Thanks for fixing that reel for me...I bought it in the condition it was in tried to use it and found the problem...that you have diagnosed and fixed...thank you very much!!
I’ve seen oscillation gears that were in pieces but I’ve never seen just the stud on the gear get reamed off. I think you are absolutely correct that someone over cranked this reel just as what probably caused the smashed oscillation gears I’ve seen on a few reels. I’ve even had just the oscillation block itself crack into several pieces probably caused by the same over cranking to pull out a snag on the line. Thank goodness the parts are available for this Penn. The parts weren’t available for the vintage reels of mine that failed like this. At least it only happened three times and I got a full refund. Great diagnostic video Dennis! - Chris
I think that I normally assume that it is either a broken crosswind block to the secondary gear on the back of the main drive that is the culprit. This was a first for me as well. Best wishes Chris - Dennis
Maybe another victim of the no stretch character of braid? I broke a “pot metal” main gear in half once yanking on an “underwater obstruction” while using braid that was way to strong for the inexpensive reel (Silstar) reel. Amazingly a replacement was available… and it was stamped😀.
That always reminds me to tell folks to wrap the line around the butt of the rod and pull to try and free the snag. Trying to power out will ruin something. I used to say wrap it around the knife handle, but then you don't have anything to cut the line if you can't pull out of the jam - Thanks
Pickings was slim at the flea market, only found an 8 ft 2 piece Daiwa spinning rod, and a trolling rod with a metal butt with a gimbal cross, with a beautiful 285 on it, got those because rods are hard to get because of shipping them. I also saw a rod with a Penn 149, unfortunately he knew what he had. Still not bad for fly fishing country, Happy 4th
