just changes up my local rides I tens not to longer rodes in the wet though as rodomg in the mud is harder and more fatiguing plus its a shorter distance to get home if i start feeling cold.
Thanks Rich i think a rear mudguard is a good idea . they look like shit but stop you getting covered in it. especialy on a 24 hour race in the highlands
I would argue that the best clothes for riding in the wet, especially when it's cold, includes a pair of well fitting waders. That keeps you dry from your toes all the way to your chest. And since they go far up your back, you won't be compromised by a jacket that has slid slightly up your back.
Same here where I live. Trails close for the winter and if they're too wet the rest of the year they usually end up closing. Although I did get one last ride in before winter, couldn't believe the trail was open. It was a complete mud bog and so slick, but I had an absolute blast. 😅
All this stuff about staying warm. My issue is staying cool, always wear shorts, my l your skin doesn't soak water in like pants and doesn't feel uncomfortable and when you're peddling, you stay warm
In the States, the trail management will throw you out of the park and possibly ban you if you ride on the groomed trails when they’re wet or it’s raining…. I like the freedom you guys have there in Europe to ride trails anytime-
The trails generally close anytime the ground is wet where I live in NC, so it’s usually a soggy gravel ride instead.😢 Why don’t people like rear mud guards?
Low tyre pressure and lowering suspension pressure not good for rolling resistance in mud (undulating trail) and wld kill yr legs.. making a longer ride exhausting.. lol .. keep u fit for summer however😅👍
How to ride in the wet well - Choose to live in the Forest of Dean! The best advice to "wet weather riding" is "if the kids are out getting coaching with Wye MTB every Saturday morning at FoD, come rain or shine", you've still got to turn up, so you might as well ride! Breathable clothing and spare change of clothes in the car is better than heading out, sweating and overheating, in water repellent overlayers. You know you'll be sorted in 2-3 hours time. As for the mind set, given that the whole family rides every Saturday, washing one bike is no different to washing and drying and lubing 4 bikes... it just takes more time. But spare change of clothes including socks and shoes so that it makes the drive home more bearable is the one.
On the topic of Goggles. No Tearoffs or Rolloffs, Unless your putting the dirty ones in your pockets. If your throwing plastic on the trail you are a garbage human being. Many trails these days have a no tear offs bylaw, and many races have banned them. They are horrible for the environment. Also, try a Yellow lens for your goggles, or better yet carrying a second pair of goggles with a yellow lens to change between two lenses easily when going in and out of dark foresty areas into brighter areas. Yellow highlights details better in low light somehow, it feels like magic. Also good to have two pairs because pretty much all goggles in cold wet weather will fog or condensate when riding, there isnt really a work around for that, even with factory coatings, dual pane lenses and muc off spray on ant fog treatment. Changing up your goggles every hour or so during a ride isnt that bad, and sometimes it really makes sense when you enter a darker area to swap over to the yellow, then when you come out you swap back to a clear or even amber tint depending on the weather really.
What's a bit of mud? Not like riding out in nature was ever a clean sport. It's not tennis or fencing in white knickers after all. Mud, rain is just more fun stuff Mom Planet gives you to enjoy. Puddles cool you down when it's hot. Cleans the animal dung out of your tires. As long as you have the means to avoid going hypothermic, take it on, make some history and enjoy the slop.
Uk weather is getting worse. Endless rain in Bristol all year round. No choice but to accept it. Riding is fine, but all that cleaning over and over. Urghh.

GMBN take place primarily in UK.
I went there few times, I liked it...but guys, weather sucks😂
I'm sorry for you
Yeah. My definition of luxury is when I'm covered in mud and I have a break, sitting alone somewhere in the forest, and pulling out the thermos with a good coffee.

an add on to the gardening gloves on the other vid.. winter? freezer worker gloves.. ie waterproof and fleece lined work gloves..
I mean, best advice is to "let it go". You'll get wet, dirty, and need to wash your bike anyway. Dont bother avoiding puddles and greasy spots... Better get it done straight away and go for a big ride.
I'm the fighter type, mudguards are never big enough 😈
Good socks + multiple layers!!!
I cant stress enough how much it matters that you choose the right socks for your ride during colder times.
decades ago I scored a set of Gore-tex socks. Maybe it would be batter to call them "overstocks" for an epic month long motorcycle ride through New Zealand. One of the best investments in creatures comforts. I still have them to this day...
Yip any shoes you have can and will get drenched so a pair of Marino or seal skin socks are a must and being winter you can opt for the longer kind
I used to buy a lot of gore tex style clothing but honestly the properties won't last long riding in bad condition, a wind jacket with merino wool under, you'll get wet anyway...
Wool is where it's at!

Great video 👍

Mud guard singular?!
Mud guard on the rear too! Saves you from having a wet back side.
How about a rear mudguard?
My bike looks like a porcupine, can't have enough mudguards
Yeah, I’m not sure what the problem is with a lot of mountain bikers. What’s the fear of a rear mudguard?
It's raining all week in Los Angeles CA. I'm having a great time riding in this pineapple express storm. Got all my rain gear in service. Staying dry , keeping my feet warm with rain boots. I'm doing all this riding a 1985 specialized stumpjumper.

Skins waterproof just get out there and enjoy it... can't beat a dirty weekend 😜

Much rather be out in the rain than a windy day. All good with a tail wind mind you

Great job with this video. Really enjoyed it!
I don’t ride in the rain or wet. Don’t like cleaning my bike all the time everytime!
I've been out riding all winter it's been so wet and muddy ,those few frozen days we've had were a dream in comparison.

Love these kinds of vids, keep em coming!
Thanks! Will do!
Move to Perth, Australia!
Our cold rainy/ wet winters, are in the low teens!
Ya wee smug bugger! tis mud mud mud at this end.. outside dust is mythical.. tis a soft day today n not tempting.. tho were it sunny the trails wd still be muddy!
Silicone spray on the underside of mudguards helps.
This is just what we need ❤
I love to biking when heavy raining during monsoon season because it is normal thing in equator
So jealous of u being able to ride in mud... Where I live mud sticks to my wheel, after a couple of minutes it wont spin anymore 😂😂. Mud guards are worse, they block the wheel even sooner.
get a flying bike.. or move t somewhere with friendly mud.. avoid clay n limey muds- theyre sticky!
I ride rain or shine 😁🤘
Grest advice Rich 👊
Trails neimg wet/muddy just changes up my local rides

It's easier to keep your eyes open and look ahead with eye-pro. Also, gloves will keep your hands warm so you can stay out longer.
I would argue that the best clothes for riding in the wet, especially when it's cold, includes a pair of well fitting waders. That keeps you dry from your toes all the way to your chest. And since they go far up your back, you won't be compromised by a jacket that has slid slightly up your back.
Where I ride if there is a light shower the trail centers shut everything down it's so annoying
Sounds like qld, australia 😅

For me merino socks were a gamer changer, they are SO much better than regular socks
My advice, when you go out, make it worthwhile. Send it through puddles, get wet, make the most of it
All this stuff about staying warm. My issue is staying cool, always wear shorts, my l your skin doesn't soak water in like pants and doesn't feel uncomfortable and when you're peddling, you stay warm

2:23 It's like overshoes were never invented...
Or you could just stay in...
For me, the first thing would be the mud guard in the rear. I hate mud in my crack.
The trails generally close anytime the ground is wet where I live in NC, so it’s usually a soggy gravel ride instead.😢
Why don’t people like rear mud guards?
I ride all year round, but cold wet winters suck. After 24 years of riding them, I STILL hate them.
Low tyre pressure and lowering suspension pressure not good for rolling resistance in mud (undulating trail) and wld kill yr legs.. making a longer ride exhausting.. lol .. keep u fit for summer however😅👍
I live in Southern Arizona, so I can don't have to ride in the rain often.
Very lucky! We get rain every other day here in the UK 😩
Actually I love these muddy harsh condition but I hate cleaning the bike afterwards
i think it's a blast. i just absolutely can not stand the cleanup, at all, so i skip it
Kinda sad how they used to get 150k views the years ago but only 30k now
I think the guy at 5:37 could do with a mudguard!

"Your tires should be the only thing touching the ground. If not, I feel sorry for you."
Ouch, thats a barb to us newbies.
Sorry 😅
Become one with the mud!
That's the mindset we're talking about!

seriously, the worst part of riding in the wet is cleaning lubricating everything afterwards
The lack of gloves on Rich's hands in this video is driving me crazy.
riding in the rain in summer can be pretty fun and refreshing, but in the winter it's miserable
I ride on the road when it rains that way I don't wreck the trails that someone spent hours working on.
Some trails are okay to ride in the wet, but ideally stay away from flow trails as they won't be very flowy after 😅
Grip tape on controls chews through gloves.....very expensive tip.
Expensive, but saves you from slipping in those crucial moments!
I dont ride wet trails out of respect for my local maintenance crews.
thats what he said
(the thumbnail lol)
Hi. I´ve noticed that you guys never ( or hardly never ) wear gloves. Why ?
You're gonna get all sweaty anyway so the rain won't make any difference.
