في قصة بلعام بن باعوراء، نرى كيف أن الإيمان بالله تعالى والالتزام بطاعته هو الضمانة الوحيدة للسعادة في الدنيا والآخرة.
كان بلعام بن باعوراء رجلًا تقيًا، وقد تعلم على يد نبي الله موسى عليه السلام. وكان يعرف أن الله تعالى لن يسمح له بتدمير بني إسرائيل، مهما حاول أحد أن يغريه على ذلك.
لكن بلعام رضوخ لإغراء المال، فوافق على أن يذهب مع رسل ملك موآب. وعندما وصل إلى الجبل الذي يُطْلِعُهُ على معسكر بني إسرائيل، حاول أن يدعو عليهم، لكن الله تعالى ردَّ عنه دعوته، وجعل لسانه ينطق بالخير لهم.
فأدرك بلعام أنه لا يستطيع أن يدعو على بني إسرائيل، ففكر في مكرٍ آخر، فأمر قومه أن يُزَيِّنُوا نساءهم ويعطوهن السلع للبيع ويرسلوهن إلى معسكر بني إسرائيل، ولا تمنع امرأة نفسها ممن يريدها.
فدخلت النساء المعسكر، فأخذ أحد أشراف بني إسرائيل امرأةً منهم وأتى بها إلى موسى عليه السلام، فقال له: أظنك تقول هذا حرام فوالله لا نطيعك، ثم أَدْخَلَهَا خَيْمَتَهُ فوقع عليها.
فأنزل الله تعالى الطاعون على بني إسرائيل بسبب زنا ذلك الرجل، وقيل أنه قد هلك سبعون ألفاً في تلك الساعة.

Balaam ben Beor was a pious man who had studied under the prophet Moses. He knew that God would never allow him to destroy the Israelites, no matter how hard anyone tried to tempt him to do so.
However, Balaam succumbed to the temptation of money and agreed to go with the messengers of the king of Moab. When he reached the mountain that overlooked the camp of the Israelites, he tried to curse them, but God turned him away and made his tongue speak good of them.
Balaam realized that he could not curse the Israelites, so he devised another plan. He ordered his people to adorn their women and give them merchandise to sell, and to send them to the camp of the Israelites. He also told them not to refuse themselves to any man who wanted them.
The women entered the camp, and one of the leaders of the Israelites took one of them and brought her to Moses. He said, "I think you say this is forbidden, by God I will not obey you," and he took her into his tent and slept with her.
God sent a plague on the Israelites because of the man's fornication, and it is said that seventy thousand people died in that hour.
