Robinson fought in an era where they often had anywhere from 5-15 fights a year. Lots of sparring and exhibitions. Goes to show how Robinson mastered the sweet science, he wasn't just standing there slugging it out every match or he'd be a slurred wreck.

It's funny, neither of them would have subscribed to your worldview. They had no interest in being "black excellence" or "black men." This is not an attack at all. They simply wanted to be men of excellence. They liked being role models to blacks but their goal was to push all people to be their best and to be people of high morals and duty. Sugar Ray was very gracious and respectful of his friend Joe Louis, but in reality, it was Joe Louis who said that Sugar Ray was unquestionably the best fighter pound for pound that he had ever seen. And later, Ali would say the same.
Whoever was fortunate enough to be in the room that day with these two Icons were very lucky people. The Aura of greatness surrounding these legends was off the charts. Sugar Ray Robinson was absolutely the greatest pound for pound boxer ever. IMO, if Joe Louis and Muhammed Ali fought while both were in their primes, it may have been a draw or an extremely close decision one way or the other. I count them as one two of the greatest heavyweight champions ever. And, it could flip flop from day to day as to who was the best.

Remember also, SRR hated boxing, he realised it was one sport where he could get paid very well if he used his natural athletic attributes (he was a talented dancer with great balance and rhythm before he learned to box properly) and quick thinking mind to max effect.
