Transcript (shortened):
What if I told you there was one thing you might have been doing regularly in BDO that was wasting your time?
Contribution points, satisfied workers and Cooking experience: Beer feeds three birds with one grain. But technically, it’s 5 grains. And this is where the trouble lies. Beer is a horribly inefficient use of grains. In comparison to the 5 units of grain in Beer, Vinegar only uses 1. That’s 5 times more crafts from the same amount of grains.
Grains are actually a bottleneck resource in the BDO economy. You get grains from workers at nodes and nothing else. When your server is out of grains, it’s out. And the Central Marketplace is only gonna restock if everyone’s nodes outproduce the region-wide demand. Realistically, nobody is gonna head to the corn fields around Calpheon and gather corn to replenish their grain supplies. It’s simply not worth the active playtime.
The market prices reflect these circumstances. In Europe, Potatoes are at their max price of 1510 silver and frequently sold out. According to the BDO API, the lowest potato price in the last 90 days was at 1390 silver. That’s not that far from the max price.
So, let’s not disrespect the scarcity and cost of grains by making something like Beer from them. Unless, of course, there is no way around it. Upon taking a closer look at the profit per hour at different masteries, we can see that Cooking Beer is always a loss.
A new player would have around 350 Cooking Mastery from Artisan 1 Cooking and TRI Loggia Accessories. That’s 15.8 million Silver per hour lost if the Beer is made from Potatoes at 1390 Silver, or a loss of 20.3 million Silver per hour at a Potato price of 1510.
For mid-tier and endgame players, the situation looks similarly dire. Beer is not profitable.
By the way, the Cooking Mastery variables “Max Dishes Chance”, “Higher Grade Chance” and “Mass Cooking Chance” scale independently, and with negative profit recipes, they sometimes cause an unexpected behavior. But let’s not overthink it; more Cooking Mastery is better than less Cooking Mastery and in practice, you’d make profitable recipes or at least have good reasons why you’d make unprofitable ones, so this is fine.
Anyways, it’s an open secret that Beer is really not worth making. Beginners don’t know this and look for guides on how to make Beer. As long as there is a search volume, content creators are going to make guides about it. I don’t think anyone has bad intentions, especially since not everyone makes these kinds of calculations.
But once you found out that Beer isn’t worth making, there is a bit of an incentive not to tell beginners. That’s because beer is an ingredient in Balenos Meals. And as long as Beginners are making their own Beer and selling their extras to the market, experienced players won’t have to cook their own Beer and make a loss. Making Beer for your Balenos Meals once the market is sold out: That and quest rewards are the only reasons why you’d want to make Beer.
But if Beer isn’t worth it, what should you make instead? Here are 3 better alternatives.
If your goal is Contribution Points and you want something low maintenance, I recommend Vinegar or Essence of Liquor. You can buy the Strawberries at the Fruit Vendor in Calpheon and the Sugar and Leavening Agent at a Cook or Tavern Owner NPC. Inspecting the silver per hour, this is looking much better. Depending on the market prices, it may be a profit or a loss, but it’s never as bad as Beer.
If your goal is feeding your workers and getting Cooking Experience, Grilled Bird Meat is the way to go. There are two nodes close to Velia that you should grab for eggs, and making Grilled Bird Meat is a nice way of making use of the Chicken. This recipe is also more cost-efficient than Beer. If you feel fancy and have a lot of extra CP lying around, there is another chicken and eggs node in Odylitta. My take on whether that’s worth it will be the topic of another video.
But of course, even Vinegar, Essence of Liquor and Grilled Bird Meat have a high opportunity cost. Whenever you are cooking these recipes, you are not making the real profit driver meals and their subrecipes. Right now, Balenos Meal, Valencia Meal, Mediah Meal and certain subrecipes are the most profitable choices with a sustainable output. Expect a guide about these soon; once I’m done I’ll link it below. When the Oasis Event ends, we expect additional recipes to join the current “big three” and their subrecipes.

⬇️ Click "Read more" below, this post has useful info ⬇️
The prices of Beer and Vinegar are linked together through the cost of grains. Essence of Liquor works a little differently because one more processing step is required for it (grind grains to flour). It's possible that few people are grinding flour, many people are spamming EoL for Contribution Points and barely anyone is using it for stuff like Date Palm Wine or Exotic Herbal Wine. This causes prices of Flour to skyrocket and of EoL to freefall. Then, even Beer might be a better option than EoL. This is happening in EU right now. To keep things simple, I didn't go too much into detail about EoL as an alternative to Beer in the video. As you can see, EoL can be a bit tricky, so please do some math with Summer's Market Cooking Sheet to double-check before you spam it for CP.
Thank you for reading 👌

Shhh, if everyone stops making beer, then we won’t be able to buy beer...
let's not exploit noobies :D also think about the cheaper grains when people don't feed their workers with beer anymore
@@Penemue is it a bad thing tho? You are in Clarity, to stay at the top for years u have to play dirty sometimes.
I thought this was a real life tutorial about beer. Wouldnt be surprised to see Heaven making tutorials for actual real life.
i think i wouldn't do it on a gaming channel :)
I've never found grains to be a bottleneck, it's always things like milk and cooking honey for me.
That depends on how much you cook and what you cook. The supply of grains is definitely limited by everyone's workers, you can't just go gather for an hour to replenish it. Cooking Honey is the same. Meanwhile, Milk is infinitely available, it just depends on how hard you try to get it (cows + turning in byproducts).
@@Penemue Not quite true as you cant infinitely gather on the milk and it's always out on CM so you limited by your energy. I can cook for 8 hours a day and still not run out of grains. Been doing so for the past wee on multiple characters to boost cooking levels.
Most people exchange some of their cooking byproducts for milk. Past 450 CP, it’s arguably not worth going for CP anymore (unless it has a lot of ideal value to you). Since there is no limit to how much you can cook, there is no limit to how much milk you can get either.
@@toshiroyamada2443 i read this again and i think i know why we misunderstood each other. i was taking a macroeconomic perspective and you were looking at your personal stash. of course, what one player does is insignificant and won't cause a bottleneck. but everyone cooking beer vs. barely anyone cooking beer on the server does make a difference. it takes a lot for grains to run out on a server for a while, but it is possible
@@toshiroyamada2443 1hr of gathering wolves is 12k red sauce crafts. Thats around 4k milk.
"...but lets not over think it"!!!!! priceless!!!!
It's an open secret that most bdo youtubers create guides to manipulate the market for their in game profit.
Here is another secret. Market changes, and opportunities open up. Making 100m+ an hour on console right now…..from beer.
Beer is maxed price range, but the cereals have dropped to absolute lows….
Dont mind me…just saving up for Balenos meals..
With 1150 cooking Mastery
NA server always has grains in the market. milk and meat is the annoying part
ohh man i didnt know after 2 year Beer are can be used as Balenos Meal, I can finally used my 80k beer for some profit now
Gotta make beer no matter what since balenos meal uses beer as one of its ingredients. I don't recommend using beer to ever feed workers. Instead, use grilled bird meat. It feeds more and is a lot easier to make. I literally got a stockpile of 1 million grilled bird meat (green) in my storage and won't ever run out.
if you can buy the beer of the market your profit is actually gonna go up, simply because you dont lose money cooking the beer and dont time on it either. so if you can, buy the beer
When the oasis event ends...
you are right tho if you used basic cooking utensil the profit margin will be different and you can't keep spamming a certain recipe coz it will be problematic if you ended up stockpiling a lot and cant sell. the market will sometimes be flooded with vinegar and essence of liquor but beer will always be easy to sell since its a bottleneck. but since the priority of beginners is to spam cooking this is a great tip for them
Imo for those who just started cooking I recommend them to spam vinegar and later on when they reach prof1 they could make pickled vegetable then sell it to imperial craft. Since pickled give quite considerable exp and its material isn't hard to get
I agreed with u brother. When I started cooking I was searching for reference about which should I make. But most of them said beer but I keep doing my research which one gives more exp and profit on the long way. That when I found vinegar is much more profitable then beer. Since all u need to do spam vinegar until prof1 then from then on just spam pickled vegetable all the way until u reach guru.Just started cooking about 3 or 4 weeks ago now Im already master 10 cooking. And dont forget to pack ur pickled vegetable to prof box then sell it to imperial craft delivery(depends on ur mastery but I think 350 mastery already gives a quite profit rather than sell it to marketplace). I hope my comment could reach to those who want to started cooking
You posted it under a video that reaches a lot of new players. So I think we’re good. I am planning some additional videos about cooking, too.
Is this still applicable today? I just started last week
@@rcane6842 yes it is still applicable until today, that beer still fall behind in terms of profit and long time investment from Vinegar and Grilled Bird Meat as beginner to cook
Whoa, just checked this google sheet and my more than 700k of Smoked Fish Steak is not such a stupid thing.
I highly recommend Grilled Bird Meat myself as im in a PVP guild and all my guildies also cook that as it requires less to make and personally I think you get more per cook on average than you do with Beer.
I really enjoy your content. Very good guides. Appreciate the time and effort you put forth to make them.
Some of us play console, which is far behind PC version. We just got Loggia 2 weeks ago. Always good to know whats going on in pc world, to stay ahead of the curve. ❤️
Thank you for your hard work putting together these guides. For me, bartering is basically the one reason I still spend some time cooking beer. I use grilled chicken to feed the workers, but the barter exchanges for beer seems pretty sweet, especially when you regularly get an exchange for high demand saps. I have not done the math for opportunity cost or anything, but has that made it into your calculations at all for making beer worthwhile?
I don’t consider opportunity cost because it is different for each player. Buying beer for bartering from the AH should be better than making it yourself.
Thank you.
Same high quality supreme commander analysis, but somehow its no longer about strategy and mass/energy conversion for intergalactic war, but producing vegetables for a fantasy catgirl game. I'm confused but not disappointed.
main difference between bdo and sc is that bdo has players and it is growing 👍
Marketplace and nodes are not the only sources of grains. You can plant grains in farms if you really need to. Just fyi.
Nobody does that though, the opportunity cost is way too high :(
@@Penemue on your server perhaps. ; )
At 1:06 , is there a spreadsheet that shows an items highest price and lowest price history over a year ? By the way thanks for all the great BDO content. Have learned so much 💪💪💪
Not that I’m aware of, sorry
The secret is I drink more beer while playing this game so I don't smash my head on the keyboard than I do making it myself.
You could argue that farming for cooking beer is worth using the improve breed method since they take up one spot. 1 blue wheat is 5 reg wheat. I personally spam vinn and use witchs for beer I need for my weekly balanos meals and use the rest of the witchs for selling milk since I hit 400cp soft cap.
hi, i know im a bit late to the party but i was wondering on how to use this api you mentioned. i dont understand it basically. awesome information though!
hi, it's best to ask on veliainn discord (see pinned comment)
Good to know, you need always corn's for milktea at cooking Master or honeycookies. So take your first cp for workers for chicken and eggs 👍
Narcion node isn't bad, theres grapes and potatoes on the way so -1 effective cp cost, got another 15 cp waiting to be used anyway 😂
I still did not get what is the secret about Beer.
i made and sold beer until just 3 daays ago RIP
You are a saint omg ;A;
d'aww :D
This is all because of BDO's stupid max price on the market. It's like no one told the devs how basic economics works...
What if I'm just making beer specifically for my workers? Like 2000 units every other month or so? Am I losing that much money in grains? Cuz I have almost every grain node.
It’s probably better to feed your workers with grilled bird meat and sell the grains if you don’t use them
At least you can sell all your beer in no time at all. I've made 1kk vinegar in May 2021 to farm some CP and still trying to get rid of it.
@Heaven I am new and JUST started a 3 worker potato farming operation out of Velia yesterday with the intent on making beer. Would it be an OK profit to sell the raw product (potatos)?
(Im in sea reg) if u sell beer then its massive loss to make as selling raw grain is same profit but if u r making them for ur guru meal then its so-so its still best to turn in W.D for beers after u reach G1 for B.meal and around 400cp as beer/milk per W.D beers wins u can switch between whaterver u needed as i navwer out of milk thanks to bonus events. i naver done beer in lot till i hit M15 with 620 mastery and blowen 25k grain its not realy good but W.D and few bonous event i got 3x1000 milk make up then profit but i still feel it will be best if i go viniger with grain as i dont want to invaste cp in grain BY the way good video thubs up
that is, unless you are on SEA server
What do you mean?
@@Penemue beer cooking is a profit in sea server even at my mastery of only 950
@@ClayToTreasure that's very interesting, i hope people from SEA do the math or check the comment section
yeah 5 grain on beer is a loos thats why i chang it to Griiled bird meat instead and the grain gather from node just betr use in pn processong to make flou on dought much profitable
beer is needed for balenos meals and therefore always worth it
where can i download that api?
please go to velia inn discord (should be linked in video description / top comment) and ask the people there. you need a software called insomnia
@@Penemue thanks
WOW ! U discovered hot water !

"you cant get it anywhere else but nodes" or farms, or gathering it
also, sold out ? you found a 1 day period where it wasnt on the market ? was there an event ? cause all kinda beer materials are overflowing the market for a looong time
basically what you suggest ? ppl stop making beer to sell, but sell the raw potatoes so ppl buy that instead of the beer and they cook the beer for themselves ?
also any material you have and sell without cooking is a waste, no delicacy, no xp, no mastery procs, no quest procs
did you have a couple million beer you wanted to sell and wanted to influence the market ?
rly dont see the lesson in this vid :D
wish consoles got recently succsessfull Ui for cooking
you do use manos cooking clothes when you do cook the actual end meals (balenos, Valencia etc).
At tet it even makes more meals per hour then you do with 1sek cooking
this is incorrect. you can check yourself with the market cooking sheet (tick slow cook option)
slow cooking is not recommended unless you have a pen manos cook's clothes with certain recipes and it really fits your playstyle (consider opportunity cost)
exception: red sauce / dressing over night
Hey awesome guide, where can I find that market cooking spreadsheet?

What is this ? A lifeskiller that is not trying to manipulate others into making them RL workers for his "600 quadrillion silver in one week" crap ?
Get outa here!
I have a video about a 600 million silver lifeskill routine (what a coincidence and sorry it’s just million, not quadrillion), but i didn’t share it to manipulate the economy for my personal gain. It’s just a bunch of good stuff for beginners and people interested in self-improvement
just make potato crates instead at velia, send to velenca for desert trade buff lol
WHAT grains are BOTTLENECK RESOURCE?! wtf did i hear like sry but i can 24/7 craft beer and sell on MP and never run out of grains, is eather you not take all low CP grain nodes or you do something way difference with your grains, or you mean OUT of stock at MP cuz that different story
They are a bottleneck resource in the sense that the server runs out if demand is higher than supply from workers. It’s not efficient to gather them yourself.
I don’t know how the situation is on your server, but EU has run out of grains several times and personally, I always cook more than my 450cp worker empire produces.
@@Penemue i'm from EU but never look at market of grains cuz i remember them have millions of them in MP o.O why they are suddenly gone did admins buy them all out or cuz people did not transfer and lot of market is lost

TRI Loggia costs 50M per piece, beginners can buy it after a few hours of playing or probably just from their new player attendance rewards.
Now that TRI Boss gear costs 1 silver and DUO Blackstar Gear is free, there is no reason why beginners wouldn’t buy TRI loggia immediately. If you or your friends are buying your own combat gear first thing, you’re doing it wrong

“Grains are bottleneck materials in BDO” bullshit.
All resources that can only be obtained from nodes because it is impossible or inefficient to gather them yourself are bottleneck resources.
On EU, grains are constantly sold out and very active cooks need more grains than the market supplies

"""honestly""" i think half the guides on youtube and online in general are fucking scams for players. i feel like people are saying things to make the game easier for top players or something.
that's just my for fun tinfoil hat theory.
That’s a pretty bad theory, even as a joke.
There are content creators who don’t want to make high-effort guides and some of those can be wrong or misleading.
Anyone who spends upwards of 20 hours on a short video will probably agree that it’s inefficient to make content to mislead people.
If I want silver, I play the game. It’s 6 gadzillion times easier and faster than making a video that supposedly shifts the market
@@Penemue that's exactly what someone would say who's in on it!
Nice dude. Just cant keep a secret to yourself.
So what isn't clear here. Is you want us to use grains better. You don't exactly offer a better alternative to beer directly. You give examples to better use grain but don't replace the beer. So what is vinegar or essence of liquor for and why do we want to make that? Your entire point of the video is wasted. Which makes it seem like a giant shit post. For you to complain about what's going on in EU right now, lol.
if you want something to feed your workers with, use grilled chicken. if you want CP, use vinegar or EoL. if you want profit, make guru meals. if you want beer for balenos meals, buy it on the market. if it's sold out, you can still make beer.
sounds like several perfect alternatives to me, and it's all in the video.
i'm not complaining about anything in the video. what makes you think i'm complaining?
sorry, but the only shitpost here is your comment.
@@Penemue Back then I recently came back to the game. Rewatching it again after about a month. It makes a lot more sense. The main take-away is that grilled bird meat is better then beer. Which wasn't a clear as it could of been. So I take back my comment about it being a shit post.
