I love her for saying that. It's statements like that makes me stay in love with the Korean culture. As a black person, I almost responded to the prejudices negatively. "Fine, I'll just hate and detest them more than they do me". There were thoughts like that. Fortunately for me I learned that there are Koreans who admire my culture as much as I admire thiers. That overshadowed the hatred and is the reason why I continue to support them. There's nothing more color blind than love.

As an American who interacts with people of different ethnicity everyday, I find it quite surprising that Koreans can have prejudices to that kind of an extent about foreigners or people who look different. This should definitely be addressed especially as we live in a fully globalized 21st century

    • @bingbong5053

Christopher Yiwei Liang same, in one day I probably talk to many different people of colour and many different ethnicities and I've always grown up seeing a variety of people so I'm used to it now. Racism really surprises me because where I live its normal to be different. I don't understand where the hate is coming from.

All the comments are about the first guy just because is cute. But the real deal here is how Korea is such a racist & superficial country... of course is a concern! He is a good citizen rejected by people just because of how he looks. Like the Mc said: "it's our concern for having that prejudice" 👏🏻

As a filipino myself I find this very offensive. In the Philippines a lot of people have darker skin color than he is, his skin color isn't even considered dark in my country, we call his skin color kayumangi. Also we Filipino's never point at Koreans who come in our country and say oh look they have monolids rather that double eye lids. The raicism in Korean is too much to handle.

Actually he looks more like a Bumbay than a Filipino (though he could pass for one). Most Koreans are vain & think that whiter skin, double eyelids, high nose, V-shaped face etc., are the standards to be considered pretty thus almost everyone is doing plastic surgery

    • @blackvelvet1656
      @blackvelvet1656 6 лет назад +18

Saka nung tinanong siya kung anong bansa na madalas nilang inaakala kung saan siya galing, sinabi niyang sa Pilipinas parang ayaw na ayaw niya yung idea na yon.
Ako din, I have lighter skin color than kayumangi. My friends and my classmates envy me dahil mas maputi ako sa kanila.

I know a girl in my class who has the same voice as the boy in the 1st concern. On the first day, we had an activity and since she was new, me and my friend decided to group up with her. When I first heard her talk, I was surprised but didn't talk about it. I thought she had a cold or lost her voice temporarily. Then a month past and she still had the same voice. I've become used with her voice now and I realized that she's confident with her voice too (she talks A LOT during her presentations) so it became normal for me. It makes me mad when she answers a question of the teacher and someone in the back says 'What she said? I can't hear, talk louder'. She obviously can't, at least try to understand. I think the only solution for him, if he can't do the surgery, is being confident.

I was expecting a voice more similar to a childhood friend of mine, but it wasn't the same. It was more airy though. Because my childhood friend basically had the voice of a 60 year old whiskey addict who had smoked since the age of 18, except he was 9 years old. That's a raspy voice. I don't really get why he would get teased though. I thought my friend had an unique voice, but I didn't think more of it. As far as I know, he wasn't teased about it either, although he has some problems, some form of learning disability and such. That's what he was teased for by a select few, although not much.

It also took me a while to accept my Filipino features (flat nose), and I still criticize myself for it, however I've been seeing myself in a more positive light. Darker skin also can be beautiful, so are monolids. Everyone is beautiful in their own way! Let's make sure to appreciate that!!

Jian Bhe happy with your flat nose, small noses are super cute! I never understood why high bridge noses are so sought after. They really don't make such a huge difference to the face imo. Probably because it's a common trait among westerners, so Asia just wants to follow.

Stephanie Almeida aww don't be! There are different beauty standards around the world. I assure you that in many European countries, tanned skin = better looking. Just the other day, my Spanish uncle told us to go out in the sun more to get really brown cause it's better to look tanned than pale. So let's not judge ourselves based on Korean beauty standards cause we dark skinned people obviously don't fit in with it. But that doesn't mean we're not favoured by other cultures around the world. At the end of the day, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. 🙂

Stephanie Almeida oh right, sorry for misunderstanding your comment. I thought you found the concern hard to watch cause you can relate with it. I totally agree, it's horrible for dark skinned foreigners going to Korea to earn a living - especially considering how there are a lot of OFW's (Overseas Filipino Workers) that immigrate to South Korea to support their families!
I myself am filipino, but I wasn't really hurt by the last concern cause I've come to accept my naturally tanned skin. But I know that my fellow kpop obsessed Filipino friends would get hurt by watching the last concern. The worst of all is the fact that the man came and his concern is "people think I'm a foreigner": is that an insult or something??? And when he explained that he asked his mother if their ancestors were foreigners, he said she beat him up like??? Is it something people should be ashamed of?

I'm honestly kind of disappointed in Wendy because she's from Canada so I thought she would speak more about concerns of discrimination and abuse. She seems rather reserved and conservative which is different from her personality when she is with Red Velvet. I'm glad Joy spoke up about her concerns and she seemed more open minded than Wendy which makes me surprised. Especially, the last guy when he got discriminated because of his skin color; Wendy said to be more brave and live confidently which doesn't help at all. I'm glad Joy spoke up and said that Korea needs to change not him. Also I'm glad the counselors actually said it was discrimination and violence.

My Tran i think Idols in General Dont talk about this matter that much or voice their opinion because maybe the agency told them to do so , often they are there to entertain people, if you notice idols are only giving certain parts of personal information to us , maybe their whole personality is given from their agency I hope you understood my explanation, English isn't my firsts language

Spring Tempo of course it shouldn't, but it is, in many countries not just Korea. Jamaica and India for example have an insane amount of discrimination against dark people and LOADS of them bleach their skin twice a day. It's just the world we live in. He was clearly handsome when he was younger. He is being treated badly because his dark skin makes him look like a foreigner. It's about race not beauty.

I love what Yeongja said for the third concern, "It's our concern for having that prejudice". It's just complicated for the older generation to accept different races. Even though this man is 100% Korean, people will always judge based on appearance. And now because I believe that most of the people watching this episode are mostly the younger generation, it's our turn to start changing our society into accepting anyone with different skin color and different race. It's all about accepting people who were born the way they are. Yes, racism/discrimination is an endless cycle, but start now to eliminate racism & discrimination so that when we all have children someday, our children are all accepted for who they are as well. I am proud of all these people who come out and say that they're Korean. They are so brave. It is our choice to change our ways. :)

I feel bad about people being this judgemental with people of darker skin, but I think what he meant about "fortunately she is pale like her mom" is that her daughter won't go through the hardships he went through, because he knows what it feels and as a parent you don't want your children go through hardships. I agreed with the last part, when the woman sad "it's our concern for having that prejudice" because this kind of treatment it's by any means okay. • @Eriluvie
      @Eriluvie 7 лет назад +17

I think this issue in particular was more about his skin tone, but the class division is a concern as well. What I'm trying to say is that the biggest concern here is the attitude of the citizens with foreign/dark skin color people in general (not all of them are like that from what I've gathered, but there's still a concerning amount of people that are this judgemental and rude to an extent to be considered as a big issue). It's sad that he had to think "oh, my daughter has pale skin, she will be okay", no one should go through this kind of treatment, it's painful to see how people are treated this unfairly because of something as natural as your skin color.

You know with how some dump foreigners do crap and get away with it, some even have it easier than most koreans... no wonder they don't like us. Most elderly feel like their whole life's work will be ruined when they see us- racial tension, radical dongs, twerking. Seeing the country advance makes them feel a little better and they don't see anything good about us. I think that WE foreign people also need to change too. With all the crap about us guns, drug no wonder they dont want us, cause it's a fact that there is always truth to things they see about us. If they don't want us its ok cause it's their country not ours. :\ All of us have to work hard to change for a brighter future.

About the first concern: It's soo refreshing to finally see some decent and caring parents on the show. They looked really emotional and somewhat regretful after hearing about their son's hardships and aknoledged they may have made mistakes or burdened him. Most parent's we've seen on the show are usually the cause of a concern, but his really had tried all they could to care for their son, and they would've done even more if they could afford travelling to the U.S
His hyung seams very protective of him too.
It makes me tear up, the child is indeen very troubled and his concern is very serious as it is affecting not only his current life but could make his future even harder depending on his carrer choice.
The fact that he din't tell his family how hard it all is so they woudn't be worried makes me so sad. But still I feel like they are all bessed and lucky, to be part of such a caring and loving family.

Why is it that darker skinned people in different cultures are often discriminated against. No one can help the skin they were born into and I honestly don't get how people can make fun of or judge people because of their freaking skin tone

Ayo Ola In NEAsia it has to do with the fact that they are a homogeneous population, thus there were not many ethnic differences, so skin shade had lots to do with your social class. Like, if peasant you worked under the sun, so you got tanner, if noble you worked in a sheltered environment, so you became paler. So it is kind of different in root and way to western racism.

The mother in the second concern bothers me a little. It's so obvious she has no sincere consideration towards her daughter or how she feels. She just cares about having someone to control. When the panelists brought up the possibility of her daughter going wild or out of control when she moves out, the mother said she doesn't care or it doesn't concern her because she can't see it. That's just ridiculous.

The 1st family...they have good genes. Their sons are so handsome. One of them should be a model... (YGK+ call them)
And I think people should understand the situation from the boy it wasn't his fault that his voice is like that. He just want to live like every other kid...fighting!!!😊👍👍

the first concern reminds me of a classmate i had, i always thought her voice was odd but i didn't care to ask or bother her about it, but one time she told her story to the class, when she was a kid she swallowed an earring and it affected her vocal cords, she also talked about how she struggled with her voice but in the end she accepted and started to love this uniqueness.

The parents of that first boy must be just so glad their son survived, his voice as it is must be a reminder to them that he's still alive and with them every time they hear it. That other people mock him for it, or tell him to be quiet because they find his voice disturbing is so cruel.

I can’t be the only one who likes his voice. Since it’s not very loud, it’s very relaxing and being around him would be calming and that’s better than a lot of people in my school who scream when someone is right next to them. Plus, he’s very handsome which adds something lol but honestly I just really love the way his voice sounds

It really pisses me off when store owners or taxis charge more to foreigners. They're already spending a big chunk of money to be in their country, but they're still charged more. Are they not human just because they're from abroad? If people who say/do these things go to another country, I won't feel sorry if they're charged double. In my own country it can happen here and there with taxis, but not in stores or a big number of taxis. We're all still humans that live on the same freaking planet, and we don't choose to be born in some place. That's called FRAUD and EXTORTION.

It happens to foreigner a lot in many places. The thing is that they distinguish foreigners based on appearance because they are not a country of immigrants or a heterogeneous one at that.

Yeongyun, if you're reading the comments, here's my advice. Despite your "flaws" as you put it, you have a lot of strengths also. You're very handsome and a good listener. Don't concentrate on your voice being bad (although I love listening to you talk because you do have a great voice). Instead of that, play up your good parts. I may not have the best body but because I'm a good listener and don't care about how others look or sound, I have a heck of a lot of friends. You too could be like this. Don't hold back on things because of your voice. You can succeed at a lot of things. Concentrate on that. If people like you for what and who you are and not about your voice, surround yourself with those types of people and let the others go on about their business and don't concentrate on them. I think people who belittle and make of others are very insecure about themselves so they like to make others feel bad. And also there are a lot of jobs that you don't need your voice for. Take this into consideration for future jobs.
