In my point off view Birds resembles piece, love and freedom and this scene was one of the most beautiful things i have hear and see! In this Movieseries they're kinda Angels from the heaven and comes to the rescue just in time before darkness takes over
In the movie, Bilbo was shown as being unnaturally courageous for a hobbit and his personal character. Although he will prove himself more than worthy later in the story, he would have never engaged orcs or wargs on his own (providing that's actually canon story, not just Jackson invention). He was almost always under Dori's protection.
The largest eagle that has ever lived is Haast's eagle. It is the only eagle in the world ever to have been top predator of its ecosystem. Though it is now extinct, it lived in New Zealand.
The Witch King of Angmar was not only not present in Dol Guldur, but also never killed. Although defeated in a campaign against men, he fled to Mordor along with the other Nazguls. Glorfindel, which also appears in the LOTR books, but not in the movies, prophesied that the Witch King will not die by the hand of a man. This gives reason to Eowyn's triumph over him (she was not a man).
It was not Bilbo who stalled for time during the trolls scene. It was Gandalf and his much better lines, rather than talking about parasites-filled dwarves. Gandalf was fully aware of The Necromancer's aka Sauron existence long before the movie. So was the White Council. Thorin, although a prince, never mocked or criticized Bilbo as he did in the movie. He was also nowhere near as suspicious and rude towards Elrong as he is depicted in the film.
Of course, there are many other differences, not all of them important, which support my statement. If you don't believe me, read the book or read it again, if you've already have. And this was just the first movie. From what I've read, in the next ones Jackson will invent characters that don't exist at all in Tolkien's mythology or bring others who don't actually make an appearance the story of this particular book.
Well, let's see. First and foremost, Azog's presence. He was killed in The Battle of Azanulbizar long before the events from The Hobbit take place. His appearance in the movie is extremely redundant and contrary to the original story. Also, it was not Thorin who slew Azog in the battle I've mentioned, but Dain Ironfoot, his relative. Radagast was only mentioned once in the whole book, as being one of the wizards. He never made an appearance, not to mention that questionable rabbit sled scene.
+Matrix1240 The Greatest Eagle was Thorondor. He had a wingspan of 180 feet, which is immense! He was the greatest, so the others would be roughly the size shown in the movies. I think they did well with the sizing because it doesn't show the Eagles to be invincible- but still strong none the less :)
And you know PJ personally? Spare me! The difference between you and me is that you can't appreciate a book and the amount of work put into it. I fully understand adaptation and that you have to change some minor details in order to make the movie enjoyable. You can't literally transpose a book to a movie, because the sheer amount of detail would tire viewers, but also can't change the plot to such an extent as PJ did in this case. By the way, I loved the LOTR movies, which are infinitely better
Oh, it's wrong on so many levels. So far, Jackson managed to destroy much of the story of this great book. From what I've seen, in the next two movies, the story will be further massacred for the sake of profit. That is VERY wrong!

Such a beautiful scene. I can watch it over and over. Did anyone else realise the mountain is shaped like a bear???

Oh my goodness. It is amazing. the music and the eagles!. It is a journey into Shamanistic power-animal experiences. :)

This happened a lot differently in the book

I've read that the great eagles are supposed to be much bigger than what we see in the film.
