Why- (original song based on Alice Hewitt’s poem “why”)
I came across a book of original poems written by one of my late relatives, Alice Hewitt, and I thought it would be cool to make one into a song. One that stuck out to me was “why,” where she talks about her feelings upon learning that her son would be disabled. The poem was written probably during the 1950s and does use an outdated term. I took some of her original words, added my own, and set it to a melody. I hope it can be used as a way to advocate for those in need of it. 💖

lyrics to mine and Alice’s original song:
A young mothers heart was broken
As those terrible words were spoken
They said that he wouldn’t get very far
So many questions but no place to start
Sobbing and sighing heartbreak consumed the night
Asking the age old question why?
But today dear mother
Something can be done
Help is near for you and your little one
So rest your eyes and think of the light
That this blooming flower will bring to your life
And then soon you will find
Through trials and pleasant surprise
That there is no more need for you to sigh
And ask the question why
They say what’s broken can’t be fixed
But what if they’re the ones who are amiss
What’s wrong with marching to your own drum
There’s room in this world for everyone
Just please try to let go
Of the words they callously boast
(Repeat chorus)
Why can’t they sympathize
Why don’t they see the beautiful bright light
Radiating from a special soul
One of a kind
Cuz today dear mother
Things are being done
Help is here for those like your little one
So rest easy from up above
Knowing that they’re surrounded with love
And hopefully those doubting soon will find
Through trials and pleasant surprise
That there is never a need for one to sign
And ask the question why - Видеоклипы
