Biggest takeway from this video? probably the confidence of speaking into a microphone has changed massively, I did not remember it being so bad in the early episodes, lmao anyways, 1 Million QnA announcement tomorrow, just keep an eye on the community tab. :)
Let's just admire the fact that this dude made entire 132 episodes of this series, dating back 3 years ago I couldn't wait to watch another one of his episodes and I believe that many people share my view on this.I learned so much things I didn't even know existed about cars, brands ,interesting facts and other stuff from his series and I want to thank carmighty for continuing this series for 4 years almost,it gives me so much nostalgia from when I was 14 or 13 waiting for the school to end so I could sit and have lunch while watching his videos.I admire this man much more than words could explain and the effort he puts into making people laugh and teach them something new and interesting about cars is deserving the 1 million subscribers he has.Have a good one, mighty!
41:16! Thank you Mighty and Editor for choosing my clip to be in the 'Best Of' video. Although I wasn't credited (this was resolved in the Discord) I am still happy to see my clip here. The Jet Truck is called 'Shockwave' and unfortunately the driver passed away in a horrific crash during an air show event that took place shortly after this event (you can look it up, but viewer discretion is advised). For anyone that is interested in learning more about 'Shockwave' I recommend reading up on the driver. I've watched that truck go down the track since I was a little kid and have talked with the driver. He was an amazing guy... His son is now continuing his legacy in his own truck called 'Aftershock.' Thanks again Mr. Mighty and Mr. Editor for choosing this clip! LONG LIVE SHOCKWAVE!!!
The truck at 42:07 was manufactured in Brazil in the 60's/70's by FNM under a license from Alfa romeo/Fiat. The second small gear lever was an option, and is essentially a 2-speed auxiliary gearbox, essentially doubling the number of gears. It works like any other 2-lever gearbox, and resembles the system found in the _deuce-and a half_ military trucks.
42:20 The long stick is for changing main gears, the small one is for low-high ratio of the selected gear. It also exists as a 3-stick version where the 3rd stick changes the long stick from gears 1-4 to 5-8. And each of those gears has its own low-high setting.
33:15 I've literally fixed my Audi 80 in the same way, just a bit slower. After pulling front grill from the radiator and changing one headlight I was able to drive it 20 km back home xD
16:00 Yes, I also realised that you have to drive in reverse to do a donut! I've done it in a highly modded Cooper S powered 1973 Mini Clubman, as well as a 1983 Suzuki Swift! What's also fun is driving in reverse, then using the handbrake to do a J-turn while shifting into 1st-gear so you've done a 180deg turn, then shifting up through the gears, & heading back the way you came!
About the FNM Alfa Romeo: The lever on the dash is the high/low selector. The driver pulls a gear on the normal stick on the floor in low, then shift to high in the dash, then selects the next gear while putting the transfer case back in low, so on so forth. There was even a version with 2 high/low boxes and 3 levers and you had to operate 2 of them on every gear shift.
Love the Seattle call-out, I hate that exit. There's also a highway entrance that's built pretty similarly for the northbound lanes that doesn't give much time to accelerate.
6:48 i remember the old guys at the motorcycle shop telling me they ran a windshield wiper line so it sprayed straight out the back and then they filled it with ATF. someone else told me about a buddy of his who ran it through the dash and near his cup holders, then would the reservoir with whiskey
Perhaps, the real Dose of Automotive Stuff was the friends we made in the way, the cars we discovered in the way, the quirks and facts we learned in the way, and the fun we had in the way Thank you Mighty, looking foward for the Weekly Dose of Automotive Stuff in the second channel❤
42:59 High/low double gearbox. Saw them a lot in trucks in the 90s and 00s. Maybe first gen? Never seen the high/low be manual like that, was always a small switch (usually on the shifter), using air pressure to do the actual work
42:56 The FNM truck has 2 gearboxes in line, so there's the regular gear on low shifter and another one with a high-low position on the other one. So you go 1L, 1H, 2L, 2H. Every time you advance from one gear to the next, like 2nd to 3rd, you are also going from High back to Low, like a bicycle with 3 speeds on the front, and 7 on the back.
I know i'm late to the party but, i really love the BMG video's, they're so off the rails, I love the spontaneity of unpredictable chaos. may i suggest robin reliant vs semi trailers capture the flag.
42:45. Thats an alfaromeo truck sold in Brazil inte 60's and 70s...it has a dry gear box, unsinchronized gears (had do double clutch) with 4 speeds, and low gear. The driver is "crossing gears", as using the low and high range while shifting up the gears. The lever on the dash is the range selector and the one onthe floor is the gear selector. Congrats for the time. Been here since the begging. Keep up
this clip of the president limousine is real, it´s from a brazilian tv called "record Tv" they thinked this was real, and some time after this they do the same thing with another game clip
We need a compilation of all the beautiful scenes he's filmed while driving. Like the one of all the street lights from the ends of the older episodes.
Thanks for this. I'd never seen the F1 car setting record at Goodwood footage, so that was cool. Immediately, I thought, "he better show the McMurtry", and you did. People need to know about that car. I'm not a huge fan of the EV's, but they have their place. The McMurtry is the perfect application of electric, carbon fibre, and downforce fan. I also really liked the sleeper Camry dragster.
42:50 its basically a crawl gear (reduced - as we say), you would only use it when carrying heavy loads, but people do it because its fun and looks cool
yo thats crazy, the junkyard at 48 minutes is literally my local one, I recognized when he was driving out onto the road with the truck and looked at the credits and was like yoooo, worst part is after more then 3 decades of service they were shut down like a month or two ago :(
Very first item- for a while in the USA, cars were not allowed to be sold with suspensions that could vary their height. This was part of the crash safety regulations about bumper height- they required certain protection at certain height and needed to guarantee the bumper would always BE that height. There were a few exceptions for some import cars that used the suspension adjustment to maintain a set ride height (example when the trunk was heavily loaded) but not to change the ride height. Import cars that had the adjustable suspension had to have a US specific program that took extra certification from the DOT and it wasn't common. I only ever saw german luxury cars that had it and I heard later that the german market versions could do more tricks. (source: several articles in car magazines in the 80s 90s while this was all happening. When people complain about classic import cars having to have "5mph bumpers" or bumper overcaps that look bad, it's part of this bunch of regulation.) There was recent talk about the DOT changing this to allow cars to lower at high speeds in the name of aerodynamics/fuel efficiency, but I lost track of what happened with that.
42:10 the upper small stick is the shifter and the lower big one engage/disengage the low gear. So there will be 1st low, 1st high (big one down), 2nd low (shifting smaller one down and the other up simultaneously) and so on... Brasilian's truck manufacturer FNM thas stands for Fábrica Nacional de Motores (National Engine Factory) on the clip
"The McMurtry". Ah yes.. but hat still goes off to Gordon Murray for just DARING 😂 "well, there was nothing in the rule book that said you couldn't so..."
who else remembers the start of this series? feels like it was only like a year ago but no, 4 whole years, im happy ive been here ever since it started!
I got a car hunt video idea. You basically get to choose your own car, but there is a couple hunters that can track you because there is a tracker in a component of your car and you can get rid of it but you'll lose that component. You can make it something like it's in the engine and you need to downgrade at a gas station or something. So you have less power but you can't get tracked anymore. So pretty much you can nerf yourself but it nerfs the hunters too. And by the way, I love your videos and you do an amazing job making them. Keep up the good work.
10:29 the manta gpt quite good reliable engines, 110hp were in the early 80s a good amount of power. Then there was the 2.4 16v cih with 144 hp, and the blue one out of the video has the same engine than mine, c20xe 2.0 16v with 150hp stock. Great engine, lot of potential
A friend had a T5 VW transporter, tuned it up with a jaguar engine mounted sideways, the entire back could be turned into a big bed, there was a ps2 in there with a full-sized TV that pops out between driver and front passenger.
34:00 I remember saw the Caddy Limo in the news here in Brazil and they were telling this is the test to be a US President driver, but it was just a video in Forza Motorsport 7 🤣🤣
lol that union st exit in Seattle is not joke! You have to slow down to under 20 to be able to make it and it’s followed by an immediate traffic light that’s almost always red
42:17 Just in case this is still read: This is a dual transmission system, some US-trucks have it too. Basically, you got the gearbox by the engine, and another gearbox near the rear wheels. Let's say the "main" one has six gears, and the secondary one has four. That means you can go 1-6 four times, getting you 24 gears and thus a much better ratio for just about any situation you may encounter, without requiring a massively overcomplicated 24-speed manual. It's similar to some bycicles, where you can pick the gear at the pedals and at the back.
At 42:21 i suspect that is like the mack i learned to drive. The lever on the dash is a high low splitter and the lever on the floor is the trans mission. You shift into gear, then shift the splitter, the go from 1hi to 2LO and so forth I drive truck

Crazy to think that we already have more than 100 episodes, kudos for the team, and for everyone who submitted.
In The Entire episodes of Weekly Does of Automotive Stuff just makes me happy actually this is the best Day I ever watch
I will never get bored of Weekly Dose Of Automotive Stuff

I thought it is standard stuff on all lorry trucks, no? I'm surprised that "car people" didn't hear about this, maybe it is not common nowadays?
