    *****Corrections: It turns out the North American Porcupine is more closely related to guinea pigs more than anything else.
    Nocturnal: sleeping during the day!!
    (The fun with making a video in 1 take is sometimes you have a brain fart!)

    Nocturnal means the sleep in the DAYTIME and they’re active at night.

    I met my first and ONLY porcupine on my first visit out west. I was walking down a quiet back road in the Tetons( residential) and this “fuzzy” cute little animal kind of wabbled out of the woods. It walked towards me and stopped. I talked to it. It was adorable and was shocked to realize omg that is a PORCUPINE!!! I was calm- it was calm looked at me and wandered on back into the forest. Gorgeous super cute but I will give them space if that happens again. If I’m so lucky.

    Most porcupines I have come agree just waddle along pretty slowly. However, I once saw a porcupine running toward a culvert when a dog was barking. I was pretty impressed with the speed and it was a lot more than 3mph!

    Important Correction:
    Nocturnal means that animals are active during the night and sleep during the day.
    Diurnal would mean they are active during the day and sleept nights.
    Please ensure you have the facts right before teaching kids and unaware adults alike something false. Adding a corrective note at the relevant point in the video would also be helpful. As hardly anyone, especially kids, bother reading video descriptions.

    One predator of the porcupine you forgot is the Fisher. They can turn porcupines upside down and kill them on the stomach where there are no quills. Porcupines like to eat rubber. There's a photo of a trailhead in Canada where all the parked cars have chicken wire surrounding the cars so while the occupants are hiking the Porcupines can't eat the tires.

  • @Lardzor

    Porcupines don't shoot their quills, but they do lunge backwards at you if you get to close. Do you really think a dog would bury it's face inches deep into a wall of quills? No, the dog got it's face close to sniff, and then the porcupine lunged backwards into the dog's face.
    A porcupine was walking down the middle of a dirt road near my house, so I had to ride my ATC around it. When I got about two or three feet away from it, it lunged backwards at my ATC, so I have some personal experience.
    Also, thanks to your video, I would also never know that porcupines are actually rodents.

    • @OutdoorAnthony
      @OutdoorAnthony  Год назад +1

      Hang out with him! Just kidding. I would find plants that are native to the area that porcupines like eating, then lead him outside with them, literally like a trail of breadcrumbs, if you don't want him coming back, yell and stomp to freak him out, and he wont bother you. There could be several reasons why they are coming into your home. If it's a baby, please call a wildlife rescue. If it's an adult, he may just have been attracted to salts humans and our food give off. They don't run fast and pose no mortal threat. No need to call pest control or government officials if it's only happening once or extremely rarely.

    What would you recommend as a couple the best foods to tempt a porcupine into a Have-A-Heart trap? I have a problem porcupine on my property that has already given my dog a face full of quills. If you have to get a vet involved removal of quills can be $500,--1000. I would like to relocate the culprit. Thanks for any suggestions.
