    Just a tip for you always and i mean always disconnect the battery if possible else one slip will cost you the laptop as there is power still flowing on the main board.

      William Rogers yes indeed, thanks for mentioning that. I pinned your comment.

      Glad to help, seen some of your thermal replacements and noticed that this step wasn't done so thought i'd point it out, even when i did my GPU upgrade on MSI GT72-6QD the first thing i did was remove the battery. But a simple step for your Followers is simply Un screw and remove the back plate then promptly go to remove the battery before touching anything on the board. All will be fine after. But i do have a question with Liquid Metal does one have to repaste both the Heatsink Exchanger and the Die or can it just be pasted on the die?

    • @OWNORDISOWN
      @OWNORDISOWN  7 лет назад +1

      William Rogers I found just placing it on the die is enough. I'm fairly new with liquid metal and I don't like the idea of a bunch of it migrating to other parts of the laptop..

    Stephen, something that NOBODY on youtube did is compare the different pens you can use with this (lenovo's own vs bamboo ink vs matepen etc etc). I think a lot of us would watch that!!! Thanks, PM

    Maybe the gpu temp increase wasn't Thermal Grizzly's fault. Maybe it increased because more of the cpu heat was being dumped into the shared cooling system, thus overwhelming the two tiny heatsinks. I would bet that conductonaut on the GPU would drop the temps, but they might still be higher than stock.

    • @OWNORDISOWN
      @OWNORDISOWN  7 лет назад

      Yes, you are probably right Noah. Perhaps I'll try that at some point.

    Good video, I would suggest making your graphs less deceiving. A difference of 6 degrees (5:47) should not result in the bar graph losing a quarter of its size, it'll make you look like you're being deceiving with your graph.

    I really enjoyed this just because I'm learning about this new type of paste. Sounds a bit more detailed to apply but truly works better than the paste I've used in the past. Thanks Stephen!!!

      Greg Simpson Thanks Greg! It is much harder to spread, I found that dragging its top layer so it wets the heat spreader surface was best, just light strokes otherwise it just balls up and moves around, lol.

    U probably know this by now, but ill mention it for anyone curious.
    The gpu temps went up because they use the same heatsink. Because the cpu temp went down so much, the heat transferred to the heatsink, which at this point, can no longer take in more heat, and it does the opposite, which is why the gpu ends up warmer

    • @OWNORDISOWN
      @OWNORDISOWN  7 лет назад

      Jerome Ley yes, I have mentioned many times on numerous videos that shared heat sink designs are poor. If you watch my Aorus x3 v7 review/repasting you can see clearly that it struggles to cope with the i7 7820hk cpu.

      OWNorDisown I have, but haven’t had much success. My thought is that I am using integrated graphics (limited to a couple games) for now. I was thinking this might be putting even more strain on the cpu since I don’t have a dedicated gpu.

    • @OWNORDISOWN
      @OWNORDISOWN  6 лет назад +1

      Yes, it will do. You can undervolt the integrated GPU part too. Its a shame you cannot increase the fan speed. I'm going to do a video testing one of those graphite thermal pads...

Hearing some mixed reviews on forums but for that price I think I should definitely check it out. I have the Thinkpad 460 and could use some extra juice for Maya and Zbrush. Love having pen input. Hey just thought i would come back to this, received my 720 15" us model same as yours, had watched your videos before and was curious.
    After some minor experimenting ive found that my cpu runs cooler with the intel 630 graphics completely disabled making for a better gaming experience, so far running medium settings in world of tanks on 4k works fine as long as the laptop is sitting on a breathable surface, ive also found that it runs a bit cooler when using another keyboard and mouse with the keyboard facing down and the vents facing up, the screen being closer is nice as well!

    • @OWNORDISOWN
      @OWNORDISOWN  7 лет назад

      Chunfucious good tips mate! I never thought about playing with the keyboard facing down, lol, but great idea. Did you disable the Intel GPu in device manager? I tried that on that Gigabyte P57xv7 and it became super sluggish, don't know why, or is there a different method to disable it?

    • @dirtyK4894
      @dirtyK4894 7 лет назад

      OWNorDISOWN super funny, I actually disabled it, played three matches in world of tanks each on different settings and watched afterburner, It worked great and then I restarted the game and it's super sluggish, gonna do a bit more research!

      Its interesting, the 1050 is dropping out every 10 seconds or so when not in game, like the integrated is trying to take over for regular desktop duties, I bet that 630 is a CPU resource hog!

  • @paulnero3885

    Your assumption that the GPU temps go up because of the thermal paste is not quite right. As the heatsink can remove a lot more heat from the CPU with the conductonaut, all of it gets transported over the GPU to the fans and this way the heat is transfered to the GPU which gets hotter. This effect most likely would have been even worse with Conductonaut on the GPU.

  • @DesmondMoyden
    @DesmondMoyden 7 лет назад +2

    Can't see in the video, after you remove the original thermal paste: Are the heat sinks copper or aluminum? I see that there is an aluminum block surrounding the pipes, but what is the material touching the chips?

    • @OWNORDISOWN
      @OWNORDISOWN  7 лет назад +1

      Its the same black coated material as the heat pipes, well, that is what I assumed it to be ! Hopefully it is !

    • @OWNORDISOWN
      @OWNORDISOWN  7 лет назад

      I just looked up the bimetallic corrosion possibility of copper and aluminum (www.npl.co.uk/upload/pdf/bimetallic_20071105114556.pdf) . I think it is unlikely they would have both metals touching each other in a paste situation as according to the chart they have a good risk of corrosion..Thats if I am reading it correctly..

      I can take apart this weekend to double check.

    • @DesmondMoyden
      @DesmondMoyden 7 лет назад

      The reason I asked is: I took apart and re-pasted an older laptop this weekend and the heat sink surface touching the chip was Aluminum, so I was glad that I wasn't planing to use the CLU compound, just regular carbon based paste. So looking at your video today, reminded me of that, and I was curious if in your case you made sure that the heat sink was copper before you applied the CLU compound.

    • @OWNORDISOWN
      @OWNORDISOWN  7 лет назад +2

      Denis Males I gave it a good hard look. I'm going to check it over and see if there was any reaction. You can test it too by using vinegar and salt water I believe too..

  • @alexgobeli4275
    @alexgobeli4275 7 лет назад

    It would be interesting to see this test again with the GPU having the same thermal paste. since the heat pipes are shared that may help reduce CPU temps just a little more.

    Thanks for the review again. I am returning a second XPS 15 9560 (if it's not coil whine, it's backlight bleeding, etc. etc. etc.). Now I am officially done with Dell and the XPS line and I'm looking out for a new machine again. This WAS on the list, but from what I understand the thermals suck. Does it get hot with heavy gaming only ? What about normal (heavy, but non gaming) use ?

    • @OWNORDISOWN
      @OWNORDISOWN  7 лет назад +2

      Lex Gabrees in my handbrake test with turbo boost disabled it went up to 73 degrees which is great. Activating turbo boost with no undervolt 86 degrees, undervolt it dropped to 80. If you leave it running at max 2.8 ghz it is fine but want to allow it to boost to 3.8 you'll need that undervolt.

  • @Keeeeeeeeeeev
    @Keeeeeeeeeeev 6 лет назад

    thanks a lot for the video. What are the conditions of th heatsink on the liquid metal side cpu? I know it is corrosive on alumin not copper but I feel still a bit uncomfortable with the idea of using it on my yoga 720 15" (even if I' m in love with t drops it's capable of) because of the black surface around the copper part which seems to cover the rest allumium portion of the heatsink. If that black painted frame extends on the copper contact site I'm for sure more relaxed. I would't want to risk and mess up with the aluminium surroundings
    Also it is not clear to me how the liquid metal behaves (how much aggressive is ) over the long term on the core die. Does it leave any evident signs (even slight compared with the traditinal solutions?)
    - Repasting with liquid metal would void the warranty ?
    -Instead of using electrical tape wouldn't it be even better to use thermalpads with a proper thikness as protection and a possible further slight improvement on the overall heat dissipation capacity?
    - About thermalpads. Someone pointed out, given you are on the way opening it up, to change the factory thermal pads as well with something of higher performances. What are your opinions about, and in case what brand of Thermal pad would you recommend?
    - About thermalpads the second. =) premising I haven't opened my 720 yet, looking at disassebling picture and videos made me wonder if applinyg some other thermal pads between the metal bottom panel and the heatpipes (given the ,apperent at least, little room inbetween, could be an easy and cheap way to improve the passive heat dissipation. What are your toughts about?
    Out of the warranty period or with a 2nd heatpipe available would be terribly satisfying messing around soldering some extra heatpipes and find out an elegant custom solution to better take advantage of the untapped passive dissipation capacity the bottom metal panel could offer.

    • @OWNORDISOWN
      @OWNORDISOWN  6 лет назад +1

      Hi Kevin, I like your thinking about putting pads between the heat pipes and the bottom panel - interesting idea !
      People have recommended Fujipoly pads so they may be worth a try.
      I recently looked at the condition of the liquid metal on the heat sink and it wasn't crusty which I was half expecting to see. There was some discolouration on the heatsink though.
      Someone recommended to use Kapton tape instead:
      www.amazon.com/Heat-Temperature-Resistant-Adhesive-Electric/dp/B00W3FAFP0/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1518057703&sr=8-4&keywords=kapton+tape&dpID=41remhS2vSL&preST=_SX342_QL70_&dpSrc=srch
      My main advice on doing this is to use as little as possible liquid metal to make sure it doesn't run onto the pcb.
      Perhaps start with some good regular paste first like Gelid GC Extreme and see what results you get.
      I did a test on my Sager NP 9873 and there wasn't much between them.
      Here is that video:
      ruclips.net/video/1u_CXoQzNNg/видео.html

    • @Keeeeeeeeeeev
      @Keeeeeeeeeeev 6 лет назад

      yeah Hope it will be a good idea! I'll let you know guys in case I proceed with the experiment maybe after some prior calculation and estimates. Problem is the heatpipes seem to be isoleted with that black painting wich of course has to be scratched away and I'm worried that interferes with the warranty validity.
      Undervolting helped a lot but obviously is not enough!! (mine seems to stay preatty stable at -150 mV on cpu core, gpu, cache, system agent and analog I/O but I have to test it out further more. I don't have much time available with university. I' ve noticed, if I'm not wrong, the fast ramping up of the termperatures decrese a lot the undervolting headroom).
      Onother idea to evaluate are the relatively new 1 mm thick sheet heatpipes used on new smartphone but I haven't figured out yet their actual performance order of magnitude. Anyway I want that metal bottom panel to be used as a passive heatsink!!=D
      I love the 720 15" but saying the thermal performances are bad is an euphemism really! A little bit more of engineering would have been enough to place some more more powerful heatpipes dear Lenovo!

      You won't see any increase in FPS unless it is boosting higher. Have you tried overclocking it? As far as temperature goes my GTX 1050 didn't get hot. BF1 is the hottest at 89 degrees and that is overclocked
      What are your temps?

    • @espsixstrings

      I haven't tried over clocking it because I'm fairly new to this. This is my first laptop with a dedicated graphic card.
      Recently undervolted the CPU -0.140 and I'll reach max temps when using the xtu stress test at about 78c
      GPU 70-75c indoors.
      Now I am only getting my temperatures from monitoring xtu's min/max/avg stats.

    So you leave the electrical tape on? Never used LM, saw a couple vids but like they used 1/4 as ;much as you did and lightly brushed it out. I kinda wanna try it but would prob do it to like my lil pc in case I screw up lol!

      bigbenisdaman Yeh, I left it on as it has a max temperature limit of 105 degrees C and I am paranoid it leaks out and shorts out something. This was only my second LM one. My Aorus x3 v7 seems to have survived, lol. It is very hard to spread, I found that using a que tip and lightly brushing the top surface the best so it gradually wets the surface. Takes some practice.. Go for it!

      Ah, i was just thinking like electric tape don't really hold well over time but it's prob fine. And yea, i'd be paranoid it would leak lol! If i can get the issues with my GL 502 vs i might do it on it after I try on lil pc and main pc, for practice and all.

      I actually did one a while ago. It would be nice if they did allow us to change the fan speed, they should do so but probably won't as they want to be in full control of it I guess. Here is my video on it being repasted: ruclips.net/video/F0nyLA-65sU/видео.html

      OWNorDISOWN Tech Decisions Made Easy dang sorry to hear about that. I went ahead and undervolted mine like you suggested in one of your videos. Approx - 113mv on the core, cache and igpu. It's stable. However I havent tested to see if there is any difference in performance although I feel I'm getting slightly better battery life. One thing I did notice is that I can't use after burner to undervolt the 1050. Any suggestions?

    • @OWNORDISOWN
      @OWNORDISOWN  7 лет назад +1

      Boii for me it has to be the Lenovo as I use the pen a lot. If you are not using the pen nor need the 2-1 it may depend on price but the xps cpu is clocked corrupt of the box so no disabling turbo boost so that is a big plus for me..

    • @ps3guy22
      @ps3guy22 7 лет назад

      Oh wow, ok, that makes sense why you would chose the Lenovo. What do you mean by clocked corrupt? I have a dell XPS 15 and never heard of that issue. Do you talk about that in one of your videos?

    • @OWNORDISOWN
      @OWNORDISOWN  7 лет назад +1

      Boii sorry, auto spelling on my phone. I was typing on one hand as I walked the dog! It meant to say that the Lenovo disables turbo boost so in cpu work you get a 30% performance hit unless you enable it then you are faced with temperature issues. The XPS 15 has turbo boost enabled so it will be faster out of the box. I haven't tried one to see how hot it gets though. I use the pen all the time. To be honest I do prefer my Surface Book as it is so small and light. Hope that helps!

      Oh lol... That definitely helps. My XPS 15 used to thermal throttle a lot last year, but I undervolted and re-pasted it and that left some thermal room for me to overclock the 960m buy 135MHz on the core and 700MHz on the memory.

      I think they feel that the average user will not notice these flaws, and that's enough for them to keep on going the way they do. We saw it happen with Dell and the XPS and probably more brands as well.
      The truth is, that they make people pay a certain amount of money for something that is flawed, while they know it. They are just misleading and fooling customers ... That's what it comes down to in the end.

      One last question, what's the heat sink made of for the yoga 720 and will it corrode over time?

      Michael Lee after 7 months my heatsink was not corroded, it was discoloured, like a stain. It wasn't brittle like you would get with aluminum so I suspect it is copper

    You should try to undervolt, too :)

      I did- i included those results in the video...It's a tough one to cool down, lol. My conclusion stands - for gaming disable turbo boost, undervolt and ideally repaste with liquid metal and game in a refrigerator :)

      Bit disappointing on the GPU eh! I'd like to see results with the liquid metal on the GPU as you'd think it would bring the CPU down even more. Maybe post a short update video when you get hold of some more!

    why does the stupid company didn't use good paste at first place, can ramp up their performance and quality hence not costing much for these type of thing. damned piece of shit rock mind.
    Good video, perhaps all those 1080 graphic and power booster new laptop need to repaste for every customer.. so what for pay them so much $$$ for their laptop

      Thanks, glad you found it useful ! What I was pissed about was that they disabled turbo boost to keep it cool. Very sneaky. They would have been better to have used better paste, increase fan speed a bit and undervolt perhaps..
