- This video is part of the DVD "Air Show Special 2011", which is produced by the Swedish aviation film crew "TeamM", of which I'm part. For a few hours in the summer of 2011 we got to film this beautiful airplane and also do an interview with it's owner in Sweden, Mr. Jon Roth. That summer I also fell in love with another airplane, the S-38 Sikorsky, owned and operated by Mr. Tom Schrade. Enjoy! /Tille, TeamM

Just thought I would give an update on N2801. We still own the plane and we moved back to the USA about 5 years ago, bringing the Staggerwing to our new home at Willis Gliderport in South Florida. It is presently undergoing a full restoration - which we knew it would need when we originally bought it years ago. Lots of wood repairs to the wings, tail and control surfaces now complete and covered through clear. I have been working on the airframe for the past year, repainting the tubular structure and replacing about 75% of the fuselage wood. Every single glue joint needed cleaning and regluing - 80+ years later. Most plywood is new, but I have been able to salvage almost all of the solid wood. My intention was always to keep as much of the Beechcraft wooden parts as safely possible.
All the 1930s cloth covered wiring is gone, the panel is new and functional and I have been working on replacing all of the control cables. Normally this is not big deal, but I somehow got it into my head that I needed to ditch the modern nicopress sleeves and to revert to the original factory/industry method of using a 5 tuck navy splice.... quickly turns a 5 minute job into a 2 hour job - more when you screw it up and have to start over!
Still have wiring, sheet metal work, covering and interior to go!
Any year now.
Best
Jon
Thank you Mister Jon for the great update. We love hearing about these interesting fixes and problems you encounter. It would be great to hear about the planes performance data. Additionally, if you wouldn’t mind how many in existence and in general what is the market value as a collectable, if thats not too intrusive.
Thank you.
Thanks for the update
Hi I’m Jon’s son Jonathan Roth I think in total there are 150 beech Staggerwing still registered. the aircraft is still not completed due to the passing of my father. we are looking for someone who is able to complete the aircraft.
Best wishes Jonathan Roth
I had a Ravell Model of this plane when I was a kid. I always loved 1930s art deco design, whether it was applied to cars, clothing, architecture or airplanes.
David Smith ... Wish I had a model now.
Kokomo?
Absolutely beautiful piece of machinery!!
My Grandfather owned one. N18785. He was featured in Sport Aviation 12-66 & Flying 6-59.
I flew with him a few times. Fantastic Airplane!!!! ❤️
There is something inherently beautiful about this plane.
My grandfather flew a Staggerwing (NC14408) in the Civil Air Patrol in 1942 at Coastal Air Base 4 in VA. The "Lear jet of its day".
GREAT ✈. THANKS FOR MAKING THE VIDEO. ☺👍🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
This is an absolutely beautiful aircraft. Thank you for sharing your knowledge.
What a timeless design...
It is very beautiful almost as beautiful as a P51!!
Beechcraft hit the ball right out of the park on their first time at bat.
Thanks so much for sharing this video. It has to be the most beautiful bird I have ever seen.
Ronald Rocheleau .. yep. And the C195.
Never to be exceeded classics.
Beautiful aircraft. Thanks for sharing....they have a HUGE rudder!
johnny liebling ... This one is a Jacobs engine about 330 h.p. with the fuel injection upgrade. Later models had Pratt and Whitney R985 with 450 hp. Better have a big rudder.
Very nice. Many thanks.
I worked in the Aeronautical Engineering department at Beech in Wichita, Kansas. We were very proud of the fact that the Beech 17 was the first aircraft in the world to adhere to laminar flow. The Beech 17 could not be improved using Navier Stokes equations. Noting the design of the Beech 17 was conducted with slide rules and brute force mathmatics in the mind. We all sat in awe of the truly great engineering of Walter Beech.
This has such a nice modern flair while being so classic i dont know why this design didnt do well for in my opinion even as someone who isnt a hardcore aviation enthusiast this looks so stunning
If I owned a plane like that, I'd dress-up thirties style to fly it every day-suit, tie and fedora.
Do they still sell these planes? Most probably not, but wouldn't I have liked to get one...
gorgeous airplane
1940 Beech F17D, sn 392, NC2801, with Jacobs engine upgraded with fuel injection. US deregistered and shipped to Sweden in 2008. 140 kts at 55 lph fuel consumption.
Later models had Pratt and Whitney R985 of 450 h.p.
Thanks Jon. Hope you're still enjoying her often.
Flew ours with a 450 P&W, 385 Jacobs and 345 Jacobs. Amazingly performance in the air was very similar, but economy greatly favored the small Jacobs. Learned to fly in that plane. Was an albatross meaning horrible on the ground but incredible in the air.
There is a window in the floor to check gear down . Very fast airplane.
A thing of beauty is a joy forever...!
This plane belonged to my grandfather sometime before the current owner. I've made many trips in this plane and flown it once it twice. It is great to come watch this video on occasion as it brings back many memories. Thank you!
Hi Jason do you have any info on this Staggerwing ? We got it in Seattle a while ago. ref my answer below to someone else said it belonged to his grandfather. Any feedback would be appreciated. thanks Marie
@@mary2poppins2 that was my twin brother. What info do you want? I flew in it many times. He owned two houses in Seattle and flew between them frequently. He flew the stagger wing on occasion but had a smaller Stinson that was more a utility plane. The plane won many awards at fly ins he would attend and at one point he had a small model plane that was nearly identical to the full size
@@jasonh3030 any info is just interesting. we know it belonged way back then to the Dupont family (paint). We still have the awards and the mini staggering it also needs to be restored though.
Awesome!
Hi mourajohnUSA. You are most welcome. I myself is also very grateful to Jon Roth for giving us the oportunity to do this short video, and to film this beautiful airplane! If you subscribe you will get a message each time I upload a new aviation video. All the best./Tille, TeamM
Beautiful aircraft 👏👏👏
The perfect aircraft to load up the tent, and gear, go to Oshkosh, and camp with your plane.
Bluenose352 ... YesSir
Too much congestion at OshKosh. On the ground and in the air.
Always great to watch a Staggerwing fly. Actually though...Beech resigned from Curtis-Wright, (they had acquired Travel Air in 1929) in Feb/March 1932 and returned to Wichita to start building the Model 17 in the closed Cessna factory.
I was shocked when I saw one of these land at Valkaria AP in Brevard County Fl one of only 200 remaining it was beautiful and obviously well maintained
Between March and April 1942, I was a boy refugee aged 7 living in a house below the take-off path of the Santa Cruz Airport Bombay India. Some mornings around 9 a.m. a white Beechcraft Stagger Wing would fly low overhead with a loud melodious sound. I wonder if it was the INA VT-AKK.
Im the kid in the video.
... would love to fly in one of these.
Charming.
This Staggerwing is a Jacobs powered airplane, check out the braced tail.
B Watkins... You're right. Jacobs upgraded with fuel injection. See my other comment details.
My grandfather did the restoration on nc2801 in this video back in the day. Hope it still is in the air.
My grandfather used to fly NC2801 from Texas to Mexico in the late 40’s.
Hi we got it In Seattle many years ago, maybe from your grandfather? If you have any information we would love to have it. We restarted to restore it. Unfortunately my husband just recently passed away from cancer and we could not finish it. He did an amazing job and I have done all the fabric work. My son absolutely loves it. We will try to finish it with some help and hopefully he will be able to fly it again in his memory. jon was an aviator, a real barnstormer like form old days. we always had adventures. The Staggerwing was his absolute favorite plane. Fly high Jon to blue skies?
@@mary2poppins2 ya you bought it from my grandpa in Seattle before he moved like 20 years ago probably. What all is left on the re-restoration?
BRASIL OK.
Love this design. Would like to see a little more of the interior. The stripe placement seems to change from plane to plane. Also noticed the cutout on the wheel covers. Is this just because she is an older aircraft? Thanks mate.
the10thleper .. retractable gear. Look carefully the bottom edge folds outward
for ground clearance. Folds flat when retracted.
Good video, beautiful aircraft, however, why did you not explain the aeronautical challenges comment relative to the staggered wing design ?
It was a great video, and thanks SO MUCH for the answer I was looking for. Why was it called the "Staggerwing"? You provided it! Take care of the aircraft and our country's history. Dan
This guy has the same voice as jordan peterson
How fast did it fly?
What model is this beautiful bird? Looks like a G or S...
4lifeifly ... D model. With 7 cyl. Jacobs engine upgraded with fuel injection. 330 hp ?
@@hotrodray9884 its actually a F17s sn 392 with a jacobs 7cyl radial engine
@@hotrodray9884 f17d model s/n 392 with fuel injected Jacobs 330
